History of Domaine Philippe Alliet

The history of Domaine Philippe Alliet dates back to 1978, when Philippe and his wife Claude took over the family estate located in Cravant-les-Coteaux, in the heart of the Chinon appellation. However, the Alliet family's viticultural heritage spans several generations, as it was at the beginning of the 20th century that Philippe's grandparents began cultivating vines in this region.

In 1985, Philippe Alliet officially took over from his father and uncle, with a clear ambition: to bring Chinon wines to a level of quality comparable to that of the great Bordeaux crus. A visionary, Philippe quickly undertook major changes, including introducing parcel-by-parcel winemaking and adopting a reasoned approach to vineyard management. He has been supported by his son Pierre since 2005, ensuring the continuity of the family's winemaking tradition.

The estate, which today spans 17 hectares, has established itself as one of the region's finest producers through a constant pursuit of excellence and innovation. The unique style of the Alliet wines, characterised by their depth, concentration and freshness, marked a turning point in the Chinon appellation in the 1990s.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Philippe Alliet

Domaine Philippe Alliet benefits from exceptional terroirs, spread across the communes of Chinon and Cravant-les-Coteaux. The estate's 17 hectares of vines are predominantly planted with Cabernet Franc, the king grape of the Chinon appellation, with a small one-hectare plot dedicated to Chenin Blanc, which is rare in this region.

The estate's most prestigious plots are located on clay-limestone hillsides, notably the famous Coteau de Noiré, with a full southern exposure offering ideal conditions for producing wines of great elegance and remarkable complexity. Other plots are situated on clay-silica soils, favouring the mineral expression of the wines.

Philippe Alliet and his family have chosen organic farming, permanently banning the use of herbicides and chemical fertilisers. Harvests are carried out by hand in order to pick grapes at optimal ripeness. Strict yield management, deliberately limited to 28 hl/ha, produces wines with concentrated aromas and a harmonious structure.

Winemaking at Domaine Philippe Alliet

The winemaking process at Domaine Philippe Alliet is meticulously orchestrated to respect the integrity of the fruit and to fully express the characteristics of each terroir. Particular attention is paid to every stage, from harvest to ageing, with the goal of producing wines of great purity and perfect balance.

The grapes, entirely destemmed, undergo a long fermentation that can last up to five weeks. During this period, gentle punch-downs are carried out to progressively extract aromas and tannins. The wines are then aged in a combination of barrels and concrete tanks, preserving the freshness of the fruit while adding complexity. Since 2010, Bordeaux barrels have been replaced by 500-litre barrels, with a reduced proportion of new oak (around 10% for certain cuvées), thus ensuring gentler and more precise ageing.

The estate's cellars, hewn into the tuffeau hills, offer ideal conditions for ageing the wines, with naturally regulated temperature. This allows the estate's wines to develop their structure and complexity while retaining beautiful freshness, the signature of Chinon wines.

The Cuvées of Domaine Philippe Alliet

Domaine Philippe Alliet produces a range of red wines made from 100% Cabernet Franc as well as a rare Chenin Blanc cuvée. Each cuvée reflects the richness of the estate's terroirs and the expertise of the Alliet family.

Chinon Tradition red: The estate's entry-level cuvée, from vines planted on gravelly and sandy soils. This wine offers a beautiful expression of Cabernet Franc with red fruit aromas and a supple texture. It is approachable young while also having good ageing potential.

Chinon Vieilles Vignes red: From vines aged 40 to 70 years, this cuvée is aged in concrete tanks. It stands out for its aromatic concentration, with notes of dark fruit and beautiful tannic complexity.

Chinon L'Huisserie red: This wine comes from young vines planted on clay-silica soils. Aged in 500-litre barrels (with 10% new oak), it displays intense red fruit aromas, an elegant structure and great finesse.

Chinon Coteau de Noiré red: An emblematic cuvée of the estate, the Coteau de Noiré comes from a clay-limestone terroir with a full southern exposure. Aged in demi-muids with 30% new oak, it offers an incredible concentration, a velvety texture and great ageing potential.

Chinon white: From the rare Chenin Blanc grape variety, this dry white wine is produced in very small quantities. It stands out for its aromatic richness, its tension and its minerality, making it a highly sought-after wine among lovers of Loire Valley whites.

Here are some interesting vintages to discover from the Chinon appellation: 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014…
