Wines from Domaine Clau de Nell: buy at the best price

Clau de Nell is located in the commune of Tuffalun, approximately 15 km west of Saumur. It comprises a 10-hectare single-block vineyard, where every effort is made to bring out the best of what the native Loire grape varieties can produce, such as Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as Chenin and Grolleau. In 2008, Clau de Nell was acquired by Anne-Claude Leflaive and Christian Jacques, and Sylvain Potin became the estate manager the following year.

Anne-Claude Leflaive, who passed away in 2015, was a leading figure in biodynamic viticulture in Burgundy, and she put her renowned methods to work in the service of quality at Clau de Nell. Definition and respect for terroir are the guiding principles at Clau de Nell, where the soils are composed of sandstone, flint, silty clays, and limestone. The winemaking favours gentle extractions for the Loire reds, akin to "infusions," with the ultimate goal of gently diffusing a highly sensual and velvety tannic structure into the juice. The wines are aged in barrels sourced from Domaine Leflaive. Yields are deliberately very low, and the volume of wine produced here is small, resulting in a scarcity effect due to the constrained surface area of the Clau de Nell estate. All work is carried out using 100% biodynamic practices, following the rhythm of the lunar calendar. The range includes several cuvées offered to enthusiasts, such as the "Violette" cuvée, made from a blend of cabernet franc aged over 40 years and cabernet sauvignon aged 60 years, grown on clay-silt soils over tuffeau limestone. Half of the wine is aged in Burgundian barrels for 12 to 18 months, while the other half is aged on fine lees. With a precise nose of dark fruits, liquorice, and gentle spices, and a palate showing fine structure and additional density compared to the classic cabernet franc cuvée, a chalky freshness characterises the style of "Violette," always refined in touch, yet with firmer tannins. The finish is long, and the wine is expected to keep well for 8 to 10 years.
The 2015 vintage offers an extra layer of indulgence and sweetness on the mid-palate. The "Cabernet Franc" cuvée is sourced from vines over 40 years old, grown on clay-silt soils over tuffeau limestone. This Clau de Nell cuvée offers an open and complex bouquet, with a slightly reductive and animal note at first, evolving towards very fresh small red fruits, flowers and spices, pepper, and a noble vegetal character of great freshness. The palate is upright with an extremely elegant touch, featuring crunchy tannins and a superb chalky length. The nose of the "Grolleau" cuvée is delightfully crunchy, with blueberry jam notes and a seductive peppery hint. Great vigour on the palate, with a finish of superb fruity momentum and a thirst-quenching character. Finally, the "Les Fontenelles" cuvée is 100% Chenin on stony limestone soils. The juice benefits from 24 months of aging on fine lees in Burgundian barrels of several wines. The nose is impressively mineral, with tension on the palate — nervous and powerful — making this wine a great, thoroughbred Chenin with complex persistence and a finish of noble bitterness. The entire Clau de Nell range is sure to delight lovers of great Anjou wines.
