History of Fleurie:

The Fleurie appellation, located in the heart of Beaujolais, has a rich and ancient history. Its origins date back to Roman times, but it was during the Middle Ages that the vine truly flourished in the region. The name "Fleurie" evokes the beauty of the surrounding landscapes, marked by verdant hills and terraced vineyards. The development of Fleurie as a distinct Beaujolais cru was made official in 1936 with the granting of the appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC).

Terroirs and Vines of Fleurie:

Fleurie extends over approximately 800 hectares of gentle hills, characterized by pink granite soils that lend the wines a distinctive minerality. The terroir of Fleurie is unique, offering a combination of decomposed granite and volcanic rock. The vines, predominantly planted with the Gamay grape variety, thrive on south-facing slopes, benefiting from optimal sunshine.

Fleurie's winegrowers, aware of the importance of terroir, often practice environmentally respectful cultivation methods. Biodiversity is encouraged, and some estates adopt biodynamic approaches, thereby promoting soil diversity and micro-organisms.

The Profile of Fleurie Wines:

Fleurie wines stand out for their elegance, their finesse and their aging potential. Here are a few characteristics of the Fleurie wine profile:

Aromas and Flavors: Fleurie wines reveal delicate red fruit aromas such as cherry, strawberry and sometimes floral notes, giving an impression of finesse and femininity.

Tannic Structure: Although the tannins are generally smooth and silky, they contribute to the structure of the wines, allowing them to age with elegance. Young wines can be charming, while more mature ones develop additional complexity.

Freshness and Acidity: Fleurie often offers a lovely freshness on the palate thanks to a well-balanced acidity. This gives the wines a vibrancy that makes them particularly pleasant to enjoy, especially in their youth.

Balance: The balance between fruit, acidity and tannic structure is a key characteristic of Fleurie wines. This balance makes them versatile wines, suited for drinking both in their youth and after a few years of aging.

Food Pairings: Due to their elegant and aromatic profile, Fleurie wines pair well with a variety of dishes, including grilled meats, poultry, Mediterranean dishes and even certain cheeses.

In summary, Fleurie, as a Beaujolais cru, produces wines characterized by their delicacy, their balanced structure and their ability to evolve gracefully over time. These captivating wines reflect the harmonious marriage of a distinctive terroir and the expertise of the region's winemakers.
