The History of Roc des Anges

The story began in 2001, when Marjorie Gallet, then twenty-three, decided to establish herself in Montner, in the Agly Valley. Born near Grenoble and shaped by the wine-growing landscapes of Condrieu and Côte-Rôtie, she studied agronomy and enology in Montpellier, then learned from leading winegrowers, including Gérard Gauby, who passed on a philosophy of wine more than a technique. The estate’s name comes from a plot of old Carignan vines planted on a quartz seam, the "white rock"—a pale hillside that glitters amid the dark schist.

Her husband, Stéphane Gallet, who spent many years overseeing winemaking at Mas Amiel in Maury, joined her in 2008. The estate then entered a new phase: conversion to organic farming (certified in 2010), followed by biodynamics (certified in 2013); the acquisition of vines in Maury to create Les Terres de Fagayra, a winery dedicated to naturally sweet wines; and a move in 2014 from Montner to Latour-de-France, into a stone winery with the thermal stability and space needed for meticulous winemaking. Since then, the couple has created an increasing number of single-plot wines.

The Terroirs and Vines of Roc des Anges

The estate’s terroir is based on very old, friable black schist, layered vertically, allowing roots to reach deep for water and coolness in the height of summer. Alongside the schist are quartz seams, pockets of red clay, limestone-and-schist soils around Maury and, on one high-altitude plot, granite. The vineyard is spread across around twenty plots, most of them north-facing—a crucial choice in such a sun-drenched region: Roussillon’s light ripens the grapes without scorching them.

The age of the vines is another of the estate’s great assets. Some Carignan plots were planted in 1903 and 1913, on their own roots or as bush vines, and the average vine age is well over half a century. Natural yields are extremely low, often below 20 hectoliters per hectare. The plantings favor Catalan and Mediterranean varieties, some of them nearly forgotten: Carignan Noir and Carignan Gris; Grenache Noir, Gris and Blanc; Macabeu; Mourvèdre; Muscat à Petits Grains; Lladoner Pelut; Picpoul; Cinsault; and a massal selection of Sérine from Saint-Joseph. Plowing, cover crops, biodynamic preparations and gradual replanting support the restoration of the soils.

Winemaking at Roc des Anges

Winemaking at Roc des Anges aims to be as low-intervention as possible, but never imprecise. The grapes are harvested early, at measured levels of ripeness, to preserve acidity and energy. Fermentation takes place with native yeasts alone, in closed concrete tanks without temperature control: for the Gallets, a wine’s freshness is created in the vineyard, not by refrigeration. The red grapes are mostly destemmed and undergo very little extraction—often just a single pump-over to even out the fermenting wine—before being pressed and returned to tank to finish fermentation.

Aging is gentle and respectful, in concrete tanks, large oak casks or 600-liter barrels, without an overt oak imprint, for nine to eighteen months depending on the cuvée. The estate does not fine its wines, filters them only very lightly and keeps total sulfur dioxide between 30 and 50 milligrams per liter, some of which forms naturally during fermentation. Several cuvées take a different path: oxidative aging under a veil of yeast for the wines made in that style, and the addition of alcohol to stop fermentation for the naturally sweet Maury wines, where Stéphane Gallet’s experience shines.

The Cuvées of Roc des Anges

Llum (white Côtes du Roussillon) is the introduction to the white wine range, a blend of Grenache Gris and Macabeu grown on very shallow schist soils without clay. Crystalline, saline, floral and taut, it exemplifies the estate’s precise, luminous style.

Iglesia Vella ("old church" in Catalan) comes from a plot of old Grenache Gris vines near the former site of the village church. Considered the white counterpart to Las Trabasseres, this wine from bedrock soils combines concentration, focused intensity and a saline finish. It is one of Roussillon’s greatest white wines.

L’Oca is a 100% Macabeu from a plot where a seam of red clay runs through the schist. This gives it a rounded, generous texture that yields to a focused intensity, with stone fruit, Mediterranean scents and spicy minerality.

