Leon Barral

Wines from the Léon Barral estate: buy at the best price

Located in the Languedoc in the hamlet of Lenthéric, the Léon Barral estate has been managed since 1990 by Didier Barral, the son of Léon Barral, assisted by his brother Jean-Luc. The vineyard covers 35 hectares, planted on very steep, schist hillsides facing south and sheltered by the foothills of the Cévennes. A farming approach has been implemented here that respects the natural environment and its biodiversity, by choosing to promote interactions between the vine and the life of the soils, with the aim of strengthening the vine's immunity.

At the Léon Barral estate, the vines are weeded by a herd of cows, the tractor has been replaced by a mule, the soil is rich in earthworms, and there are even grape worms, flies, bird nests and toads… All of this allows for a very authentic expression of the grape, without any chemical or synthetic additives. Even the cellar was dug directly into the hillside schist, following an architectural style of arcades and vaulted ceilings in cut stone and lime. All of this promotes air circulation for the aging and storage of the wine, and the earthen floor is there to maintain a cool temperature. The estate offers 4 wine cuvées, 3 in AOC Faugères (Languedoc reds) and 1 as a Vin de France (Languedoc white). In red wine: the Tradition cuvée in AOC Faugères is made from a blend of 60% carignan, 30% grenache and 10% cinsault, and comes from the steep slopes of deep schists of the appellation (aged in tank exclusively). The Faugères Tradition from Leon Barral displays powerful, spicy, gamey and floral notes. The Faugères Jadis from Leon Barral: this elegant cuvée is produced with 50% old carignan, 40% syrah and 10% grenache. It benefits from 2 years of aging in old oak barrels. The nose is intense and indulgent, with blackcurrant and blueberry, complemented by leather, black olives and garrigue herbs. The palate is broad, with freshness and a silky finish. A truly beautiful wine emblematic of the AOC Faugères. The Faugères La Valinière cuvée from the Leon Barral estate is crafted from 80% mourvèdre and 20% syrah, and benefits from 36 months of aging in old oak barrels. Its profile is more intense and ripe, with notes of blackcurrant, cherries, wilted rose, mocha, pepper and liquorice. Its power and density are exceptional. It is advisable to wait at least 5 to 7 years before approaching La Valinière from Léon Barral. In white wine, the Terret blanc cuvée (Vin de France) is made from 80% terret blanc/gris, 10% roussanne and 10% viognier. It offers a beautiful freshness and deep minerality, but must absolutely be kept cool, as no sulfur has been added. With a very golden, almost orange color, its nose is very intense, with notes of almond and apricot kernel, garrigue herbs and flower honey. The palate is rich and broad, yet lively and taut with a long finish on smoky yellow fruits. The wines of the Leon Barral estate today represent one of the most accomplished expressions of the Languedoc. It is nevertheless advisable to aerate them well before drinking, as some reduction notes can occasionally unsettle certain enthusiasts.
