The Premiers Crus of the Côte de Beaune represent the intermediate tier of the Burgundian hierarchy, just below the grands crus, and bring together the best-exposed climats from around twenty communes in the southern Côte-d'Or. Chardonnay here produces the most sought-after white wines in the world — broad, saline and precise — in Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, while Pinot Noir yields in Volnay, Pommard, Beaune and Savigny-lès-Beaune reds with vibrant fruit, a silky texture and fine tannins. Each climat bears its own name on the label, allowing one to taste the nuances from one terroir to the next.
