Les Creisses

The Les Creisses cuvée blends two terroirs: 11 hectares on a stony clay-limestone plateau with deep soil, and 20 hectares of plots on poorer gravel terraces (Villafranchian gravel), bordered by woodland and planted with old Grenache and Cinsault vines. Combining these terroirs with Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Carignan yields silkiness, density and freshness from the limestone soils, alongside the finesse contributed by the old Grenache and Cinsault vines. Domaine les Creisse also produces a second Vin de Pays cuvée called Les Brunes. The Mourvèdre that makes up 20% of this cuvée comes from a southeast-facing hillside on an ancient lava flow. The dark basalt soil here gave Les Brunes its name. Les Brunes, from the Coteaux du Languedoc appellation, is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), with Syrah making up the remaining 20%. Philippe Chesnelong receives technical advice from his cousin in Bordeaux, Louis Mitjaville, whose experience is unmistakable in the winemaking and aging of the wines. Les Brunes is a powerful red Languedoc wine, aged for 16 to 18 months in barrels, one-third of them new, and requiring a few years in the cellar. Les Brunes shows lovely depth and a very dark, intense color, while developing aromas of blackcurrant, red fruit and spice. Its tannic structure is firm, yet the finish of this red wine remains lively, with cocoa and a hint of minty freshness. The Cabernet Sauvignon and the Pays d’Oc sunshine give it something of the style, structure and richness of a fine wine from Bordeaux… It will keep for 5 to 8 years, and decanting before serving is recommended to enjoy it at its best.
