Château Pradeaux in Bandol: great wines from Provence
Located in the Var department in St Cyr sur Mer, Château Pradeaux represents part of the heritage that Jean-Marie-Etienne Portalis inherited in 1752, before seeing his estate devastated by the Revolution of 1789, and then becoming a Minister under Napoleon Ier.
Very busy at the time, he delegated its maintenance to tenant farmers. Château Pradeaux is among the most renowned properties in Bandol, and comprises a superb vineyard of 21 hectares in production out of the 26 hectares that make up the Pradeaux estate. After the vineyard was restored following the Phylloxera invasion at the end of the 19th century, Countess Arlette Portalis and her mother came to settle at Château Pradeaux at the beginning of the war in 1939, while the vineyard operation was managed by an estate manager and tenant farmers. Arlette Portalis wished for the Bandol appellation to finally be recognized, and in 1941, with the help of Pierre Le Roy de Boiseaumarié, co-founder of INAO, she contributed to the creation of the AOC. The Countess launched the production of a Provence red wine consisting of 80% Mourvèdre, 15% Grenache Noir and 5% Cinsault, on this exceptional clay-limestone terroir composed of red earth and outcropping rocks. Since 1983, Cyrille, her nephew, along with his wife Magali, have taken over, assisted since 2011 by their son Etienne. A perceptible change in the wines can be noted from then on, towards more finesse and tension, yielding nothing to the generation of modern, colored Bandols with advantageous oak, sometimes more accessible in their youth. The great red wine cuvée of Château Pradeaux is the archetype of traditional Bandol, classic and finding its fulfillment as the years of aging progress, thanks to whole-cluster vinification (relatively atypical in Bandol) and very long aging that can reach up to 48 months in old foudres, so that it refines (Bandol appellation standards only require 18 months of aging in foudres). This is how the red Bandol from Château Pradeaux acquires its particularly powerful and structured profile. The aging capacity of Pradeaux's red Bandol is exceptional (15 to 30 years in the best vintages). The Bandol rosé from Château Pradeaux exhales pronounced notes of grapefruit, and may surprise with its flesh that is both dense and vinous. This rosé remains an excellent table companion on beautiful days, with flavorful Provençal cuisine. The acquisition of bottles of red Bandol from Château Pradeaux is therefore reserved for patient enthusiasts or requires choosing a vintage of at least 12 to 15 years of age, such as great years like 1998 / 2001 / 2004 / 2007.
