Pierre Cotton is one of the most admired rising stars of the natural Beaujolais revival, part of the same generation and movement as Jules Métras and Yann Bertrand. The son of a winegrower and fifth generation on the family estate in Odenas, established on the southern slope of the Brouilly hill since 1856, Pierre first wanted to be a motorcycle mechanic before deciding to become a winemaker around the age of 20. Eager to discover wines beyond the Beaujolais he already knew by heart, he went to train in the Loire Valley near Rablay-sur-Layon alongside the local natural winemakers. He returned in 2014 to work with his father Guy, converted the estate to organic farming, and produced his first vintage under his own name: "100% Cotton", his first Côte de Brouilly cuvée, with a play on his surname. Since 2018, Marine Bonnet, a specialist in natural sciences and biodiversity, has joined him and co-signs the wines under the name Domaine Bonnet-Cotton. Across 13 hectares of organic vines in the Brouilly, Côte de Brouilly, Régnié, Fleurie and Beaujolais appellations, with gobelet-trained vines averaging 65 years of age, the two winemakers produce wines with no added sulphur, using cold carbonic maceration and ageing in large oak barrels. "Fresh and incredibly flavourful plonk", as Pierre himself puts it, combining complexity, density, generosity and outstanding drinkability.
The history of the estate begins in 1856 with Joseph Sanvers, whose descendants have followed one another on the same vines on the southern slope of the Brouilly hill: Philibert Sanvers, Jean and Marinette Sanvers, then Evelyne and Guy Cotton. Pierre Cotton is therefore the fifth generation. But his path is an atypical one: the son of a winegrower, he first considered a career as a motorbike mechanic before changing his mind and turning to oenology. He decided not to stay in Beaujolais to learn his craft, but instead to leave for the Loire Valley, to Rablay-sur-Layon, in the orbit of the natural winemakers of Anjou who were revolutionising wine at that time. He completed several formative internships there that shaped his vision of wine.
Back in Beaujolais in 2014, Pierre joined his father Guy, converted the family vineyard to organic farming, and produced his first vintage under his own name. His first cuvée is called "100% Cotton", a nod to his surname and his pride in being an independent winegrower. The following year, he acquired two hectares in Brouilly, then a plot in Régnié. In 2018, Marine Bonnet joined the estate, bringing her expertise in natural sciences, biodiversity and the management of phytosanitary treatments. Together, they developed an ambitious agroecological project: grassing, hedgerows, intra-plot trees (agroforestry), cover crops, gentle pruning. The estate is now Domaine Bonnet-Cotton, with 13 hectares across 5 appellations.
The heart of the estate is the southern slope of the Brouilly hill in Odenas, on granitic and basaltic soils characteristic of the Côte de Brouilly. The vineyard extends over 13 hectares spread across five appellations: Côte de Brouilly (5 hectares, basaltic terroir of Mont Brouilly), Brouilly (2–3 hectares, deeper granitic soils on the plain), Régnié (1 hectare, fine and light granite), Fleurie (a plot on the pink granite of the most floral cru in Beaujolais), and Beaujolais (entry-level plots). The Fleurie plot is in the Poncié sector, one of the most reputed in the cru, on well-exposed slopes giving minerality and silky structure.
The vines are trained en gobelet at 10,000 plants per hectare, with an average age of 65 years. The dominant grape variety is Gamay, with a small proportion of Chardonnay. Certified organic farming. Pierre and Marine have implemented an agroforestry project: planting of intra-plot trees, hedgerows between plots, cover crops to enrich the soils and promote biodiversity. The cuvées produced from grapes purchased from environmentally conscious partner winegrowers mention the producer's name on the back label, in a spirit of total transparency.
Pierre Cotton vinifies according to the principles he learned in the Loire Valley from the natural winemakers: carbonic maceration in cement tanks, at low temperature for 10 days, using indigenous yeasts. No oenological additives. No filtration or fining. Sulphite additions are homeopathic, or even zero on most cuvées. Ageing takes place in large oak casks for a minimum of 8 to 12 months. For certain more ambitious cuvées, a proportion of multi-vintage barrels (maximum 15%) may complement the ageing in large casks. Harvests are manual, in small crates to preserve the integrity of the grapes. Pierre is a proponent of long macerations, which explains the characteristic power and sapidity of his wines. He himself says he seeks "complexity, substance, density and generosity while making light wines with great drinkability": a successful paradox that each cuvée illustrates.
100% Cotton (Côte de Brouilly): The iconic, founding cuvée of the estate, first vintage 2014, whose name is a play on words using the winegrower's surname. Rigorous single-plot selection from the basalt vines of Mont Brouilly. Carbonic maceration at low temperature, ageing for 11 months in large oak casks of which 15% in multi-vintage barrels. Pierre officially becoming the fifth winegrower of the family at the time this cuvée was released for sale. A vibrant red wine combining depth, freshness and spiced expression: aromas of small black fruits, gentle spices and flowers (peony, violet), generous and full-bodied, a gracious and long finish. A style evoking certain Burgundies. Ageing potential of 5 to 10 years.
Côte de Brouilly La Chapelle: Single-vineyard red cuvée from vines situated around the Chapelle Notre-Dame du Raisin, an emblematic monument perched at the summit of Mont Brouilly, visible for kilometres around. Basaltic soil of Mont Brouilly. A red wine of great elegance, with a distinctive basaltic minerality. Spiced, floral and black fruit aromas, coffee and discreet oak. Beautiful concentration, perfect balance and remarkable length. "A juicy and indulgent wine."
Brouilly: Red Brouilly cuvée from the 2–3 hectares acquired progressively since 2015 on the granitic soils of the plain. A lighter and fruitier red wine than the Côte de Brouilly, expressing the supple and crunchy character of Gamay on granite. Black cherry, the signature fruit of the Brouilly cru, dominates the nose. Fresh and easy-drinking palate. To be enjoyed within 3 to 5 years.
Régnié: Red Régnié cuvée from the plot acquired in this tenth cru of Beaujolais, on fine and light granite. A red wine of great lightness and highly expressive aromatic freshness: raspberry, wild strawberry, flowers. The lightest cuvée of the estate, to be enjoyed slightly chilled among friends. Typical of the delicate expression of Régnié.
Fleurie Poncié: Red Fleurie cuvée from the Poncié plot, one of the most reputed sectors of the cru, on well-exposed slopes of pink granite. An elegant and fruity red wine with beautiful minerality and a silky structure characteristic of this terroir. Floral nose (rose, violet) and fruity (cherry, raspberry). A palate of remarkable freshness and finesse for a Fleurie. The most flattering and most immediately accessible cuvée of the estate.
Beaujolais: Entry-level cuvée in the generic Beaujolais appellation, added to the range in 2022. A light and fruity red wine with aromas of fresh small red fruits, a supple and thirst-quenching palate. The easy-drinking, introductory cuvée to the Pierre Cotton universe, to be enjoyed cool and without ceremony.
