Located in Wettolsheim, a stone's throw from Colmar and at the heart of the Alsace Wine Route, Domaine Albert Mann is one of the absolute references of the Alsatian vineyard. Born from the union of two winegrowing families, the Manns and the Barthelmés, it is today run by brothers Maurice and Jacky Barthelmé, supported by their wives and the new generation. Across 23 to 25 hectares divided into around a hundred small plots tended like gardens, the estate practices biodynamic viticulture across seven Grands Crus, two lieux-dits and one Clos en monopole. Named best winemaker in France in 2012 by the Revue du Vin de France, it produces Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Noir of rare finesse.
The history of Domaine Albert Mann is above all a family story, born of the union of two lineages of Alsatian winemakers: the Manns, present in the vineyards since the early 17th century, and the Barthelmés, winemakers since 1654. From this meeting was born one of the most respected estates in Alsace, established in Wettolsheim, in the Haut-Rhin.
Today, the estate is managed by the two Barthelmé brothers: Maurice, in charge of the vines, and Jacky, who oversees the cellar, supported by Marie-Claire and Marie-Thérèse, and later joined by their children Pauline and Antoine to carry on the know-how. Pioneers, they introduced biodynamics as early as 1997 on three Grands Crus, obtained Ecocert organic certification in 2000, then extended biodynamics to the entire estate, now certified Biodyvin. The Barthelmés' quest can be summed up in one word: finesse — that elusive quality which the terroir, as Jacky says, ultimately bestows. An exacting standard crowned in 2012 by the title of best winemaker in France.
The vineyard of Domaine Albert Mann extends over approximately 23 to 25 hectares, scattered across some one hundred small plots of great geological diversity. The estate holds parcels across seven Grands Crus, including the Schlossberg with its granitic soils, the Furstentum and the Hengst on marly limestone, the Steingrubler and the Pfersigberg. These are complemented by two prestigious lieu-dits, the Altenbourg in Kientzheim and the Rosenberg in Wettolsheim, as well as a monopole Clos, the Clos de la Faille in Wintzenheim.
The grape varieties reflect the richness of Alsace: Riesling (approximately 31%), Pinot Blanc and Auxerrois (19%), Pinot Gris (18%), Gewurztraminer (17%), Pinot Noir (12%) and Muscat (3%). To make the most of this heritage, the winemakers replant using massal selections and seek a great diversity of vines. Each plot is tended like a small garden, in harmony with living matter, soils and biodiversity, in order to reveal the purest expression of each terroir.
In the cellar, the work aims for precision, freshness and digestibility, staying as close as possible to the grape and the soil from which it comes. The whites are vinified grape variety by grape variety and plot by plot, in pursuit of a faithful expression of terroir, elegance and a fine ageing potential. The great diversity of soils makes it possible to produce dry wines as well as Crémants, Vendanges Tardives and Sélections de Grains Nobles.
Pinot Noir, which has become a true signature of the estate, is handled with particular care. Sorting takes place in the vineyard rather than the cellar, so that only grapes of impeccable quality are brought in, and winemaking favours infusion over maceration, with a measured addition of whole clusters. The Barthelmés' goal is to achieve phenolic ripeness without excess alcohol, resulting in reds of great energy, precise, textured and thoroughbred.
The Crémant d'Alsace: the Crémant d'Alsace Extra Brut, a blend of Auxerrois, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir, is a fresh and delicate sparkling wine that expresses the personality of Alsatian grape varieties.
The traditional wines: crafted by grape variety, they include the Muscat (classically served with asparagus), the Pinot Blanc Auxerrois with aromas of peach and pear, the Pinot Gris and the Gewurztraminer, powerful and complex with exotic notes. Fruity, pure and approachable wines, faithful to the spirit of the estate.
The terroir wines and lieu-dits: the Cuvée Albert range, with the vibrant and mineral Riesling Cuvée Albert and the aromatic and persistent Pinot Gris Cuvée Albert, as well as the Riesling Rosenberg, sourced from this lieu-dit in Wettolsheim, express the full richness of their soils.
The Grands Crus: the jewels of the estate, including the Riesling Grand Cru Schlossberg (granite) and the Riesling Grand Cru Furstentum, the Pinot Gris Grand Cru Hengst and the Pinot Gris Grand Cru Furstentum, as well as the Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Steingrubler and the Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Furstentum. Age-worthy wines of great distinction, deep and elegant, each revealing the singularity of their marly-limestone or granitic terroir.
The Pinot Noirs: an interpretation of the estate's red terroirs and among the greatest Pinot Noirs from Alsace. The range brings together Les Saintes Claires, elegant and floral with strawberry notes, the Clos de la Faille, a vibrant, thoroughbred and mineral monopole, the Grand H (from the Hengst), with its sharp flavours and supple texture, and the Grand P (from the Pfersigberg), taut in its youth but endowed with a fine tannic sap that gains in complexity with age.
The late harvest and sweet wines: an expression of Alsatian sweetness, the estate produces the Riesling l'Amplitude, the Riesling Altenbourg Vendanges Tardives, the Gewurztraminer Altenbourg and Grand Cru Furstentum Vendanges Tardives, as well as rare Sélections de Grains Nobles such as the Pinot Gris Altenbourg Le Tri, the Pinot Gris Furstentum Le Tri, the Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Furstentum and the Riesling Schlossberg L'Épicentre. Concentrated nectars of sublime balance, they crown the diversity of the estate's great terroirs.
