History of the Domaine des Monts Luisants

The history of the Domaine des Monts Luisants begins in the mid-1960s, when Bernard Dufouleur undertook the task of assembling a single-holding estate in Morey-Saint-Denis, at the heart of the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy. Through patient acquisitions and parcel exchanges, he succeeded in bringing together a homogeneous and coherent ensemble, located exclusively on the most emblematic terroirs of the appellation, notably on the climat des Monts Luisants, which would give the estate its name.

From 2000 onwards, the current owner Jean-Marc Dufouleur succeeded his father and signed his first vintage after several years of sharecropping. He replanted new vines, refined practices in the vineyard, and definitively oriented the estate towards the production of Pinot Noirs built for ageing, faithful to the purest tradition of Burgundy. Over the decades, the estate has built a discreet yet solid reputation among lovers of great wines from the Côte de Nuits, cultivating rarity, quality, and terroir expression as its cardinal values.

Terroirs and Vines of the Domaine des Monts Luisants

The vineyard of the Domaine des Monts Luisants extends over 3.4 hectares at the epicentre of the Côte de Nuits, in the commune of Morey-Saint-Denis. The vines, aged between 45 and 50 years, are planted on hillside slopes on very stony clay-limestone soils, with a full easterly exposure that guarantees slow and balanced ripening. This terroir of rare nobility, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the Climats de Bourgogne, offers Pinot Noir an ideal setting in which to express its full complexity.

The estate thus cultivates four emblematic climats of Morey-Saint-Denis: En Pierre Virant and Les Monts Luisants as Village appellation, Les Monts Luisants and Les Genavrières as Premier Cru, not forgetting the mythical Grand Cru Clos de la Roche. The planting is entirely devoted to Pinot Noir, the absolute signature of the great reds of the Côte de Nuits. Work in the vineyard is rigorous and respectful: soil tillage, reasoned pruning in the service of controlled yields, and precise accompaniment of the vegetative cycle in order to obtain a healthy, ripe, and expressive harvest.

Winemaking at the Domaine des Monts Luisants

In the cellar, the Domaine des Monts Luisants champions a distinctive style based on the practice of whole-bunch vinification, a demanding approach that requires perfectly ripe and healthy grapes. This method, characteristic of the great Pinot Noirs of Burgundy, brings great finesse, aromatic complexity and a fine additional freshness on the palate. Jean-Marc Dufouleur advocates a gentle hand in working with the grapes, leaving as much room as possible for the expression of the climat.

Ageing takes place in oak barrels for approximately 18 months, in keeping with Burgundian traditions. The wines are then delicately racked by gravity, before being bottled at the estate, away from any excessive handling. This winemaking approach, faithful to ancient practices, gives rise to refined Pinot Noirs focused less on pure fruit than on complexity, endowed with a fine ageing potential. Over the years, the estate has also assembled a collection of old vintages, bearing witness to the passage of time and the deep identity of this exceptional terroir.

The Cuvées of the Domaine des Monts Luisants

Bourgogne Pinot Noir Réserve Privée: the estate's entry-level cuvée, this Bourgogne Pinot Noir Réserve Privée offers a fine introduction to the house style. Sourced from Pinot Noir, it displays a fresh and fruity nose of cherry and small red fruits, a supple, balanced and refreshing palate that reflects the elegance of the great reds of the Côte de Nuits in an accessible style.

Morey-Saint-Denis Village En Pierre Virant: a village cuvée sourced from the En Pierre Virant climat, this Morey-Saint-Denis stands out for its deep ruby colour, its expressive nose of ripe red fruits, undergrowth and subtle spiced notes. The palate is round, full-bodied and refined, supported by well-integrated tannins and a fresh finish characteristic of the Morey-Saint-Denis terroir.

Morey-Saint-Denis Village Les Monts Luisants: the estate's second village cuvée, sourced from the lower part of the Les Monts Luisants climat. The wine offers a delicate nose of tangy red fruits and flowers, a fleshy, balanced and flavoursome palate, highlighted by a fresh and mineral structure. A Morey-Saint-Denis village of great elegance that improves remarkably with cellaring.

Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Monts Luisants: the estate's great emblematic Premier Cru, sourced from the smallest production surface in the entire Côte de Nuits after Vougeot. Elegant and feminine, this wine unfolds as much on the fruit as on the tannins, guaranteeing fine ageing potential. Its vinous, concentrated and chiselled structure reveals a complex and subtle nose dominated by well-ripened small stone red fruits, humus and liquorice. The palate, warm and powerful, is distinguished, fleshy and rich, built to age for many years.

Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Genavrières: a Premier Cru of character, this Pinot Noir wine stands out for its intense ruby colour and its complex aromatic bouquet blending black fruits (blackberry, blackcurrant), notes of undergrowth, spices and tobacco. On the palate, it is both structured and elegant, endowed with silky tannins and a fine length. Its excellent ageing potential allows this Premier Cru to refine itself over time, gradually revealing its full aromatic complexity.

Clos de la Roche Grand Cru: the jewel of the estate and the most accomplished expression of its terroir, this Grand Cru from Morey-Saint-Denis embodies the quintessence of Burgundian Pinot Noir. The colour is dark and deep; the nose, of great complexity, releases aromas of concentrated black fruits, spices, liquorice and noble undergrowth. The palate, powerful yet of great finesse, is distinguished by its integration, its suppleness and its salivating character. An exceptional cuvée endowed with considerable ageing potential, which reveals itself fully after several years in the cellar.
