Eric Morgat

The wines of Domaine Eric Morgat, from Savennieres in the Loire Valley

The wines of Domaine Eric Morgat

The Domaine Morgat situated in Savennières, was founded by Eric Morgat in 1995 when he was just 25. A tireless worker born of an Anjou family, Eric Morgat planted his own 6 hectares vineyard with Chenin Blanc after having selected what he considered to be the finest terroir on the volcanic and schist slopes that overlook the Loire and having cleared and replanted abandoned plots of Savennières.

After some initial fine-tuning, from 2004 onwards the wines are dry (harvested botrytis-free) and vinified 20 months in barrel then in tank. The result are wines are of a rare energy and intensity. The Domaine Eric Morgat produces 3 white Loire wines in the AOC Savennières. "Litus" comes from a 1hectare plot found on top of the volcanic hillside that overlooks Layon. The plot faces south and is comprised of rocky and warm spilite and volcanic rock which favour full maturity and magnificent and transparent saltiness in the wines. The nose is dominated by white peaches, apples, mirabelle plum as well as passionfruit, flowers, acacia and verbena. The texture is rich and dominated by fresh citrus (limes and kumquat) and menthol and finishes tight, salty and clean. It is a gastronomic wine that can certainly be kept at least 10 years. "Fides" is a Grand vin, dense and complex of juicy ripe fruit with notes of pears, applesauce, apricot, a touch of almonds, flowers (mimosa), fresh herbs and mint. It's truly a mineral wine that gives the impression of tasting rock powder, but also quite salty, energetic and salivating. The finish is marked by a beautiful bitterness, pepper and zests of grapefruit and orange. The wine spends 12 months in barrels and 9 in tank in order give it body. A wine to keep for at least 7 to 8 years before broaching. Finally is the "Clos Sertaux", which can be a rarity, such as in 2016 where this 1 hectare plot produced only 1000 precious bottles (due to frosts) of extraordinary intensity. It's an exceptional wine of complexity: mineral, fruity, floral and spicy, a whirlwind of pears, pineapple, quince, citrus, muscade, bergamot, menthol, black tea and dried nuts. In the mouth it is mineral and pure, salty and chiseled, truly a Grand cru. All the 3 great wines of the Loire Valley produced by the Domaine Morgat are wholly recommendable to connoisseurs in search of exciting wine of mineral purity.
