Alexandre Bain wines: very great wines in biodynamics at Pouilly Fumé, in the Loire.
The Alexandre BAIN estate is located in Tracy sur Loire (58), close to Sancerre, and it was founded in 2007 starting from a 5-hectare vineyard. Now at 11 hectares, the founder of the Alexandre Bain estate gained significant media attention during his fierce battle against the INAO, which had withdrawn in 2014 his right to the Pouilly Fumé appellation, deeming his wines non-compliant with AOC standards.
After winning his appeal before the competent courts in 2017, everything returned to order and Alexandre Bain regained his authorisation to label his wines under the AOC Pouilly Fumé (and no longer as Vin de France). In order to move beyond the technical framework of the debate: "wine that deserves its appellation or not", we will say that Alexandre Bain produces, with the greatest passion, authentic white Loire wines, reflections of their vintage and their terroir. A devotee of biodynamic farming, Alexandre Bain harvests ripe Sauvignons, barrel-aged with very little sulphiting. Neither yeasted, nor chaptalised, nor filtered, his wines claim to be natural and are golden, generous, sometimes more accomplished on the palate than on the nose, and can appear quite distant from the appellation's standards. By championing the terroir, Alexandre Bain moves away from the varietal markers that the region seems to favour (the famous notes of boxwood, blackcurrant leaf, or juniper berries). The wines of Domaine Alexandre BAIN are more characterised by tangy notes that sometimes tend towards aromas of exotic and spiced fruits (curry), with a fleshy and shimmering ripeness, anchored by a masterfully calibrated ageing process. The cuvée from Domaine Alexandre Bain "Mademoiselle M" is a 100% Sauvignon cuvée, sourced from Kimmeridgian limestone soils (marl with small oysters, as found in Chablis in Burgundy), a richer and more structured terroir. This cuvée contains no added sulphites and is aged in large oak casks for 18 months. Here one discovers a wine with fruity aromas (citrus fruits, white fruits, exotic fruits) and mineral notes. On the palate, the balance is perfect, without offering the exuberance of the nose, but with great finesse, a chiselled minerality, breadth and freshness, with a finish on bitter notes and a significant length. The cuvée from Domaine Alexandre Bain "Pierre Précieuse" was crafted in the most natural way possible, with fermentation triggered by indigenous yeasts and the minimum amount of sulphur. The wine surprises with a divine balance between crystalline purity and fully ripe flavours, tension and aromatic complexity. Superb, well worth discovering if you have not yet done so, as it features on the tables of more than 20 Michelin-starred restaurants. It is sometimes said that the AOC Pouilly-Fumé lacks star winemakers to shine on the international stage as the AOC Sancerre does. The wines of Alexandre Bain are of the highest calibre, and it is up to you to discover them, for they are authentic, precious and rare on the market. Simply take the precaution of aerating them well before tasting.
