Wine 2008 Bourgogne

The 2008 vintage in Burgundy was a cool, late and classic year, saved at the last moment by a north wind (the bise) which, in September, dried out vineyards that had been battered by humidity and disease. The style retains a great tension. The whites (Chardonnay) rank among the most convincing: upright, lively and mineral, with fine acidity and superb poise, from Chablis to Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet. The reds (Pinot Noir), more uneven, seduce with their freshness and classicism when well made, with lovely expressions in the Côte de Nuits. The ageing potential is real, particularly for whites built to mature. Fresher and more nervy than the opulent 2009 and the approachable 2007 that flank it, the 2008 today offers very fine bottles, its best whites being at full maturity.
