Marjorie Gallet had first gained experience at Gérard Gauby in 2000, but Stéphane Gallet preferred to hold the position of technical director at Mas Amiel until 2008, before joining the Roc des Anges estate full time. The Roc des Anges estate began with 10 hectares of vines, but now extends over no fewer than 40 hectares of vineyard, including 30 hectares of Languedoc rouge. Time reveals and refines the personality of their terroirs, and allows the Roc des Anges estate to multiply its single-parcel cuvées, while obtaining Biodynamic certification as early as 2010. Their celebrated Carignan 1903 cuvée helped establish the reputation of the Roc des Anges estate, but the rise of Roc des Anges did not happen overnight. Today, their exceptionally comprehensive range of wines graces the finest Michelin-starred tables, and nearly half of Paris's 3-star restaurants feature them on their wine lists. The Roc des Anges Iglesia Vella cuvée, derived from old grey grenache vines planted in 1954, is very pure and of impressive energy, with notes of spice and lavender, and a straight, saline finish. The Languedoc blanc cuvée Roc des Anges Llum is broad and expressive, of great purity of expression with floral notes, white fruits, spices and aromatic herbs. Its length on the palate is remarkable. The red cuvée Roc des Anges Segna de Cor is derived from a blend of young carignan, grenache and syrah vines, and this red wine remains the most accessible cuvée of the Roc des Anges estate in its youth. Its frankness of expression and its fruitiness are dazzling, making it an excellent companion for sauced dishes or barbecue grills. The red cuvée Roc des Anges Reliefs is a blend of very old carignans planted on schist between 1911 and 1944; full of fine energy, accessible, deep and of great length, it is a wine for ageing that will improve effortlessly over a decade. The famous Roc des Anges Carignan 1903 cuvée, aged in large oak casks and whose vines were planted in 1903 nearly 120 years ago, is a silky and expressive wine with a well-seasoned southern character, whose ageing potential is assured over 15 years. The texture on the palate is exemplary, and the wine offers an explosive fruitiness. It is velvety, juicy and saline, while retaining an almost thirst-quenching freshness on its finish. The wines of the Roc des Anges estate offer a truly distinctive stylistic identity, to be discovered without delay by the uninitiated.
