History of Domaine Bart

Domaine Bart’s history has been rooted in the terroir of Marsannay-la-Côte for six generations, making this family-owned winery one of the town’s oldest wine estates. Originally a modest six-hectare operation, the estate expanded significantly in 1985 when the renowned Domaine Clair-Daü was dissolved and Martin and Odile Bart, cousins of Bruno Clair, inherited a substantial portion of its vineyards. This historic inheritance gave the estate access to prestigious appellations, notably the Grands Crus of the Côte de Nuits.

Martin and Odile Bart, who joined the estate in 1982, established a GAEC (a jointly operated agricultural partnership) in 1987 to preserve the family’s expertise. Today, Pierre Bart carries on this family endeavor with exemplary rigor and a firm focus on precision and finesse. It is worth recalling that an ancestor of the Clair family, from which this lineage descends, created the very first Marsannay rosé in 1919, helping establish the appellation’s historic reputation.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Bart

Domaine Bart’s vineyards extend across more than twenty hectares in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, encompassing a mosaic of some of Burgundy’s most distinguished terroirs. Marsannay is the estate’s historic home and remains its flagship appellation. The only village appellation in the Côte de Nuits to produce reds, whites, and rosés, it offers a unique range of climats with varied geology. The estate works numerous renowned lieux-dits here, including Les Longeroies, Les Ouzeloy, Au Champ Salomon, Clos du Roy, Es Chezots, Les Finottes, Les Grandes Vignes, La Montagne, Saint-Jacques, Les Favières, and Les Etalles.

Beyond Marsannay, Domaine Bart owns fine parcels in Fixin (Premier Cru Les Hervelets), Chambolle-Musigny (Premier Cru Les Véroilles), and Santenay (En Bievau). Two prestigious Grands Crus crown the range: Bonnes-Mares, straddling Morey-Saint-Denis and Chambolle-Musigny, and the legendary Chambertin Clos de Bèze in Gevrey-Chambertin. Soils combining Jurassic clays, limestones, and marls give each cuvée a unique mineral signature. Pinot Noir is the dominant grape, accounting for 90%, complemented by Chardonnay—including prized Chardonnay Musqué from Les Favières—for the whites.

Winemaking at Domaine Bart

The winemaking philosophy at Domaine Bart can be summed up in one word: fidelity to the terroir. The vineyards are managed according to sustainable viticulture principles, with soil practices that favor biodiversity and very limited use of inputs. Harvesting is done entirely by hand, followed by meticulous sorting in the cellar using an advanced sorting table to ensure that only sound grapes enter the vats. Optimal grape ripeness is sought vintage after vintage.

In the cellar, the approach is deliberately traditional and hands-off. Cold pre-maceration draws out the grapes’ natural fruit character, followed by fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Aging takes place in oak barrels, with a measured proportion of new oak so that it never obscures the expression of the climats. This precise winemaking, together with gentle racking and careful bottling, produces wines of remarkable clarity: elegant, easy-drinking, and capable of aging beautifully.

The cuvées of Domaine Bart

Marsannay Rosé embodies the estate’s history, carrying on the legacy of the first Marsannay rosé, created in 1919. Made from Pinot Noir, it reveals a delicate salmon hue and an expressive nose of vineyard peach and redcurrant. The palate combines freshness with a generous roundness, making it ideal as an aperitif or with fine charcuterie.

Marsannay Blanc Les Favières is a rare cuvée made from Chardonnay Musqué, an aromatic mutation of Chardonnay with notes reminiscent of Muscat. This white wine charms with its aromatic depth, floral notes, and pronounced minerality, and pairs beautifully with poultry and fine fish.

Marsannay Blanc Les Etalles, made from Chardonnay using traditional methods, offers a pure, taut profile, with bright lemony freshness and a saline finish. Elegant and precise, it shows that Domaine Bart excels with white wines too.

Marsannay Les Longeroies is one of the estate’s signature cuvées. Its purple hue introduces a floral nose of rose and violet, followed by a generous palate of raspberry, blackcurrant, and delicate spice notes. A wine of great finesse, built to age.

Marsannay Les Ouzeloy charms with its energy and silky structure. Its intense, fleshy fruit is supported by fine tannins, making for a distinguished Marsannay full of verve.

Marsannay Les Grandes Vignes displays a ruby hue and a floral nose marked by lilac, rose, and violet. Flavorful and ripe, the palate is balanced and savory, and the wine is approachable young—an excellent ambassador for its climat.

Marsannay Au Champ Salomon offers an enticing spicy nose, followed by a tender, sensual, unhurried palate with slightly candied fruit. A generous, aromatic cuvée made for pleasure.

Marsannay Es Chezots stands out for its finesse and depth, with aromas centered on blackcurrant and dark fruit. Its velvety texture makes it a beautifully complete wine.

Marsannay Les Finottes offers a more supple Pinot Noir, with softened tannins and fresh acidity. It is ideal for drinking young while still showing lovely structure.

Marsannay Clos du Roy, from a prestigious climat near Chenôve, is a focused, finely etched wine with superb saline minerality. A distinguished cuvée with excellent aging potential.

Marsannay La Montagne, grown on the appellation’s stony heights, yields a taut, airy, expressive wine with a fine structure and vibrant fruit.

Marsannay Saint-Jacques has a fleshier character, with deep fruit, notes of black cherry, and a dense texture that combines generosity and elegance.

Fixin Premier Cru Les Hervelets reveals an enticing smoky nose accented by notes of bark and red fruit jelly. The savory, structured palate rests on fine tannins and offers excellent aging potential.

Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Les Véroilles expresses all the airy finesse and delicate aromatic complexity characteristic of Chambolle, elevated by the precise touch of Domaine Bart: a floral, silky, deeply distinguished wine.

From the Côte de Beaune, Santenay En Bievau brings a different note to the range: a generous, fruity, approachable Pinot Noir with clear, appealing aromas.

Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is one of the estate’s finest wines. From an exceptional parcel on the border between Morey-Saint-Denis and Chambolle-Musigny, it marries power with elegance, unfolding aromas of ripe dark fruit, smoky notes, and sweet spices over a fine, silky tannic structure. A wine built for very long aging.

Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru crowns the range with incomparable majesty. Its deep color precedes a complex nose blending toasted, roasted, and fruity aromas (blackberry, black cherry, blueberry), lifted by a hint of licorice. The palate combines breadth, smoothness, and complex tannins with a seemingly endless finish—the unmistakable signature of this legendary Gevrey-Chambertin climat.
