Established in Chorey-les-Beaune since 2016, Domaine Petit Roy is the work of Seiichi Saito (also known as Seiichi Wang), a winemaker of Sino-Japanese origin who has become one of Burgundy's rising stars. From a vineyard of approximately 2.1 hectares farmed biodynamically, complemented by carefully selected grape purchases from producers sharing the same values, Petit Roy crafts a range of white and red wines from a variety of appellations: Bourgogne, Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses, Saint-Romain, Maranges and many more.

The TOP winemakers of Burgundy

...the Petit Roy estate has come a long way and despite the small size of its vineyards (2.1 ha), Seiichi Saito happily multiplies the cuvées: Bourgogne Aligoté, Bourgogne Rouge, Côte de Nuits Villages, Hautes Côtes de Beaune Rouge and Blanc, Maranges Rouge and Blanc, Monthélie 1^er Cru, and Savigny-lès-Beaune. A new and interesting cuvée made from the Altesse grape variety (as a Vin de France) has recently been produced. The entire vineyard is farmed using biodynamic methods, and all the red wines are harvested as whole bunches, in order to preserve a beautiful concentration and bring forth lovely, highly precise tannins. As for the white Bourgogne wines, the Petit Roy estate has chosen to moderate barrel aging in order to bring out the full expression of its terroir. At Domaine Petit Roy, no new oak is used during aging so as to avoid over-marking the wines, but only small doses of sulfur, thus preventing any aromatic deviation. The wines display a beautiful density, a remarkable balance, and a very pleasant mouthfeel. The cuvée l'Orme is a very fine introduction to discovering the style of Domaine Petit Roy. It is a wine that is both pleasurable and richly textured, juicy, fresh and of great finesse, even though it is a simple Appellation Bourgogne, yet far more worthy of an AOC Chorey-lès-Beaune. The "generic" Bourgogne cuvée from Domaine Petit Roy is a true little gem of fruit, so delightfully indulgent; on the nose, the wine reveals notes of raspberry, sour cherry, cranberry juice, and a very slight earthy edge. Aging in old barrels provides a beautiful oxygenation to the wine and results in a Bourgogne that is perfectly accessible from the moment it is opened. The palate is every bit as superb as the nose, with that same very appealing quality of tart fruit notes, but also a certain firmness that reinforces the length on the palate. With the 2018 vintage wines, the vines held up well against the intense heat as the spring had allowed water reserves to build up. One can therefore find in them the qualities of intense fruit from 2015 and the extreme ripeness of 2003, along with the juicy character that is the hallmark of the 2018 vintage. The 2019 vintage, for its part, is more strongly contrasted. It was very hot and dry, but the wines display freshness and good acidity, as well as an indulgent quality that will win over lovers of Bourgogne wines. Petit Roy, a future estate of consequence has just been born, and one should take the opportunity to discover its wines before its fame contributes to exhausting the supply, as the production of Domaine Petit Roy wines is very limited.
