An estate producing harmonious wines

Domaine Jean Jacques Confuron wines: buy at the best price

Domaine Jean Jacques Confuron is located a few kilometers south of Nuits Saint Georges in Burgundy, in the village of Prémeaux Prissey. Domaine Confuron was taken over in 1988 by Jean Jacques Confuron’s daughter, Sophie Confuron, and her husband, Alain Meunier. Working eight and a half hectares of vines on clay-limestone soils, the two winemakers set exacting standards, aiming simply to grow the best grapes possible. To avoid compacting the soil, they have plowed their vineyards by horse since 2003. Overall, the estate’s red wines leave a lasting impression with their sensuality and aromatic complexity, born of meticulous, environmentally conscious viticulture.

History of Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron

It all began in 1926 with the marriage of Jean Confuron, from Vosne-Romanée, and Anne-Marie Bouchard, a native of Prémeaux. Each brought vines inherited from their family, and the young couple settled in Prémeaux. They gradually acquired more plots and began selling their own bottled wine in the early 1930s, a pioneering move when the vast majority of Burgundy’s production was sold in bulk to négociants. After Jean’s death in 1965, his two sons, Christian and Jean-Jacques, worked together until 1980, when Jean-Jacques founded his own estate.

The family’s fortunes changed quickly: Jean-Jacques Confuron fell ill and died in January 1983, leaving his wife, Andrée Noëllat, and their daughter, Sophie, in charge of a sleeping giant with superbly situated plots but aging cellars and a large share of its production sold to négociants. Sophie met Alain Meunier at the Beaune wine school, and they began working together with the 1985 harvest. They married in 1988 and took the reins in earnest, making estate bottling the norm. That same year, Andrée received a hectare of vines from the estate of her grandfather Charles Noëllat, including the key plots in Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Boudots, and Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts. In 1989, the couple built new cellars and sharply reduced yields. That year, Alain Meunier also attended a lecture by agronomist Claude Bourguignon on the biological decline of Burgundy’s soils. The impact was so profound that he converted the entire estate to organic farming, a change fully in effect by 1991 that made him one of the region’s pioneers. Today, their son Louis Meunier is gradually taking over, not by overhauling the style but by refining the details, particularly by reducing sulfur use.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron

The vineyards stretch from Corgoloin, at the southernmost end of the Côte de Nuits, to Chambolle-Musigny, with a concentration of plots around Prémeaux-Prissey and Nuits-Saint-Georges. The limestone-clay soils, sometimes shallow and stony, sometimes deeper, have regained their vitality through thirty years of organic farming, organic fertilizers, and careful attention to microbial life. Louis Meunier readily acknowledges that the estate’s finest terroirs come from the Noëllat side of the family, beginning with the Romanée-Saint-Vivant block, planted in the mid-1920s.

The age of the vines is a major asset. The village appellations draw on vines twenty to thirty-five years old; the two Nuits-Saint-Georges premiers crus on vines around forty-five years old; and the Chambolle and Vosne premiers crus on vines approaching fifty. The Clos Vougeot vines were planted in 1965. Some Chambolle-Musigny plots are approaching eighty years of age, while Les Chaboeufs comes from vines planted in 1957, partly replanted using massal selection in 2011. Yields are deliberately kept between thirty and forty hectoliters per hectare, depending on the wine, well below permitted maximums. All grapes are harvested by hand and rigorously sorted both in the vineyard and at the winery.

Winemaking at Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron

The estate’s signature technique is cold pre-fermentation maceration. The grapes are sorted and destemmed but not crushed, then macerated for four to six days at low temperature in closed tanks. This extracts color and supple, velvety tannins while preserving aromatic freshness. Gradual warming then starts fermentation, which continues for around twelve days at about 30°C, with three punch-downs a day. Extraction is firm but measured, favoring punch-downs over pump-overs.

The wine is then run into barrels for malolactic fermentation and aging, which lasts fifteen to eighteen months. The proportion of new oak was historically high, reaching up to 100% for the grands crus and 70% for the premiers crus; it has been substantially reduced in recent years to allow the terroir to show more clearly. Racking is kept to an absolute minimum, and the wines are bottled without fining or filtration. The result is an immediately recognizable style: deeply colored, concentrated wines that retain fresh acidity and fine elegance, somewhat reserved in their youth before developing a velvety texture and floral bouquet with age.

