Peyre Rose

Wines from Domaine Peyre Rose: buy at the best price

This benchmark estate in the Languedoc was founded in the early 1980s. Coming from a family of winemakers but with no intention of following that path, Marlène Soria, nicknamed the "diva of Syrah," decided, initially, to plant a few vines in order to produce wine for her own consumption and that of her loved ones. Ideally located on the heights of Saint-Pargoire, between Béziers and Montpellier, the estate is shielded from urban development by a natural barrier of garrigue. The first vintage produced in 1988 was promising, and Marlène Soria received acclaim from the renowned Robert Parker guide.

History of Domaine Peyre Rose

The history of Domaine Peyre Rose is that of a visionary woman, Marlène Soria, who, after a brilliant career in real estate, succumbed to the wild charm of the heights of Saint-Pargoire in 1973. Purchasing an isolated country house, she cleared the garrigue in the 1980s to plant her first vines, with no ambition other than to produce a personal wine for her loved ones. Coming from a family of winemakers, Marlène worked alone, drilling 170 meters for water and installing a generator in the absence of electricity. The first harvest dates from 1988, in a Languedoc then poorly regarded. But fate shifted in 1993: her wines captivated Peter Vezan, an American agent, then critic Robert Parker, who propelled them onto the international stage. In 1994, La Revue du Vin de France crowned Marlène "Person of the Year", sealing the legend. Despite trials such as the vat pollution in 1999-2001, which forced her to sacrifice three vintages, the estate expanded and equipped itself with energy autonomy (solar panels and wells). Today, joined by her son in 2012, Peyre Rose remains an organic bastion, awarded 3 stars by RVF and 4*/5 by Bettane & Desseauve, inspiring a generation of winemakers.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Peyre Rose

Lost at the end of a winding path bordered by rockrose and holm oaks, the terroir of Domaine Peyre Rose extends over 25 hectares in Coteaux du Languedoc, at 220 meters altitude, under a Mediterranean climate with sunny summers and invigorating sea breezes. The clay-limestone soils, rich in rounded pebbles and friable rocks, alternate between hard stony zones at altitude and more clayey parcels on the lower slopes, favoring very low yields for ultra-concentrated grapes. Planted between 1981 and 1984, then expanded in the 1990s, the vineyards comprise 23 hectares of reds (70% Syrah, complemented by Grenache Noir, Mourvèdre and Carignan) and 2 hectares of whites (50% Rolle, 40% Roussanne, with Viognier, Ugni Blanc, Terret and Clairette). Certified organic from the outset, the estate scrupulously respects the surrounding nature, surrounded by preserved garrigue to avoid any contamination. These "plantier" vines averaging 30 years express a pure terroir, where Syrah, inspired by Côte-Rôtie, dominates with ardent vitality.

Winemaking at Domaine Peyre Rose

Winemaking at Domaine Peyre Rose is a patient art, guided by Marlène Soria's sensory intuition. The grapes, hand-sorted, ferment through long maceration in concrete vats painted candy pink, a nod to Yves Saint Laurent and the estate's femininity. Without excessive wood in the early vintages, the wines now partially age in large casks for discreet maturation, preserving the terroir's freshness. The secret lies in the interminable aging: up to 10 years in vat for the whites, 2 years in vat followed by bottle rest for the reds, before release. This approach, combined with bottle aging at the estate, polishes the tannins, refines the tertiary aromas (clove, truffle, smoked bacon) and ensures a rare balance between power and acidity. Result: mature wines upon release, ready to evolve for 20-25 years, born from an organic philosophy where nature dictates the rhythm.

The Cuvées of Domaine Peyre Rose

Domaine Peyre Rose offers four emblematic cuvées, limited to 35,000 bottles annually, all under the Coteaux du Languedoc appellation and certified organic. Each reveals the diversity of the terroir, with ever-present Syrah for the reds.

Oro: The rare and flagship white, a blend of Rolle (majority), Roussanne, Viognier and local varieties such as Ugni Blanc and Terret. Aged nearly 10 years in vat then in bottle, it offers a floral nose with dried fruits, a rich, persistent and slightly oxidative palate, with aromatic finesse that captivates bold palates. Perfect paired with seafood or aged cheeses.

Syrah Léone: A seductive cuvée of 90% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre, from friable and irrigated soils, more accessible in youth. Powerful and velvety, it reveals a peppery nose of smoked black fruits, a full-bodied and precise palate, with a long and smooth finish. Aged extensively, it impresses with its volume and aging potential of 20 years, evoking great Rhône wines with notes of clove and exotic spices.

Clos des Cistes: The most complex, blending Syrah and Grenache on high, stony parcels, for vibrant acidity and taut freshness. Nose of blackcurrant, spices and garrigue, balanced and elegant palate, which opens to grandiose depth after 5-6 years of cellaring. Less exuberant when young, it excels at maturity with finesse and precision, ideal for lovers of structured and mineral wines.

Marlène N°3: The most precocious gourmet cuvée, 65% Syrah and 35% Grenache, on young and well-planted terroir. Spicy nose of red fruits, velvety palate with accents of truffle and coffee, with an assertive structure that evolves superbly. Accessible and fleshy, it shines through its indulgence and balance, gaining complexity over time.

With its rare and profound cuvées, Marlène Soria elevates Languedoc to the rank of the world's great wines.
