Noël Ramonet

Wines from Domaine Noël Ramonet: buy at the best price

Domaine Noël Ramonet, also signed Noël Ramonet et Fils, is one of the most eagerly awaited new estates in recent Burgundy. Stemming from the legendary Ramonet family of Chassagne-Montrachet, it came into being with the 2023 vintage, when Noël Ramonet, long the man tending the vines of the family domaine, decided to vinify and market himself the harvest from his own parcels, alongside his sons Michael and Pierre-François. The heritage is exceptional: historic premier crus from Chassagne-Montrachet such as Les Ruchottes and Les Caillerets, and above all the grand crus Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet and Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet. The style remains true to the Ramonet signature: purity, mineral structure, restrained elegance, discreet oak and energy.

History of Domaine Noël Ramonet

The history of Domaine Noël Ramonet cannot be understood without that of the parent estate. In the late 1920s, Pierre Ramonet arrived in Chassagne-Montrachet with almost nothing, beginning by purchasing grapes before acquiring, in 1934, his first plot in the premier cru Les Ruchottes. Spotted as early as the 1930s by Raymond Baudoin and American importer Frank Schoonmaker, he built an international reputation, then acquired in 1978 the ultimate jewel: 0.26 hectares of Montrachet, paid for in cash. An exchange of vines with Domaine Chartron later brought Chevalier-Montrachet, and the family estate reached 17 hectares spread across Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, Saint-Aubin, Bouzeron and Pernand-Vergelesses.

The third generation, shaped by brothers Noël and Jean-Claude Ramonet, took the reins in 1984. Roles divided naturally: Jean-Claude took charge of winemaking and sales, while Noël devoted himself entirely to work in the vineyard and cellar. From around 2013, the structure was reorganised under the name of Jean-Claude Ramonet, and labels henceforth bore that name. Noël then chose to cultivate his own plots and sell his grapes to his brother, who vinified them as a négociant operation from the 2014 vintage. This arrangement lasted around ten years, until the family agreed, by mutual consent, to take separate paths in order to bring new projects to life. In 2023, Noël Ramonet launched his own label, surrounded by his sons Michael and Pierre-François, while Jean-Claude continued at the helm of the historic estate with his daughters Anne-France and Clarisse. This split — common in Burgundy, where successions fragment holdings — explains the coexistence on the market of several labels bearing the Ramonet name, each corresponding to a distinct branch of the family.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Noël Ramonet

The plots farmed by Noël Ramonet lie at the heart of Chassagne-Montrachet, a village at the southern tip of the Côte de Beaune whose clay-limestone soils, rich in white marls and scree, offer Chardonnay a rare combination of breadth and tension. The estate thus holds vines in the premier cru Les Ruchottes — the family's historic heartland since 1934, situated high on the slope on very lean limestone soils that yield precise, mentholated wines — as well as in Les Caillerets, one of the most complete climates in the appellation, renowned for its balance between density and freshness.

Most impressive of all is the estate's presence on the Montrachet hill, straddling Chassagne and Puligny, where the domaine holds micro-plots in Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet and Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet — three of the greatest Chardonnay terroirs in the world. The surface areas are measured in fractions of a hectare, limiting production to a few hundred bottles per cuvée per vintage. The family also retains plots in other historic climates of Chassagne, notably Les Vergers, Morgeot and La Boudriotte, whose bottlings vary according to vintages and allocations. The viticultural philosophy remains that handed down by Pierre Ramonet: old vines, severely controlled yields, soil cultivation, reasoned pest management and entirely hand-harvested grapes.

Winemaking at Domaine Noël Ramonet

Noël Ramonet spent several decades observing and practising the family's winemaking before signing his own bottles, and he perpetuates its principles without a break. The grapes are pressed slowly, the musts carefully settled, then transferred directly into French oak barrels, where fermentation begins thanks solely to the indigenous yeasts present on the berries. No added yeasts, no corrections: the vintage must express itself as it is.

The ageing takes place on fine lees for twelve to eighteen months depending on the cru's rank, with deliberately restrained bâtonnage aimed at preserving mineral definition rather than seeking richness. New oak is used sparingly and graduated according to the hierarchy of appellations, the objective being to support the material without ever marking the wine. Bottlings are carried out with a minimum of intervention. The result is immediately recognisable to anyone familiar with the Ramonet style: crystalline purity, a pronounced mineral structure, restrained elegance, integrated oak and an energy that runs through the palate from start to finish, with an ageing potential measured in decades.

The Cuvées of Domaine Noël Ramonet

The Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc is the entry point into the estate's world, and it is already of a remarkable standard. Sourced from village-level plots farmed with the same exacting standards as the higher crus, this Chardonnay displays a brilliant pale gold colour, a nose of ripe white fruits, acacia blossom and fresh hazelnut, an ample yet perfectly delineated palate, and a chalky finish that is the hallmark of the house. It is the most accessible bottle in the range, and undoubtedly the finest introduction to the work of Noël Ramonet.

The Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Ruchottes has been the family's flagship wine since 1934, and it retains that status under the new label. Planted high on the slope on very lean soils, this climat produces a mineral, mentholated white of almost austere austerity in its youth, with a powerful palate, silky texture and exceptional length. It requires several years of cellaring to reveal its full breadth and can easily be kept for twenty years. The Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets, one of the most complete climates in the appellation, is more immediately appealing: dense material, aromas of candied citrus and white fruits, a remarkable balance between richness and tension, and a very persistent saline finish.

The Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru offers the most refined and floral expression among the estate's grand crus. Elegant, precisely chiselled, marked by white flowers, candied lemon and a deep chalky minerality, it combines the power of a grand cru with an airy delicacy, finishing with a luminous, vibrant length. Produced in only a few hundred bottles, it ranks among the most sought-after whites of any given vintage.

The Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, for its part, embodies the power and opulence of the hill. Its golden colour heralds an ample and generous palate, a bouquet of ripe white fruits, hazelnut butter, honey and flint, a broad and dense mouthfeel supported by a thoroughbred acidity, and a finish of impressive intensity. This is a wine for very long ageing, needing a decade to fully unfold.

The Montrachet Grand Cru represents the absolute pinnacle of the collection and one of the most mythical white wines in the world. Produced from the plot acquired by Pierre Ramonet in 1978 and made in infinitesimally small quantities, it combines extraordinary aromatic complexity, rare density and brilliance, a texture that is simultaneously powerful and crystalline, and an interminable finish. Its ageing capacity exceeds thirty years, making it a highly sought-after collector's piece the world over.

The range is completed, depending on the vintage and volumes available, by other historic Chassagne-Montrachet climates from the family estate, notably the Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers, fresh and full-bodied with citrus notes, the Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot, more structured and sun-drenched with ripe fruit character, and the Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Boudriotte, broad and persistent. As the domaine is very young — 2023 being its first vintage — its range is being built up progressively and the available cuvées vary from one year to the next, which further enhances the rarity and appeal of these bottles for collectors.
