The 1954 vintage in Burgundy represents a mediocre and difficult year, marked by a cool and rainy season that hindered ripeness and weakened the harvest. The reds (Pinot Noir) suffered: light, diluted and variable, they lack concentration and colour, with only rare successes in the Côte de Nuits. The whites (Chardonnay) are equally understated, diluted and without breadth, from Meursault to Chablis. The ageing potential was very low, and the vast majority of cuvées have today disappeared or are well past any enjoyable drinking. Only the rarest of perfectly preserved bottles still hold any interest. Framed by the charming 1953 and the great 1955, the 1954 remains a minor vintage, of interest only to the most dedicated collector.
