The wines of the Eric Morgat estate, beautiful white wines from the Loire
The MORGAT estate is located in Savennières, and was founded by Eric Morgat in 1995 when he was only 25 years old. A tireless worker from a long family lineage established in Anjou for 2 centuries...
Eric Morgat was able to plant and build his own 6-hectare Chenin vineyard, selecting what he considered to be the finest terroirs on the volcanic and schist slopes overlooking the Loire, while clearing and replanting Savennières plots that had been abandoned. After various minor adjustments since 2004, the wines produced are dry (harvested without botrytis), and vinified for approximately 20 months in barrels and then in tanks. The wines possess an uncommon energy and intensity. Domaine Morgat produces 3 different cuvées in AOC Savennières: the "LITUS" cuvée comes from a one-hectare plot located at the top of a volcanic hillside overlooking the Layon. The southerly exposure of the plot and the very stony, warm spilite soil, composed of volcanic rock, encourage high ripeness in the Chenin and a magnificent, frank saline expression in the wine. The nose presents aromas of white peach, apple and mirabelle plum, along with passion fruit, complemented by floral notes such as acacia and verbena. On the palate, the wine is rich yet dominated by the freshness of citrus fruits (lime, kumquat) and fine mentholated flavours, leading to a taut and saline finish, marked by precision of aromas. This is truly a gastronomic wine, endowed with real ageing potential of around 8 to 10 years. The "FIDES" cuvée from Morgat is a great, dense and complex fine wine, with ripe and juicy fruit, featuring notes of pear, stewed apple and apricot accompanied by a hint of almond and floral flavours of mimosa, grass and fresh mint. The wine is highly mineral, and one literally has the impression of tasting stone powder — very saline, energetic and mouth-watering on the palate. The finish is marked by delicate, finely peppered bitterness reminiscent of pomelo and orange zest. The wine was aged 12 months in barrels and 9 months in tanks, in order to give it richness and depth. It will fully blossom after 7 to 8 years of cellaring. Finally, the Morgat "Clos Sertaux" cuvée can prove to be very rare, as in 2016, when this one-hectare plot was able to produce (due to frost) only 1,000 precious bottles of a wine of extraordinary intensity. It is an exceptional cuvée, marked by great mineral, fruity, floral and spicy complexity. The wine presents itself as a true whirlwind of aromas of pear, pineapple, quince, citrus, muscat, bergamot, menthol, black tea and dried nuts. On the palate, the wine is pure and mineral, very saline and precisely chiselled, worthy of a true Grand Cru. Three great Loire wines produced by Domaine Morgat, to be recommended to enthusiasts in search of powerful sensations and mineral purity.
