Champagne Veuve Clicquot: a very great house with an immense reputation
The Champagne house VEUVE CLICQUOT is certainly the best known of all champagne brands and it was created by François CLIQUOT in 1772. The Veuve Clicquot house owes its name to Nicole Clicquot who succeeded her husband François Clicquot who died in 1805. Nicknamed "la Veuve Clicquot" or "la Grande Dame de la Champagne"...
...endowed with a remarkable strength of character, she knew how to run her business successfully and had the intelligence to acquire vineyards among the finest Crus, in Bouzy, Verzy and Verzenay in the Montagne de Reims, thus gradually building up the exceptional estate of the Veuve Clicquot house with 286 hectares of vines. She also conceived the famous yellow label which, throughout the world, allows one to recognise a bottle of Champagne Veuve Clicquot at a glance. Acquired by the LVMH group in 1987, the Veuve Clicquot brand offers a fairly focused range of cuvées, all crafted around a majority of Pinot Noir. The best-known cuvée is the Carte Jaune Champagne by Veuve Clicquot, a non-vintage Brut from the Veuve Clicquot house, a fresh and very lightly vinous cuvée whose dominance of Pinot Noir ensures the typical structure of Veuve Clicquot wines, while a light touch of Pinot Meunier rounds out the blend. Chardonnay lends it the elegance and finesse necessary for the right balance of a cuvée drawn from a blend of approximately 50 to 60 different crus. Traditionally, this cuvée is composed of 50 to 55% Pinot Noir, 15 to 20% Pinot Meunier and 28 to 33% Chardonnay. 30 to 40% reserve wines, the oldest of which are up to 9 years old, ensure the consistency of the Veuve Clicquot style. The nose is powerful, initially fruity (white fruits, dried fruits), then vanilla and brioche. On the palate, the attack is frank and dynamic, then gives way to a fruity harmony. The wine displays a certain structure, which places it in the family of structured and vinous Bruts, offering a fine balance between finesse and power. There is also a range of vintage Champagnes, with a blanc Champagne and a rosé Champagne. At the top of the Veuve Clicquot Champagne range sits "La Grande Dame", a prestige Champagne paying tribute to the woman who developed and gave the true impetus to the house. The "La Grande Dame" Veuve Clicquot cuvée was created in 1962 and first marketed in 1972 to celebrate the bicentenary of the Veuve Clicquot house. This Champagne cuvée is crafted from a blend of 6 historic Grand Crus of the House: Aÿ, Ambonnay, Bouzy, Verzy, Verzenay for the Pinot Noir and Le-Mesnil-sur-Oger for the Chardonnay. Pinot Noir predominates at 90% in the blend, magnified by 10% Chardonnay. On the nose, the initial notes of white flowers such as jasmine, honeysuckle and vine flowers make themselves felt before opening up to more fruity nuances of apple, pear and peach. A few notes of fresh almond and frangipane complete the bouquet. On the palate, La Grande Dame by Veuve Clicquot reveals more complex aromas of dried apricot, hazelnut, honey and candy sugar. The silky textures lend the wine its personality, elegance and character. The maturation has allowed the wine to acquire depth and power. The Veuve Clicquot style will appeal to the widest audience and the wines in the range are all highly recommended.
