History of Domaine Morey-Coffinet

The history of Domaine Morey-Coffinet begins in the late 1970s, when Michel Morey, son of the celebrated winemaker Marc Morey, joined his destiny with Fabienne Coffinet, descended from the Fernand Coffinet lineage — two families with deep roots in Chassagne-Montrachet. From this union was born, between 1978 and 1980, a vineyard founded on the combined heritage of two exceptional viticultural estates. Endowed with a solid base of premier crus, Michel and Fabienne gradually built the reputation of the estate by focusing on the quality of their terroirs and the rigour of their work in the cellar.

Around the turn of the 2000s, their son Thibault joined the estate and brought a new dynamic. Passionate, curious and deeply committed to a philosophy of living viticulture, he fully took the reins in 2009 and set in motion a decisive transformation. Under his leadership, the estate began its conversion to organic farming in 2014, obtained organic certification in 2018, and then adopted the principles of biodynamics across all its parcels. Today, father and son continue to perpetuate a tradition of transmission and excellence that is the hallmark of Domaine Morey-Coffinet.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Morey-Coffinet

The vineyard of Domaine Morey-Coffinet spans 8.5 hectares spread across several prestigious appellations of the Côte de Beaune, with a main concentration around Chassagne-Montrachet. Approximately 5.5 to 6 hectares are planted with Chardonnay, the remainder with Pinot Noir. All soils are systematically ploughed, a rare and demanding practice that reflects the estate's commitment to the vitality of the subsoil.

In Chassagne-Montrachet, the estate holds parcels in some of the commune's most renowned premier crus: En Cailleret (0.65 ha spread across two complementary plots, between 285 and 300 metres in altitude, with clay-limestone soils), La Romanée (one of Chassagne's rarest crus, barely 65 ares, a direct neighbour of Montrachet), Blanchot-Dessus (a terroir of exceptional mineral depth, neighbouring Bâtard-Montrachet), Dent de Chien (a cru of subtle elegance, with notes of lemon and ginger), and En Remilly. The estate also holds vines in Puligny-Montrachet, notably in the mythical premier crus Les Pucelles and Les Combettes, two terroirs of incomparable finesse and complexity, at the gates of the grand crus. Finally, at grand cru level, the estate farms a 13-are parcel of Bâtard-Montrachet, planted in 1996 on the Chassagne side, and has access to Corton-Charlemagne, sourced from young vines east-facing on grey marl soils above Ladoix.

The estate's soils, predominantly clay-limestone with marly nuances depending on the plot, lend the wines their double signature: power and minerality on one hand, freshness and aromatic finesse on the other.

Winemaking at Domaine Morey-Coffinet

The cellar of Domaine Morey-Coffinet is where the philosophy of terroir takes shape. Thibault Morey practises winemaking as natural as possible, attentive to each vintage. Fermentations are carried out with indigenous yeasts, without the use of synthetic exogenous yeasts, which promotes the authentic expression of the grape and the place.

The use of sulphur has been drastically reduced over the years; Thibault no longer uses it at harvest, in order to preserve the purity of the aromas and the vitality of the wine. Ageing takes place in oak barrels of different capacities: 228, 350 and 400 litres, with a proportion of new oak tailored to each cuvée and each vintage (from 30–35% for premier crus to 50–60% for grand crus). This fine modulation adds complexity without ever overwhelming the fruit or masking the terroir.

Ageing periods have been progressively extended under Thibault's stewardship, in order to allow the wines to develop their full depth before bottling. No filtration is carried out for the most noble cuvées, so as to preserve their natural density and texture. The result: wines that achieve a remarkable balance between fullness and tension, fruit and minerality, generosity and freshness. Wines that are described as "alive" — hedonistic and precise in equal measure.

The Cuvées of Domaine Morey-Coffinet

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru En Cailleret: Sourced from two complementary plots on clay-limestone soils, aged 15 months in barrels with 35% new oak, this premier cru delivers an intense golden colour, a bouquet of flint, white flowers, white fruits and hazelnuts. The palate is powerful and unctuous, driven by mineral tension and grilled, honeyed and fruity notes. A wine of character and great ageing potential.

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Romanée: One of Chassagne's rarest and most sought-after crus, with only 65 ares in total. On this terroir — a direct neighbour of Montrachet — the rock sets the tone: empyreumatic notes, ripe stone fruits (peach, apricot, pineapple), pear and passion fruit. A wine of abyssal depth, which will reward long patience in the cellar.

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Blanchot-Dessus: An exceptional terroir neighbouring Bâtard-Montrachet, this premier cru reveals an uncommon mineral intensity. Dense, full of fruit and soil character, with remarkable depth. In great vintages, it tends to rival the grand crus.

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Dent de Chien: This climat produces a wine of singular finesse: notes of lemon, ginger and flowers, with a surprising richness perfectly balanced by a fresh and persistent minerality. Elegance and straightforwardness define this captivating cru.

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru En Remilly: Located in the south of the appellation, this premier cru delivers a discreet nose that opens up to reveal great finesse, with a refined and well-structured palate. A wine of great class, to be cellared for a few years.

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles: This mythical premier cru at the gates of Montrachet reveals the full genius of Thibault Morey: a wine that is simultaneously concentrated and ethereal, rich with indulgent fruit carrying exotic accents, imbued with the graceful freshness of small white flowers.

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes: This terroir on the border of Meursault-Charmes delivers a wine of great nuance: floral delicacy, sensual and buttery fruitiness, scintillating minerality. Expressive, complex and of very great class. A fine demonstration of the estate's mastery of Chardonnay.

Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru: From a confidential 13-are plot planted in 1996 on the Chassagne side of the grand cru, this wine represents the pinnacle of the estate's white wine pyramid. Clay-limestone soils, ideal sun exposure, 16 months of ageing in 350-litre barrels with 50% new oak: everything contributes to the creation of a wine of extraordinary power and complexity. The colour is golden, the bouquet evokes white fruits, poached pear, exotic fruits, citrus zest, fresh almond, toasted hazelnut and chalk. The palate is dense and unctuous, underpinned by a smoky minerality of remarkable depth.

Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru: The estate's second white grand cru, sourced from vines situated above Ladoix, east-facing on grey marl soils. This Corton-Charlemagne reveals a beautiful energy driven by the vitality of the fruit, a deep mineral vibration and subtly integrated oak. Notes of fresh fruit, a touch of lime and the smoky imprint typical of this grand cru. A wine with very great ageing potential.

Corton Grand Cru (red): The estate's third grand cru, and its only red grand cru. Sourced from Pinot Noir on the powerful soils of Corton, this wine delivers a generous, muscular and aromatic profile, with notes of roasted red and black fruits, a silky texture and remarkable balance. A great red wine built for ageing, representative of the estate's dual mastery of Burgundy's two flagship grape varieties.
