History of Domaine Bart

The history of Domaine Bart has its roots in the terroir of Marsannay-la-Côte spanning six generations, making this family estate one of the oldest wine-producing domaines in the commune. Originally a modest six-hectare holding, the estate experienced a decisive expansion in 1985 upon the dissolution of the celebrated Domaine Clair-Daü, a significant share of whose vines was passed by inheritance to Martin and Odile Bart, cousins of Bruno Clair. This historic addition allowed the estate to access prestigious appellations, notably the Grands Crus of the Côte de Nuits.

Martin and Odile Bart, who arrived at the property in 1982, founded a GAEC (Groupement Agricole d'Exploitation en Commun) in 1987 in order to perpetuate the family expertise. Today, it is Pierre Bart who continues this family adventure with exemplary rigour and a vision resolutely focused on precision and finesse. It should be noted that the ancestor of the Clair family, from which this lineage originates, created the very first Marsannay rosé as early as 1919, thereby contributing to the historical renown of the appellation.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Bart

The vineyards of Domaine Bart extend over more than twenty hectares at the heart of the Côte de Nuits, embracing a mosaic of terroirs among the most distinguished in Burgundy. Marsannay forms the historic cradle of the estate and remains its flagship appellation: the only communal appellation in the Côte de Nuits to produce reds, whites and rosés alike, it offers a unique palette of climats with varied geological profiles. The estate works numerous renowned lieux-dits there, such as Les Longeroies, Les Ouzeloy, Au Champ Salomon, Clos du Roy, Es Chezots, Les Finottes, Les Grandes Vignes, La Montagne, Saint-Jacques, Les Favières and Les Etalles.

Beyond Marsannay, Domaine Bart holds fine plots in Fixin (Premier Cru Les Hervelets), in Chambolle-Musigny (Premier Cru Les Véroilles) and in Santenay (En Bievau). The crown of the range rests on two prestigious Grands Crus: Bonnes-Mares, straddling Morey-Saint-Denis and Chambolle-Musigny, as well as the mythical Chambertin Clos de Bèze in Gevrey-Chambertin. The soils, blending Jurassic clays, limestone and marl, confer a unique mineral signature on each cuvée. The king grape variety is Pinot Noir, accounting for 90%, complemented by Chardonnay (including a precious Chardonnay Musqué on Les Favières) for the whites.

Vinifications at Domaine Bart

The winemaking philosophy at Domaine Bart can be summed up in one word: fidelity to the terroir. The vineyard is managed according to the principles of reasoned viticulture, with soil work favouring biodiversity and a very limited use of inputs. Harvesting is carried out exclusively by hand, followed by meticulous sorting in the cellar using a high-performance sorting table, guaranteeing the purity of the grapes entering the vat. Optimal berry ripeness is sought vintage after vintage.

In the cellar, the approach is deliberately classic and minimally interventionist. A cold pre-maceration extracts the natural fruitiness of the bunches, followed by fermentations conducted with indigenous yeasts. Ageing takes place in oak barrels, with a measured proportion of new wood so as never to mask the expression of the climats. This precise winemaking, combined with gentle racking and respectful bottling, gives birth to wines of great frankness, at once elegant, digestible and capable of fine ageing.

The Cuvées of Domaine Bart

The Marsannay Rosé embodies the historic soul of the estate, heir to the very first Marsannay rosé created in 1919. Made from Pinot Noir, it reveals a delicate salmon robe and an expressive nose of vine peach and redcurrant. The palate combines freshness and generous roundness, perfect as an aperitif as well as with fine charcuterie.

The Marsannay Blanc Les Favières is a rare cuvée crafted from Chardonnay Musqué, an aromatic mutation of Chardonnay with notes reminiscent of Muscat. This white wine captivates with its aromatic depth, its floral notes and its assertive minerality, pairing wonderfully with poultry and noble fish.

The Marsannay Blanc Les Etalles, vinified from traditional Chardonnay, offers a pure and taut profile, with a fine lemony freshness and a saline finish. Elegant and precise, it demonstrates Domaine Bart's ability to shine equally with its whites.

The Marsannay Les Longeroies is one of the flagship cuvées of the estate. Its purple robe heralds a floral nose of rose and violet, followed by a generous palate of raspberry, blackcurrant and fine spiced notes. A wine of great finesse, built for ageing.

The Marsannay Les Ouzeloy seduces with its dynamism and silky structure. The fruitiness is intense, fleshy and supported by fine tannins, delivering a thoroughbred and vibrant Marsannay.

The Marsannay Les Grandes Vignes displays a ruby robe and a floral nose marked by lilac, rose and violet. The palate, flavoursome and well-ripened, proves balanced, sapid and accessible young — an excellent ambassador of the climat.

The Marsannay Au Champ Salomon offers an enticing spiced nose, followed by a tender, sensual and languid palate, with slightly candied fruit. A generous and aromatic pleasure cuvée.

The Marsannay Es Chezots stands out for its finesse and depth, deploying an aromatic expression centred on blackcurrant and dark fruits. Its velvety texture makes it a very complete wine.

The Marsannay Les Finottes offers a more supple Pinot Noir, with melted tannins and fresh acidity, perfect for early drinking while presenting a lovely structure.

The Marsannay Clos du Roy, from a prestigious climat at the gates of Chenôve, delivers a straight, chiselled wine endowed with superb saline minerality. A thoroughbred cuvée with great ageing potential.

The Marsannay La Montagne, planted on the stony heights of the appellation, yields a taut, airy and expressive wine, with a fine texture and vibrant fruit.

The Marsannay Saint-Jacques expresses a fuller character, with deep fruit, notes of black cherry and a dense substance, combining indulgence and elegance.

The Fixin Premier Cru Les Hervelets reveals an enticing smoky nose, adorned with notes of bark and red fruit jelly. The palate, sapid and structured, rests on fine tannins and offers a fine ageing potential.

The Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Les Véroilles expresses all the aerial finesse and aromatic lacework characteristic of Chambolle, sublimated by the precise signature of the Bart house: a floral, silky and deeply thoroughbred wine.

The Santenay En Bievau, from the Côte de Beaune, brings a different note to the range with a generous, fruity and approachable Pinot Noir, endowed with fine aromatic frankness.

The Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru represents one of the summits of the estate. From an exceptional plot on the border between Morey-Saint-Denis and Chambolle-Musigny, it marries power and elegance, deploying aromas of ripe dark fruits, smoky notes and gentle spices, carried by a fine and silky tannic structure. A wine of very great ageing potential.

The Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru crowns the range with incomparable majesty. Its deep robe precedes a complex nose blending grilled, toasted and fruity aromas (blackberry, black cherry, blueberry) heightened by a touch of liquorice. The palate combines amplitude, suaveness and complex tannins, on an endless length — the absolute signature of this legendary climat of Gevrey-Chambertin.
