The Bel Air estate is located in Benais, right next to Bourgueil, in the heart of its appellation terroir, in the Loire Valley. Pierre Gauthier succeeded his father there in 1979, and following his meeting with Denis Duveau (winemaker) and Philippe Noyé who sold wine to restaurateurs, he decided from 1995 to gradually abandon conventional viticulture to fully convert his vineyard (20 hectares) to organic agriculture (Ecocert certified) by the year 2000, with complete soil work.

The TOP winemakers of Loire

Joined by his son Rodolphe since 2005, Domaine du Bel Air has distinguished itself on the Bourgueil terroir with a heritage of old Cabernet Franc situated on the greatest terroirs of Bourgueil, through which Domaine du Bel Air produces wines of great intensity combining concentration, finesse and elegance. Pierre Gauthier took advantage of this organic conversion to showcase his various terroirs in a range of wines that currently proves very comprehensive. With the acquisition in 2005 of a parcel named "Clos Nouveau," and after restoring the walls and working the soils, the choice proved rewarding since from the 2007 vintage onwards, we witnessed a true renaissance of this "Clos Nouveau." This cuvée thus added a very great wine to the Domaine du Bel Air range. A very coherent range composed of 5 Bourgueil cuvées: Jour de soif, Les Vingt Lieux-dits, Les Marsaules, Grands Monts and Clos Nouveau. It should be noted that the vintages of the last three mentioned cuvées do not leave the estate before 4 to 5 years of aging, Domaine du Bel Air having the privilege of possessing an aging cellar in old caves carved into the tuffeau limestone. The last 3 cuvées are aged 24 months in barrels or demi-muids, with the proportion of new oak varying according to the cuvées and vintages. The Bel Air Jour de Soif cuvée is aged in vats and bottled early in the spring following harvest, and as its name suggests, it is a simpler, more appealing wine to drink for its fruit and youth. The Bel Air les Vingt Lieux Dits cuvée is aged in 2 or 3-year-old barrels for 12 months, and offers a full, frank and concentrated mouth, with pure, intense and delicate fruit (to keep for 4 to 5 years). The Bel Air Les Marsaules cuvée is more complex (24 months aging), and is distinguished by fine earthy and smoky notes. The Bel Air Grands Monts cuvée features blackberry, blueberry, sweet spices and cedar, with a fresh, elegant, pure and digestible palate and striking length. Finally, the Bel Air Clos Nouveau cuvée is even more ambitious, as it is a magnificent wine with possible aging of 10 to 15 years. The entire range of Domaine du Bel Air wines is recommended among the excellent Loire wines.
