History of Domaine Camus Père et Fils

The history of Domaine Camus Père et Fils dates back to 1732, when the family officially settled in Gevrey-Chambertin to cultivate the vine on the legendary hillsides of the Côte de Nuits. Over the centuries and more than eight generations, the Camus family has patiently built one of the finest viticultural estates in Burgundy, focusing on the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin, the land of the world's greatest red wines, immortalised by the writer Gaston Roupnel.

Today, the estate is run by the Camus family and the house remains true to its status as an independent family estate, owner-grower. Located at 21 rue Maréchal de Lattre de Tassigny, in Gevrey-Chambertin, the estate sells its wines largely through direct sales, to private customers, businesses and through exports to more than one hundred countries, including the United States, Japan, Switzerland, China, Germany and the United Kingdom.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Camus Père et Fils

The vineyard of Domaine Camus Père et Fils extends over 18 hectares, entirely located in the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin, one of the most prestigious appellations of the Côte de Nuits. Remarkably, approximately 12 hectares (two thirds of the estate) are classified as Grand Cru, making it one of the largest holders of Grand Cru vineyards in Gevrey. The estate notably owns parcels in five Grand Crus of the appellation: Chambertin (the most prestigious of all), Mazis-Chambertin (sometimes spelled Mazy), Latricières-Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin and Mazoyères-Chambertin. The remaining third is divided between the village appellation Gevrey-Chambertin (with a parcel in the Premier Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques) and the regional appellation Bourgogne.

The soils of Gevrey-Chambertin are of remarkable diversity: brown calcareous and brown limestone soils on the village parcels located on the lower slopes, characteristic outcroppings of Prémeaux limestone on the finest hillsides, marl-limestone on the Grand Crus, which give Pinot Noir — the estate's sole grape variety — that depth, power and exceptional ageing potential that have made the appellation legendary. The vines, often old, are tended in the purest respect of Burgundian tradition. The harvest is exclusively manual, allowing rigorous selection of the grapes from the moment of picking.

Winemaking at Domaine Camus Père et Fils

In the cellar, Domaine Camus Père et Fils has remained faithful to a traditional Burgundian winemaking style, which favours the expression of terroir over technical modernity. After sorting in the vineyard and the winery, the Pinot Noir grapes are vinified according to ancestral methods: cold pre-fermentation maceration of several days, fermentation in vats with measured pigeage and pumping over, and long vatting to gently extract substance and colour. Temperatures are carefully monitored to preserve the typical aromas of each climat.

Ageing then takes place entirely in oak barrels for an extended period of between 16 and 18 months depending on the cuvée. This ageing duration, considerably longer than the Burgundian average, allows the estate's great wines to gain in complexity, harmony and ageing potential. The proportion of new oak is carefully measured, with the aim of supporting the substance without masking the aromatic expression of the terroir. This traditional approach, combined with the exceptional nobility of the estate's Grand Crus, yields powerful, structured wines built to age for several decades in the cellar and reveal their full greatness to the patient wine lover.

The cuvées of Domaine Camus Père et Fils

The Bourgogne Aligoté is the estate's only white cuvée, crafted from the region's emblematic grape variety. A fresh and taut wine, marked by aromas of citrus, green apple and white flowers, with a lively palate and a saline finish — the perfect aperitif or ideal accompaniment to seafood.

The Bourgogne Rouge is the estate's entry-level red wine, crafted from young Pinot Noir vines grown in Gevrey-Chambertin. A pleasant and fruity wine, endowed with aromas of red fruits, a round palate and fine acidity — an excellent value for discovering the house style.

The Bourgogne Rosé is a pleasurable and convivial cuvée from the estate, crafted from Pinot Noir. A pale robe with salmon highlights, a nose of small red fruits (strawberry, raspberry), a fresh and thirst-quenching palate — perfect for summer aperitifs and light meals.

The Gevrey-Chambertin Village is a blend of several village parcels located within the commune. A full-bodied Pinot Noir, marked by typical aromas of spices, soft herbs and ripe red fruits, supported by a sweet, taut and persistent palate, in the great tradition of the flagship red wine appellation of the Côte de Nuits.

The Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques comes from one of the finest Premiers Crus of the appellation, situated on the steep hillside just above the village. A profound and refined Pinot Noir, endowed with a noble tannic structure, complex aromas of dark fruits, spices and undergrowth, and excellent ageing potential.

The Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is the most accessible and seductive Grand Cru in the range. A Pinot Noir with a mineral and profound nose, endowed with a refined palate of silky texture, great depth of flavours and a long finish that slowly blossoms. It is an inviting Grand Cru, complex and deeply expressive of its terroir.

The Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru is a Grand Cru historically linked to Charmes-Chambertin but which may be sold under its own name. An aromatic and profound Pinot Noir, endowed with a dense substance, aromas of ripe cherry, truffle and spices, with a noble tannic structure and great ageing capacity.

The Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru (also spelled Mazy) is one of the most structured Grand Crus of Gevrey. A powerful and profound wine, marked by intense aromas of dark fruits, liquorice and peony, supported by a firm and noble tannic structure, built for very long ageing.

The Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru is a Grand Cru neighbouring Chambertin, situated slightly higher on the hillside. A Pinot Noir of great finesse, marked by refined aromas of red and dark fruits, flowers and spices, endowed with a sharp mineral structure and an aristocratic elegance characteristic of this climat.

The Chambertin Grand Cru is the absolute jewel of the estate and one of the most prestigious wines in the world. Nicknamed "the king of wines and the wine of kings", this mythical Grand Cru offers exceptional aromatic concentration, a dense and profound substance, a regal tannic structure and phenomenal length. It is a wine built for very long ageing, faithful to the legend of an appellation that has brought glory to Burgundy throughout the world.
