History of Château Pierre-Bise

The adventure of Château Pierre-Bise began in 1959 when Pierre Papin, then 50 years old, acquired this estate located in the Pays de la Loire. This vineyard, initially composed of 9 hectares, was passed on in 1974 to his son Claude, who undertook to expand it gradually. The 1980s marked a major turning point with the taking over of his father-in-law's vines in Rochefort, Chaume and Quarts-de-Chaume, thus consolidating his presence in the flagship appellations of the region.

In 1992, the acquisition of Clos de Coulaine added a new dimension to the estate, enriching its offering with the Savennières appellation. That same year, Claude Papin became a fervent defender of the Angevin terroir, working alongside figures such as Marcel Deiss to promote recognition of the great crus of the Loire. In 2011, his efforts bore fruit with the attainment of Grand Cru status for Quarts de Chaume and Premier Cru status for Coteaux du Layon.

Today, it is René Papin, son of Claude, who perpetuates this family passion. With 55 hectares of vineyards spread across Anjou, Savennières, Quarts-de-Chaume and Coteaux du Layon, Château Pierre-Bise continues to evolve while remaining true to its roots.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Château Pierre-Bise

The success of Château Pierre-Bise wines is based above all on the diversity and richness of its terroirs. The vines, planted on varied soils of schist, spilite (a volcanic rock) and Carboniferous sandstone, benefit from an ideal microclimate for the expression of chenin. These complex geological formations give each parcel a unique identity, which the Papins magnificently translate into bottle.

Since 1976, the estate has been committed to an environmentally respectful approach, inspired by the principles of trophobiosis developed by Francis Chaboussou. Generalized grass cover since 1990 promotes soil life and stimulates the minerality of the wines. At the same time, innovative practices such as agroforestry, winter animal mowing and spring predation of snails by chickens further enrich the local ecosystem.

The mild climate of the Pays de la Loire, marked by morning mists and a constant breeze, creates perfect conditions for the development of botrytis, also called "noble rot." This magical fungus transforms chenin into golden nectar, essential for the sweet wines of Coteaux du Layon.

Vinifications at Château Pierre-Bise

The vinification philosophy of Château Pierre-Bise is based on minimal intervention, allowing the wines to express themselves fully.

For white wines

The freshly harvested grapes are gently pressed using a Coquard pneumatic press, guaranteeing clear juices without excessive extraction. After one or two days of settling, fermentations begin thanks to indigenous yeasts, followed by malolactic fermentation for dry wines. Aging takes place in foudres, barrels or stoneware jars, depending on the cuvées, for one to two years.

For red wines

Red grapes are destemmed then slowly macerated for three to four weeks. Only a few light pump-overs are carried out to delicately extract the tannins. As with the whites, aging takes place mainly in wood, with particular attention paid to preserving the aromatic purity and structure of the wines.

No sugar, enzymes or external yeasts are added during the process. Sulfites are used sparingly, only during bottling. This respectful method highlights the typicity of the terroirs and offers authentic, balanced and expressive wines.

The Cuvées of Château Pierre-Bise

Dry White Wines

Savennières Clos de Coulaine: From a 9-hectare family vineyard, this wine combines aromatic vivacity and acidic attack on a foundation of sand and schist. Ideal to accompany fish and aged cheeses.

Savennières Clos le Grand Beaupréau: A complex cuvée, marked by unique geological diversity. The phthanite brings freshness and precision, while the sandstone reinforces the power.

Savennières Roche aux Moines: A mineral and dense wine, from a volcanic terroir. Its notes of citrus and gunflint make it an ideal companion for seafood dishes.

Anjou Les Rouannières: Originating from an arid and windy terroir, this wine expresses remarkable density and characteristic slowness to open.

Sweet Wines

Coteaux du Layon: Produced on soils rich in schist and quartz, these sweet wines develop intense aromas of honey, quince and candied citrus fruits. Their sugars are perfectly integrated, offering an exceptional balance between sweetness and acidity.

Quarts de Chaume: Recognized as the first grand cru of the Loire, this wine is a true treasure. Its aromatic complexity and length on the palate make it an ideal choice for fine desserts or simply for tasting.

Red Wines

Anjou Villages Schistes: Cultivated on drying clays, this red wine presents beautiful minerality and silky tannins. It wonderfully accompanies grilled meats and charcuterie.

Anjou Villages Les Rouannières Spilite: From a rare volcanic terroir, this dense and structured red wine reveals aromas of fresh red fruits, particularly black cherries and blackberries.

Anjou Villages Clos de Coulaine: This wine combines the freshness of sands and the depth of schists, offering a rich and balanced tasting experience.

The Loire Valley is brimming with other exceptional estates to discover. Talented winemakers such as Clau de Nell, Domaine aux Moines, Domaine du 7, Eric Morgat, Ferme de la Sansonnière, Juchepie, Nicolas Joly, Pierre Bise, Yannick Amirault, Richard Leroy, or Stéphane Bernaudeau also produce remarkable wines in Savennières and Anjou. These estates offer a diversity of styles and expressions of terroir, allowing wine enthusiasts to explore the richness and complexity of wines from this fascinating region.

Château Pierre-Bise embodies the viticultural excellence of the Pays de la Loire. Thanks to respectful terroir management, meticulous vinification and a range of varied cuvées, this family estate continues to captivate enthusiasts and experts from around the world. Whether you are seeking a mineral dry white wine, a complex sweet wine or an elegant red, Château Pierre-Bise will meet your expectations.
