Vintage 1976

The year of the heat wave in France, a hot wind (the sirocco) dried out the grapes in Bordeaux in early September, and 1976 was the vintage with the earliest harvest since 1945 (beginning on 13/09 in Bordeaux), but in the rain (from 11 to 15/09). The atypical profile of the 1976 vintage led to greater success in the north of the Médoc (Saint Julien, Pauillac, Saint Estèphe) and a weaker vintage in the south (Margaux, Graves). Good vintage in Pomerol and Saint Emilion, and very good 1976 vintage in Sauternes. Very good quality in red Burgundy (note that young vines suffered) and the white Burgundy wines are drier and harder due to the overripeness of the grapes. The best red Burgundies can still be approached.

Our Advice for Buying a 1976 Wine

Beautiful 1976 Vintage in Champagne (large and very ripe harvest). Great year for red wines from the Loire Valley (Chinon, Sancerre).

Selecting a wine from the 1976 vintage? Favor the northern Médoc sector (Pauillac, St Estèphe, St Julien) e.g. Château Montrose, Château Cos d'Estournel, Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Pichon Comtesse, Château Branaire Ducru, Château Ducru Beaucaillou, Château Léoville Las Cases, Château Talbot…). Very good Sauternes (Château Climens, Château Coutet, Château de Fargues, Château Guiraud, Château Rieussec, Château Suduiraut and Château d'Yquem). Red Burgundy wines from old vines are suitable for long aging and should be favored. Red Sancerre is excellent from Lucien Crochet. Alsace wines are exceptionally rich in sugar in 1976, and many deliver on their promises.
