Anjou - Saumur

Anjou-Saumur wines: buy at the best price

In the heart of the Loire Valley, between Angers and Saumur, the Anjou-Saumur wine region encompasses 27 appellations across approximately 20,000 hectares, making it one of the region’s largest and most varied winegrowing areas. Two grape varieties dominate. Chenin Blanc produces crisp, dry whites, off-dry wines, and great botrytized dessert wines. Cabernet Franc yields fruity reds, from approachable Saumur-Champigny to Anjou cuvées built for aging. There are also soft rosés, from Rosé d’Anjou to Cabernet d’Anjou, and fine sparkling wines made by the traditional method in cellars carved into tuffeau limestone. One word defines the character of these wines: freshness. Natural acidity balances the ripe fruit and gives the best bottles remarkable aging potential.

Where is the Anjou-Saumur wine region?

The Anjou-Saumur wine region occupies the central Loire Valley, primarily in Maine-et-Loire, with some areas extending into Deux-Sèvres and Vienne. It is centered on Angers to the west and Saumur to the east, along the Loire and its tributaries, the Layon, Aubance and Thouet. Savennières, southwest of Angers, is one of the few appellations located on the river’s right bank. Rochefort-sur-Loire, Beaulieu-sur-Layon, Rablay-sur-Layon, Brissac, Le Puy-Notre-Dame, Chacé and Varrains are among the places across this region. To the west, it borders the Nantes wine region. To the east, the Touraine vineyards of Chinon and Bourgueil carry on the reign of Cabernet Franc.

History of the Anjou-Saumur wine region

Viticulture in Anjou developed during the Middle Ages thanks to the abbeys and the counts of Anjou. In 1154, Henry II Plantagenet’s accession to the English throne opened the English market to Anjou wines. Cistercian monks had planted Coulée de Serrant as early as 1130, and Saumur subsequently became an active wine-trading center. Dutch merchants later established the reputation of Layon’s sweet wines. After phylloxera, the region rebuilt through its appellations. The Anjou AOC was recognized on November 14, 1936. Savennières followed in 1952, Quarts de Chaume in 1954, Saumur-Champigny and Rosé d’Anjou in 1957, then Cabernet d’Anjou in 1964. The hierarchy was further refined with Anjou Villages in 1991 and Anjou Villages Brissac in 1998 (now Anjou Brissac). Finally, in 2011, Quarts de Chaume became the Loire Valley’s first and only grand cru, alongside Coteaux du Layon Premier Cru Chaume.

What are the terroirs of the Anjou-Saumur wine region?

Anjou-Saumur’s terroirs are divided between two geological worlds, Anjou Noir and Anjou Blanc. To the west, Anjou Noir is part of the Armorican Massif. Its schist, sandstone and volcanic rocks such as rhyolite give Chenin Blanc density and minerality. To the east, Anjou Blanc and the Saumur area are part of the Paris Basin, with tuffeau, limestone and flinty clay. These soils lend lively acidity to whites and fine tannins to reds, while the soft rock has allowed many cave cellars to be dug. The oceanic climate, famed for Anjou’s mildness, limits extremes. In the Layon Valley, autumn mists encourage botrytis. Emblematic sites include the Chaume hillside, Bonnezeaux, Roche aux Moines, the Brézé hill and Les Poyeux.

Which grape varieties are permitted in Anjou-Saumur?

Chenin Blanc, known locally as pineau de la Loire, is Anjou-Saumur’s principal white grape. It is the only variety used for Layon dessert wines and in Savennières, and it makes up the great majority of white Anjou and Saumur wines, where Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc may play a supporting role. Its aromas evolve from citrus and green apple toward quince, honey and candied fruit. Cabernet Franc dominates the reds, making up at least 85% of Saumur-Champigny blends. It brings red fruit, violet and peppery notes. Cabernet Sauvignon lends structure to Anjou Villages, while Grolleau, Gamay and pineau d’Aunis are used in rosés and lighter reds.

What are the different styles of Anjou-Saumur wine?

This wine region produces wines of every color and level of sweetness. Dry whites from Anjou, Saumur and Savennières offer a taut, saline palate and are often aged in barrels or large oak casks. Dessert wines are made from botrytized grapes picked in successive passes, combining richness with sharp acidity. Reds range from lively Saumur-Champigny to more full-bodied Anjou Villages. Rosés emphasize appealing fruit, while Saumur brut and Crémant de Loire offer elegant bubbles. For food pairings, a Savennières elevates pike-perch in beurre blanc sauce. Saumur-Champigny goes with roast poultry or aged goat cheese, and Coteaux du Layon pairs with foie gras or pear tart.

What are the best Anjou-Saumur vintages?

The great Anjou-Saumur vintages of the past thirty years are 1996, 1997, 2005, 2010, 2018, 2020 and 2022. For older bottles, add the legendary pair of 1989 and 1990. The 1996 and 1997 vintages yielded outstanding dessert wines in two different styles. The 2005 vintage was successful for both reds and sweet wines. The warm, dry years of 2018, 2020 and 2022 produced ripe reds and generous whites. By contrast, several vintages demanded rigorous sorting: 2021, hit by April frosts, followed by 2023 and 2024, marked by downy mildew and rot. These lighter wines are best drunk young. Today, the reds from 2017 to 2020 are drinking well, while the great white cuvées and recent dessert wines benefit from more time.

What are the best estates in Anjou-Saumur?

Clos Rougeard, in Chacé, is the Loire’s cult estate. Brothers Charly and Nady Foucault, pioneers of organic farming, brought it to the top, and the Bouygues family (Château Montrose) bought it in 2017. Its Saumur-Champigny wines Le Clos, Les Poyeux and Le Bourg, as well as its white Brézé, are sold by allocation.

In Savennières, the Joly family’s Coulée de Serrant is a seven-hectare monopole, farmed biodynamically and granted its own appellation. The estate produces a dry Chenin Blanc with exceptional longevity.

Richard Leroy farms less than three hectares in Rablay-sur-Layon, in Anjou Noir. His Chenin Blancs Les Noëls de Montbenault and Clos des Rouliers, now labeled Vin de France, are among the country’s most sought-after wines.

Domaine Guiberteau, in Brézé, holds the Clos des Carmes monopole. Trained under Nady Foucault, Romain Guiberteau makes finely crafted white Saumurs, often compared with great Burgundies.

Thierry Germain’s Domaine des Roches Neuves, in Varrains, farms around thirty hectares biodynamically. Its Terres Chaudes and La Marginale cuvées—the latter produced only in great vintages—along with its white L'Insolite, rank among the Loire’s finest wines.

At Château Pierre-Bise, Claude Papin, a leading figure behind the Quarts de Chaume grand cru, makes benchmark dessert wines. Less widely known, Mathieu Vallée’s Château Yvonne in Parnay and Domaine du Collier, run by Charly’s son Antoine Foucault, perpetuate the Saumur tradition of precision.

How long can you keep an Anjou-Saumur wine?

An Anjou-Saumur wine may keep for two years in the case of a rosé or several decades for a great dessert wine. Rosés and fine sparkling wines are best drunk within two or three years. A classic Saumur-Champigny or red Anjou is best enjoyed after three to eight years, while single-vineyard wines can last ten to twenty years. Dry whites keep for five to ten years, and great Savennières wines for twenty years or more. Coteaux du Layon evolves over ten to thirty years, while Quarts de Chaume from great vintages often lasts more than half a century. Store your bottles on their sides at around 12 °C and 70% humidity. Before serving, decanting a young red for an hour softens it, and a young Savennières also benefits from aeration.
