The most renowned winegrower of Rasteau
Until 1996, Domaine Gourt de Mautens vinified its cuvées in a cooperative cellar. Jérôme Bressy revolutionized everything when he took over the estate, and created the conditions conducive to producing great wines of Rasteau appellation in all 3 colors, by creating his own vinification cellar. Comprising 13 hectares of vines, the vineyard is spread over different sectors of Rasteau divided into hillsides and terraces, on a terroir of clay-limestone marl. Jérôme Bressy was already practicing organic farming from the outset, and has now been in biodynamics since 2008.
It can be said that Domaine Gourt de Mautens wrote a new chapter in the Rasteau appellation by producing very rich wines, sometimes very demonstrative, but which served as models within their appellation, and it contributed to the revival of the Rasteau appellation. Starting from very ripe grapes with very low yields, its wines maintained a concentrated and imposing structure, thus seducing international critics and lovers of demonstrative wines. Their massive style has become more refined compared to the early 2000s. With an additional touch of elegance, the Rasteau wines from Gourt de Mautens could reach an even higher level. The main red grape varieties cultivated are: Grenache, Carignan, Mourvèdre and Syrah. In recent years, Jérôme Bressy has reintroduced old grape varieties from the Rhône Valley: Counoise, Vaccarèse, Terret, Cinsault, Picpoul and Picardan. Domaine Gourt de Mautens has no longer been classified under the Rasteau appellation since 2010 following a regulatory issue with the Rhône Wine Council, which refuses certain grape varieties in the Rasteau AOC; Jérôme Bressy therefore preferred to keep his grape varieties and be classified as IGP. 80% of the vines are between 50 and 95 years old and cultivated at very low yields of around 10 to 12 hL per hectare. A "haute-couture" vineyard, Domaine Gourt de Mautens is cultivated with great attention to detail in its production, from bottling to the choice of corks and bottles. The red Rhône wines from Gourt de Mautens undergo long aging periods of 30 to 35 months (since 2005, to soften the tannins) while the white Rhône wines are aged for 18 to 20 months in foudres, demi-muids and concrete vats. Taste the production of Domaine Gourt de Mautens, and you will realize that you have probably never tasted such wines.
