Arthur Gras is the new face of the Gras family estate, established in Saint-Romain for five generations. Son of Alain Gras, an essential reference in the Saint-Romain appellation, Arthur launched his own label alongside the family domaine, with a small négociant activity purchasing grapes from renowned appellations on the Côte de Beaune (Auxey-Duresses, Monthélie, Pommard 1er Cru, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru, Côte de Beaune). Reasoned viticulture, manual harvesting, respectful winemaking and measured ageing in barrels: Arthur Gras wines stand out for their freshness, precision and elegance.
The story of the Arthur Gras house is rooted in five generations of winemakers in Saint-Romain, a village perched between Meursault and Pommard, at the foot of imposing limestone cliffs. In 1979, Alain Gras took over the family estate and raised the small Saint-Romain vineyard (around one hundred hectares in total) to the rank of one of the most sought-after appellations in the Côte de Beaune, even appearing on the wine lists of 21 three-Michelin-starred restaurants. Over the decades, the estate grew to reach around fifteen hectares, spread between Saint-Romain, Auxey-Duresses and Meursault.
In 2020, Arthur Gras, son of Alain and Nathalie, officially joined the family estate and began an increasingly precise parcel-by-parcel approach. Alongside his role at the family estate, Arthur wished to create his own signature, named Arthur Gras, through a discreet négociant activity sourcing selected grapes from neighbouring appellations in the Côte de Beaune. This approach, both respectful of his father's heritage and forward-looking, allows him to explore new terroirs (Auxey-Duresses, Monthélie, Pommard, Savigny-lès-Beaune) and to assert a personal identity, marked by precision, freshness and drinkability.
Arthur Gras draws his grapes from a range of prestigious terroirs in the Côte de Beaune, all characterised by the clay-limestone soils typical of the region. In Auxey-Duresses, the Les Hautés plot (57.71 ares) benefits from a privileged east-facing exposure on the heights of the slope, at the entrance to the valley. In Monthélie, the grapes come from 50-year-old vines planted on the lieux-dits Combe d'Anay and Les Rivaux, south and south-east facing on gravelly limestone soils covered with red clay and marl.
In Pommard, Arthur Gras has access to one of the finest climats of the appellation, the Clos de Verger, classified as Premier Cru. In Savigny-lès-Beaune, it is the Premier Cru Les Vergelesses that contributes its mineral and floral signature. Conscious of environmental issues, Arthur applies reasoned viticulture, without pesticides or herbicides, with mechanical soil cultivation. Harvesting is exclusively manual, with rigorous sorting of the bunches to select only the ripest and healthiest berries. The altitude and freshness of the Burgundian limestones, combined with precise parcel selection, give rise to wines that marry aromatic maturity and tension, elegance and depth.
In the cellar, Arthur Gras applies vinification methods faithful to the Burgundian tradition, respectful of the grape and the fruit. For the reds, manual harvesting is followed by vinification with partially whole clusters (approximately 20% whole grapes depending on the cuvée), with a vatting period of around ten days punctuated by measured pump-overs and punch-downs. Pressing is carried out using a pneumatic press, with the utmost gentleness, in order to preserve the aromatic finesse of the Pinot Noir.
For the whites, after manual harvesting and pneumatic pressing, alcoholic and malolactic fermentations take place in oak barrels under temperature control, with a measured use of new wood (30% maximum for Village wines). Ageing, whether for whites or reds, lasts approximately twelve months, in oak barrels and stainless steel vats, in a constant pursuit of balance between the body and freshness. Arthur Gras takes care to limit interventions, allowing the wines to evolve naturally, so that each cuvée faithfully reflects its terroir of origin.
