History of Château Clerc Milon

The history of Château Clerc Milon begins in the late 18th century, when the estate was acquired by the Clerc family, who gradually developed it after the French Revolution. Located in the village of Milon, not far from Pauillac, the estate takes its name from its owner, Jean-Baptiste Clerc, and the place called Milon. In 1855, the quality of Château Clerc Milon’s wines was recognized when it was awarded the prestigious rank of Fifth Growth in the famous classification of Médoc and Sauternes wines.

After several decades of changing ownership and decline, the estate underwent a true renaissance in 1970, when it was purchased by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, an iconic figure in the wine world. Convinced of the exceptional potential of this terroir, the baron embarked on an extensive program to modernize and restructure the vineyard. His goal was to restore Château Clerc Milon’s former prestige and make it a leading name among Bordeaux’s Classified Growths.

After the Baron’s death in 1988, his daughter, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, took the reins of the estate. Under her leadership, the vineyard continued to develop, notably with the opening of a new vat room in 2007 and a barrel cellar in 2011. Since 2014, the Baroness’s children—Camille and Philippe Sereys de Rothschild and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild—have carried on the family legacy, guiding Château Clerc Milon with the same passion and determination.

Château Clerc Milon impressed Robert Parker with its 2019 vintage, which received a score of 95/100, highlighting its finesse and balance.

Terroirs and Vines of Château Clerc Milon

Château Clerc Milon’s vineyard extends across 41 hectares on the Left Bank, forming a cohesive holding located mostly on the Mousset rise, close to the prestigious First Growths Château Lafite-Rothschild and Château Mouton-Rothschild. This exceptional terroir has sandy gravel soils mixed with clay and limestone, providing ideal conditions for growing Bordeaux grape varieties.

The geological features of this terroir, combined with a south/southeast exposure, give the vines excellent sunlight while the nearby Gironde estuary protects them from extreme temperatures. This temperate microclimate encourages slow, even ripening of the grapes, producing balanced, powerful and complex wines.

The vineyard is planted mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Merlot (37%), Cabernet Franc (10%), Petit Verdot (2%) and Carmenère (1%). The last of these varieties was planted as early as 1947, making Château Clerc Milon one of the few Bordeaux estates with such an old plot of Carmenère. The vines are 53 years old on average, giving the wine unique aromatic depth and exceptional concentration.

Winemaking at Château Clerc Milon

Respect for the terroir and the pursuit of the highest quality are central to Château Clerc Milon’s winemaking. After meticulous hand-harvesting, the grapes are carefully sorted so that only the finest fruit is retained. The estate has invested in modern facilities, including a state-of-the-art vat room equipped with 40 temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, allowing each plot to be vinified separately and with great precision. This approach ensures that each lot of grapes is vinified in a way that brings out its full potential.

Château Clerc Milon’s wine is then aged for 14 to 18 months in French oak barrels, around 30% of which are new. This allows it to mature harmoniously, adding delicate oak notes that enhance its aromatic profile without overpowering it. The estate uses gravity-fed methods, limiting the use of pumps to preserve the quality of the grapes throughout winemaking. Malolactic fermentation takes place in tanks, giving the wine a rounder, silkier texture.

The Wines of Château Clerc Milon

Château Clerc Milon - Fine Wine

The fine wine of Château Clerc Milon is the ultimate expression of Pauillac’s terroir. This blend of five grape varieties reveals the full richness and complexity of the soils and climate that define the vineyard. Cabernet Sauvignon gives the wine structure and elegance, Merlot brings roundness and generosity, while Cabernet Franc adds subtle aromatic freshness. Petit Verdot, though present in a small proportion, contributes spicy notes that enhance the bouquet, while Carmenère, a rare variety, lends delicate aromas of faded rose and violet.

Vintage after vintage, Château Clerc Milon produces powerful, tannic, full-bodied wines with remarkable aging potential. They are fleshy on the palate, with silky tannins and impressive aromatic intensity. Lovers of great Pauillac wines will appreciate the long, smooth finish that rounds out each tasting.

Pastourelle de Clerc Milon - Second Wine

First produced in the 2009 vintage and released in 2015, Pastourelle de Clerc Milon is the estate’s second wine. Sourced from the same terroirs as the fine wine, its blend contains a higher proportion of Merlot, giving it a more approachable, fruit-forward profile. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc complete the blend, bringing structure and freshness to a wine with supple tannins and vibrant fruit.

Made with the same care as its older sibling, Pastourelle de Clerc Milon offers an excellent introduction to the world of Château Clerc Milon. Its suppleness and fruit appeal are matched by the elegance and character typical of Pauillac wines. This wine is ideal for drinking earlier, while also offering good aging potential.

Pauillac, one of the Médoc’s most prestigious appellations, is home to some of Bordeaux’s great wines, with remarkable vintages that have made history. Among the finest are 1975, 1982, 1985, 1986, 1989 and 1990, celebrated for their complexity and longevity. The 1995, 1996, 2000, 2003 and 2005 vintages also stand out for their richness and power. More recently, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 have confirmed Pauillac’s exceptional potential, producing wines that are both elegant and powerful, ideal for long-term cellaring.

The Fifth Classified Growths encompass a diverse range of properties in the Médoc, showcasing Bordeaux’s winemaking expertise. In Pauillac, renowned estates include Château d’Armailhac, Château Batailley, Château Clerc Milon, Château Croizet-Bages, Château Grand-Puy Ducasse, Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste, Château Haut-Bages Libéral, Château Haut-Batailley, Château Lynch-Bages, Château Lynch-Moussas, Château Pedesclaux and Château Pontet-Canet. In the Haut-Médoc, Château Camensac and Château Cantemerle stand out for their distinctive characteristics.
