History of Domaine Alexandra Couvreur

Founded in the 1980s by Michel Couvreur, Domaine Alexandra Couvreur has its origins in a pioneering vision: to produce exceptional wines and spirits with minimal intervention. Michel, inspired by his friendship with Marcel Lapierre, one of the forerunners of natural wine, began with a unique aligoté, cultivated without pesticides, sulphur or added yeasts. Fascinated by distillation after a trip to Scotland, he also created a whisky distillery in Bouze-lès-Beaune, which became the estate's main activity. The wine-growing project, named in honour of his daughter Alexandra, remained a family passion, carried on today by Alexandra and her son Aymeric. The latter, guided by Jean-Arnaud Frantzen, Michel's first employee, perpetuates this heritage while infusing it with a modern vision. Together, they maintain the authenticity and excellence that have made the estate's reputation, both in winemaking and in whisky production.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Alexandra Couvreur

Domaine Alexandra Couvreur flourishes on a unique plot of 6 ouvrées located in the Hautes Côtes de Beaune, dedicated exclusively to the aligoté grape variety, a Burgundian treasure once overlooked. This exceptional terroir, cultivated with a deep respect for the environment, benefits from an artisanal approach that excludes the use of tractors to avoid soil compaction. Yields are rigorously controlled, ranging between 10 and 15 hectolitres per hectare, in order to guarantee grapes of optimal quality. Alexandra Couvreur limits treatments to the strict minimum, using only sulphur and copper, with just two interventions during the previous year. This philosophy of natural viticulture, rooted in respect for the terroir, makes it possible to produce a vibrant aligoté, an authentic reflection of its Burgundian environment.

Winemaking at Domaine Alexandra Couvreur

Winemaking at Domaine Alexandra Couvreur is a model of craftsmanship and purity. True to its philosophy of non-intervention, the estate bans all additives, including sulphites, to preserve the essence of the grape. The harvest is carried out under anaerobic conditions, protected from oxygen by carbon dioxide, and each transfer is performed by gravity to maintain the integrity of the wine. The grapes are vinified without chaptalization, fining, refrigeration or filtration, and aged for at least 23 months in old, neutral Burgundian barrels. This meticulous approach, inherited from Michel Couvreur and perfected by Alexandra and Aymeric, gives rise to an aligoté of remarkable tension, at once fresh, energetic and endowed with great ageing potential. Each step of the process reflects a deep commitment to authenticity and quality.

The Cuvées of Domaine Alexandra Couvreur

Domaine Alexandra Couvreur produces a single, emblematic cuvée: an exceptional Bourgogne Aligoté, recognised for its rarity and quality. Until 2021, the estate produced only one barrel per year, approximately 300 bottles, from its 6-ouvrée plot in the Hautes Côtes de Beaune. Since 2022, an additional plot rented in the same region has made it possible to increase production to two barrels, approximately 900 bottles per year. This wine, crafted without sulphur, pesticides or added yeasts, stands out for its vivacity, its tension on the palate and its brilliant freshness. Aged for 23 months on lees in Burgundian barrels, it offers rare complexity and exceptional ageing potential, making each bottle a work of art to be savoured. This cuvée embodies the essence of Burgundian terroir and the estate's commitment to natural viticulture.

Through its Bourgogne Aligoté, produced in limited quantities, the estate offers natural wine enthusiasts a unique tasting experience, marked by purity and authenticity. Alexandra, Aymeric and Jean-Arnaud combine their talents to perpetuate Michel Couvreur's vision while innovating for the future. For those passionate about exceptional wines and Burgundian terroir, purchasing wines from Domaine Alexandra Couvreur is a rare opportunity to discover an aligoté of unmatched quality.
