Nestled in the Esclans valley, near La Motte and northeast of Saint-Tropez, Château d'Esclans is one of the most iconic estates in Provence and the birthplace of the famous Whispering Angel. Taken over in 2006 by Sacha Lichine, son of the legendary Alexis Lichine, this historic estate elevated rosé to the rank of a great gastronomic wine and sparked the "Rosé Renaissance" around the world. On clay-limestone hills bathed in Mediterranean sunshine, Grenache, Rolle (Vermentino) and Cinsault yield rosés of rare elegance and precision, from the festive cuvée to the finest age-worthy rosé.

History of Château d'Esclans

The history of Château d'Esclans dates back more than eight centuries. Once the residence of the Counts of Provence, the site already served as a lookout post during the Gaulish era to monitor the Gulf of Fréjus. The current building, inspired by Tuscan villas, was rebuilt in the mid-nineteenth century, at the heart of a vast property of more than 260 hectares overlooking the village of La Motte, in the Var.

In 2006, Sacha Lichine acquired the estate with an ambitious vision: to create the greatest rosés in the world. To achieve this, he surrounded himself with the talent of Patrick Léon, former cellar master at Mouton Rothschild, and introduced unprecedented winemaking techniques to Provence. The launch of Whispering Angel, which became the best-selling French rosé in the United States, followed by the Garrus cuvée, presented as the world's most expensive rosé, propelled the estate onto the international stage. In 2019, Moët Hennessy (LVMH group) acquired a majority stake, reinforcing Château d'Esclans's status among Provence's finest properties.

Terroirs and Vines of Château d'Esclans

The Château d'Esclans vineyard extends across the clay-limestone hills of the Var hinterland, enjoying an ideal Mediterranean climate for growing Provençal grape varieties. The plots are arranged at varying altitudes, and the higher they climb, the older the vines: on the highest terrains, some Grenache vines are nearly ninety years old. These old vines produce grapes of exceptional aromatic concentration, forming the foundation of the estate's most prestigious cuvées.

The grape varieties are predominantly Grenache and Rolle (Vermentino), complemented by Cinsault, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Tibouren. Grape selection is rigorous, plot by plot, in order to reveal the freshness and complexity specific to each terroir. This mosaic of soils and exposures, combined with heritage vines, allows for the crafting of a range of rosés of great depth, spanning from the most vibrant expression to the most sophisticated richness.

Winemaking at Château d'Esclans

The signature of Château d'Esclans lies in an approach to rosé conceived in the same manner as a fine white wine. Harvesting is carried out with care, often in the morning to preserve the freshness of the grapes, followed by meticulous selection. The entry-level cuvées are vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with ageing on fine lees to add texture, while the superior cuvées call upon fermentation and ageing in oak barrels.

This controlled use of oak, reserved for grapes from old vines, gives the top cuvées a smooth texture, remarkable length, and genuine ageing potential — countering the image of rosé as light and fleeting. The combination of stainless steel and barrel vinification achieves that unique balance between freshness, complexity, and depth that has made the estate famous.

The Cuvées of Château d'Esclans

Whispering Angel: the estate's iconic and internationally celebrated cuvée, under the AOP Côtes de Provence. A blend of Grenache, Cinsault, and Rolle, it captivates with its pale colour, freshness, and aromatic precision. An elegant and approachable rosé, it has become a true global icon of Provence rosé.

Rock Angel: a step above Whispering Angel, this rosé benefits from partial barrel vinification, which lends it greater structure, minerality, and depth. More gastronomic in character, it pairs ideally with bold cuisine while retaining the house's signature saline freshness.

Château d'Esclans: the eponymous cuvée, a blend of Grenache and Rolle from selected plots, crafted through a combination of stainless steel and barrel fermentation. It offers a smooth and creamy texture, a long and rich palate, and great persistence, combining freshness and complexity.

Les Clans: a prestigious rosé aged in barrel, sourced from old vines, whose richness and sophistication evoke those of a great fine wine white from Burgundy. Ample and profound, it is a gastronomic and age-worthy wine that improves after one or two years.

Garrus: the pinnacle of the range and one of the most sought-after rosés in the world. Sourced from the oldest Grenache plots, fermented and aged in oak barrels, it achieves an exceptional level of richness, texture, and length. Regularly acclaimed by critics, this great age-worthy rosé has redefined what is possible for the colour.

The Palm by Whispering Angel: a more accessible and summery expression, under the Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence appellation, with Grenache as the dominant variety. Lively, fresh, and fruity, it is a joyful entry point into the estate's world, crafted with sunny days in mind.

The Beach by Whispering Angel: an evolution of The Palm, this light and luminous rosé from the Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence is vinified in stainless steel tanks on lees to gain texture. Committed to a responsible approach, with lightweight and sustainable packaging, it embodies the spirit of summer and represents an ideal first step into the world of the Château d'Esclans family.
