History of the François Bertheau Estate

The François Bertheau wine estate, located in Chambolle-Musigny, is a family establishment whose history stretches back several generations. François Bertheau himself has played a key role in the development and renown of the estate, today very well known for its Bourgogne Rouges

The history of the estate is rooted in the winemaking tradition of Burgundy, a region renowned for its exceptional wines. The Bertheau family, through the generations, has preserved and perfected the methods of vine cultivation and winemaking, passing down a precious expertise from father to son.

François Bertheau, as a winemaker, has brought his own contribution to the estate's reputation. His efforts have been focused on the pursuit of excellence, both in the vineyards and in the cellar. The village of Chambolle-Musigny, renowned for its delicate and expressive red wines, offers a unique terroir that has been masterfully exploited by the François Bertheau estate.

The estate has undergone many changes over the years, but the constant has been a commitment to quality. François Bertheau has contributed to maintaining and elevating the estate's reputation, producing wines that captivate connoisseurs and enthusiasts from around the world.

Vines and Winemaking

Located in Chambolle-Musigny at the heart of the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy, the François Bertheau estate extends over 6 hectares of vines, composed mainly of Pinot Noir, cultivated with great precision on calcareous and clay-limestone soils. The vines, averaging 45 years of age, are carefully tended by the winemaker, who applies a deep understanding of the terroir.

Winemaking at the François Bertheau estate is based on traditional practices and meticulous attention to detail. The grapes, harvested at optimal ripeness, undergo aging of approximately 18 months in oak barrels, of which 20 to 30% are new. The wine, unfiltered, is bottled after 18 months of aging and released to market six months later. The estate's wines stand out for their elegance, aromatic complexity and ability to reflect the distinctive character of their terroirs.

The Wines of the François Bertheau Estate

The François Bertheau estate produces elegant and delicate red wines from the Pinot Noir grape variety, displaying a harmony, finesse and purity characteristic of François Bertheau's winemaking expertise. These wines stand out for their fruity character, power and complexity, both on the nose and on the palate.

The estate offers wines of the Bonnes Mares appellation, among the most prestigious Grand Crus of Burgundy. These red wines reveal on the nose aromas of violet with subtle nuances of animal notes, moss and wet earth. Their aging potential extends from 30 to 50 years. A delightful Grand Cru de Bourgogne

Chambolle-Musigny wines are also produced by the estate (Chambolle-Musigny, Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru, Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Les Amoureuses, Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Les Charmes, and Chambolle-Musigny Grand Cru). These wines are generally enjoyed in their youth, although the best vintages have the capacity to age well. Superb Premiers Crus de Bourgogne

François Bertheau - Bonnes Mares: The Pinot Noir, sourced from 40-year-old vines, draws its nutrients from the clay-limestone soils. In the cellar, the wine rests peacefully for 18 months in oak barrels, of which approximately 20 to 30% are new wood. After a well-deserved maturation, the wine displays a magnificent ruby red robe with mauve highlights. The aromatic notes reveal delicate nuances of red fruits (raspberry, redcurrant), cherry brandy, precious wood, cocoa and soft spices, as well as floral touches of rose and lilac. Supple, refined and silky, this wine seduces with the softness of its tannins and its aromatic persistence, forming superb pairings with tender meat, a regional cheese (époisses) or a pumpkin gratin with mushrooms.

François Bertheau Chambolle Musigny Premier Cru Les Charmes: The winemaker attaches great importance to understanding the terroir, characterized by clay and limestone soils from which the noble grape variety draws its elegance. The wine matures for 18 months in barrels, with a proportion of 20 to 30% new wood, thus revealing its complexity. After a well-deserved few years of aging, this wine reveals itself in a balanced register, combining elegance, character and power. With a dense texture, it charms with its complex bouquet. Enthusiasts will recognize classic Pinot Noir notes such as red and black fruits, violet and white pepper, as well as evolved aromas of prune, mushrooms, truffle and musk. We recommend enjoying it with characterful dishes, such as a truffle brie.