The Wines of Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron

The Bourgogne Aligoté opens the range with a lively, focused white showing notes of citrus, white flowers, and flint, made with the same care as the higher-ranked wines. A perfect bottle for an aperitif or with seafood.

The Bourgogne Pinot Noir Cuvée Jeunesse is Louis Meunier’s creation and was his first calling card at the estate. This vibrant, fragrant Pinot Noir, with notes of cherry and raspberry, offers supple tannins and remarkable drinkability. It is the ideal introduction to the estate’s wines at a very accessible price.

The Coteaux de l'Auxois Clos de la Romanée is the estate’s outlier, from a small plot planted in Flavigny-sur-Ozerain, far from the Côte. The estate grows Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay there, producing fresh, easy-drinking, distinctive wines that reflect a spirit of viticultural exploration.

The Côte de Nuits-Villages Les Vignottes comes from a plot of more than one hectare in Prémeaux-Prissey, planted in the 1980s. Today, it is the estate’s most consistent and accomplished wine from this appellation: structured and dense, with black fruit and a firm mineral backbone, it offers one of the best values in the Côte de Nuits.

The Côte de Nuits-Villages La Montagne rouge comes from recently replanted vines in the commune of Corgoloin. Fresh and lithe, it offers vibrant red fruit and a saline finish.

The Côte de Nuits-Villages La Montagne blanc is the only white wine the estate produces in the Côte de Nuits. From vines planted in 2007, it is a focused, mineral Chardonnay with notes of citrus and fresh almond and a fine sense of tension.

The Côte de Nuits-Villages Au Leurey comes from a tiny plot recently taken over by the estate and now being revitalized. Made in small quantities, it is a supple, fruity Pinot Noir with more immediate appeal.

The Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Fleurières comes from more than a hectare of vines planted in the 1970s. A well-crafted village-level Nuits, it combines tension, tannic structure, and precise black fruit, with the house’s characteristic youthful reserve that softens after a few years in the cellar.

The village-level Chambolle-Musigny blends three lieux-dits: Les Condemennes accounts for half, with Pas de Chat and Derrière le Four contributing a quarter each. The vines were planted in the 1960s, though some are approaching eighty years of age. The wine has Chambolle’s delicacy: floral notes, an airy texture, caressing tannins, and an exceptionally fine finish.

The Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Chaboeufs is one of the estate’s most expressive wines, from vines planted in 1957 and partly replanted using massal selection in 2011. The house style works beautifully here: depth of fruit, ideal acidity, aromas of black fruit and spice, and considerable aging potential. An essential reference point.

The Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots, inherited from the Noëllat side of the family, lies on the border with Vosne-Romanée and shares its sensuality. From vines planted in the 1950s, it offers a rich black-fruit nose and a palate as broad as it is long, combining tension with voluptuousness. Not to be missed.

The Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru blends two climats, Les Chatelots and Les Feusselottes, with one-third of the vines planted in the 1940s and the rest in the 1960s. It combines the village’s aromatic finesse with added depth, silky tannins, and a long, fragrant finish.

The Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts comes from a plot planted in 1945, one of the estate’s finest. Beneath its deep, ripe-cherry color, it offers a bouquet of black fruit with smoky, toasted notes, a rich, rounded palate, and a smooth, long finish. A great Vosne to decant or cellar.

The Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, from a half-hectare plot planted in 1965, impresses with its structure and depth. The spicy nose shows fine aromatic complexity, while the palate is full, dense, and remarkably long. A grand cru that can be cellared for twenty to thirty years.

The Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru is the estate’s crown jewel: half a hectare of vines planted in the mid-1920s, inherited from Domaine Charles Noëllat. Its depth of fruit is extraordinary, with a velvety texture, floral and spicy complexity, profound minerality, and a breathtakingly long finish. Produced in tiny quantities, it is one of Vosne-Romanée’s most sought-after grands crus.