Pi Vell ("old pine") comes from an elevation of 260 meters, facing the Pyrenees and Pic de Bugarach. Wind, rock and light come together in an elegant, complex Macabeu, combining wild herbs, citrus, white fruit and a salinity that carries through the finish.

Imalaya is the estate’s rarest cuvée: a Carignan Gris grown on granite at an elevation of 500 meters, an obscure variety with only around twenty hectares remaining in France. Stony, smoky minerality, airy sophistication, juicy fruit and a vibrant, lingering finish make it a must-try.

Chamane gives Muscat à Petits Grains a new lease on life—a variety the couple initially considered pulling out. Vinified dry, it reveals pronounced minerality and liveliness that take precedence over the variety’s usual aromatic exuberance.

Cioran is the estate’s wine aged under a veil of yeast. It began in 2006 with three barrels set aside and allowed to develop a yeast veil. Its name is an anagram of “rancio” and a nod to the writer. Harvested early, like the dry whites, it is a fine, pure, incisive rancio, far removed from the region’s heavier versions.

Alquimia takes this exploration of oxidative aging further: a blend of Grenache Gris and Macabeu from different vintages, aged under a veil of yeast, from schist and claystone soils. Complex, saline and profoundly original.

Les Vignes Métissées is the estate’s rosé, made from plots replanted with white grape varieties alongside a few red ones (Muscat, Grenache Gris, Blanc and Noir, Picpoul, Cinsault). Its pale color comes from the terroir and mixed planting, not the winemaking.

Segna de Cor, whose name is almost exactly Roc des Anges in reverse, blends approximately 40% Grenache Noir, 30% Carignan and 30% Syrah from around twenty small schist plots. Dark fruit, Mediterranean herbs, olive and dark chocolate: a characterful red that drinks easily and charms from the outset.

Reliefs is based on a selection of old-vine Carignan, complemented by Grenache, Syrah and Lladoner Pelut depending on the vintage. More structured than Segna de Cor, it combines generous fruit, gentle spice and freshness, with the capacity to age well for five to eight years.

1903 is the estate’s signature cuvée, a pure Carignan from vines planted that year on the schist of Montner. Minuscule yields, deep color, a pure nose of small red berries and a dense, contemplative palate: a global benchmark for the variety, to enjoy over ten years or more.

Las Trabasseres comes from a single north-facing plot planted in 1913 on pure schist. Since the 2018 vintage, it has been bottled separately only in the most successful years; the rest goes into the 1903 blend. An austere, distinguished Carignan with exceptional length.

Ùnic is an old-vine Grenache Noir from a single barrel, grown on highly permeable schist. Deep without being heavy, with a remarkable fineness to its tannins, it shows the finesse Grenache can achieve in Roussillon.

Australe is made entirely from Sérine, an old Syrah variety grown from a massal selection sourced in Saint-Joseph. A nod to Marjorie Gallet’s Rhône Valley roots, it has been described as a wild Côte-Rôtie from Roussillon: floral, peppery, elegant and produced in very small quantities.

Astérolide is 100% Mourvèdre, a wine of character, savory and austere in its youth, that benefits greatly from a few years in the cellar. Spice, garrigue, iron and firm tannins define its character.

Satine blends Carignan and Syrah from the estate’s shallowest schist soils. Vinified in concrete tank with a single pump-over, it is aged for nine months in tank and large oak casks, then for another eighteen months in bottle before release.

Fagayra Blanc (white Maury, Les Terres de Fagayra) comes from a north-facing plot on a rise at the foot of the limestone wall of Quéribus. With its very stony soil and interplay of limestone and schist, this naturally sweet wine is chalky, taut, fresh and airy, with floral and citrus notes.

Fagayra Rouge is a Maury made from Grenache Noir planted in 1949 on shallow schist and limestone soils. A distinctive naturally sweet wine, it combines prune, fig and cocoa with a freshness that lightens its richness—ideal with a chocolate dessert or aged blue cheese.

Op. Nord completes the Maury trilogy. Born of deep schist soils, it has an earthy character, depth on the palate and an enveloping texture, with fruit concentration and power held in calm balance.
