This leading Languedoc estate was founded in the early 1980s. Although she came from a family of winemakers, Marlène Soria had no intention of following in their footsteps. Nicknamed the “diva of Syrah,” she initially decided to plant a few vines to make wine for herself and those close to her. Ideally situated above Saint-Pargoire, between Béziers and Montpellier, the property is shielded from urban development by a natural barrier of garrigue. Its first vintage, produced in 1988, showed promise and drew reviews from the renowned Robert Parker wine guide.

The History of Domaine Peyre Rose

The story of Domaine Peyre Rose is that of a visionary woman, Marlène Soria, who, after a successful career in real estate, fell for the wild beauty of the hills above Saint-Pargoire in 1973. She bought an isolated country house and began clearing the garrigue in the 1980s to plant her first vines, with no ambition beyond making a wine of her own for family and friends. Born into a family of winegrowers, Marlène worked alone, drilling 170 meters down for water and installing a generator because there was no electricity. Her first harvest came in 1988, when Languedoc was still poorly regarded. But everything changed in 1993: her wines impressed American agent Peter Vezan and then critic Robert Parker, who brought them to international attention. In 1994, La Revue du Vin de France named Marlène "Person of the Year", cementing her legend. Despite setbacks, including contamination of the tanks in 1999–2001 that forced her to sacrifice three vintages, the estate expanded and developed its own energy supply with solar panels and boreholes. Today, with her son having joined her in 2012, Peyre Rose remains an organic stronghold, awarded 3 stars by RVF and 4*/5 by Bettane & Desseauve, and an inspiration to a generation of winegrowers.

The Terroir and Vines of Domaine Peyre Rose

At the end of a winding path lined with rockroses and holm oaks, the vineyards of Domaine Peyre Rose span 25 hectares in Coteaux du Languedoc, at an elevation of 220 meters, in a Mediterranean climate with sunny summers and invigorating sea winds. The clay-limestone soils, rich in rounded pebbles and friable rock, range from hard, stony ground at higher elevations to clay-rich plots lower on the slopes, encouraging very low yields and highly concentrated grapes. Planted between 1981 and 1984, then expanded in the 1990s, the vineyards include 23 hectares of red varieties (70% Syrah, along with Grenache Noir, Mourvèdre, and Carignan) and 2 hectares of white varieties (50% Rolle, 40% Roussanne, plus Viognier, Ugni Blanc, Terret, and Clairette). Certified organic from the outset, the estate takes great care to protect its natural surroundings and is bordered by preserved garrigue to prevent contamination. These vines, planted in young vineyards and averaging 30 years of age, express an unadulterated terroir in which Syrah, inspired by Côte-Rôtie, dominates with ardent vitality.

Winemaking at Domaine Peyre Rose

Winemaking at Domaine Peyre Rose is a patient art guided by Marlène Soria’s sensory intuition. The hand-sorted grapes undergo long maceration and fermentation in concrete tanks painted candy pink, a nod to Yves Saint Laurent and the estate’s femininity. The early vintages saw little oak; today, some of the wine is aged in large oak casks for a subtle influence that preserves the terroir’s freshness. The secret lies in the exceptionally long aging: up to 10 years in tanks for the whites, and two years in tanks followed by time in bottles for the reds, before release. This approach, combined with bottle aging at the estate, softens the tannins, refines the tertiary aromas (clove, truffle, smoked bacon), and ensures a rare balance of power and acidity. The result is wines that are mature on release and ready to evolve for another 20–25 years, born of an organic philosophy that lets nature set the pace.

The Cuvées of Domaine Peyre Rose

Domaine Peyre Rose offers four signature cuvées, with annual production limited to 35,000 bottles. All bear the Coteaux du Languedoc appellation and are certified organic. Each reveals a different facet of the terroir, with Syrah featuring in every red.

Oro: The rare flagship white, a blend of mostly Rolle with Roussanne, Viognier, and local varieties such as Ugni Blanc and Terret. Aged for nearly 10 years in tanks and then in bottles, it offers a floral nose with dried fruit notes, a rich, persistent, slightly oxidative palate, and an aromatic finesse that appeals to adventurous palates. Perfect with seafood or aged cheeses.

Syrah Léone: An enticing cuvée of 90% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre from friable, irrigated soils, making it more approachable in its youth. Powerful and velvety, it reveals a peppery nose of smoky black fruit and a full-bodied, precise palate with a long, smooth finish. Aged for an extended period, it impresses with its breadth and 20-year aging potential, recalling great Rhône wines with notes of clove and exotic spice.

Clos des Cistes: The most complex cuvée, blending Syrah and Grenache from high, stony plots for vibrant acidity and taut freshness. A nose of blackcurrant, spice, and garrigue leads to a balanced, elegant palate that develops remarkable depth after 5–6 years of aging. Less exuberant in its youth, it excels at maturity with finesse and precision—ideal for lovers of structured, mineral-driven wines.

Marlène N°3: The most approachable, fruit-forward cuvée, made from 65% Syrah and 35% Grenache, from young, well-planted vineyard sites. A spicy red-fruit nose leads to a velvety palate with hints of truffle and coffee and a firm structure that evolves beautifully. Approachable and full-bodied, it stands out for its generous fruit and balance, gaining complexity over time.
