Where is the Aloxe-Corton appellation located?

The Aloxe-Corton appellation is located in Burgundy, in the Côte-d'Or, at the northern tip of the Côte de Beaune, approximately four kilometers north-east of Beaune and around forty kilometers south-west of Dijon. The village, tiny and nestled at the foot of the Corton hill crowned by its wood, produces wine on its own territory as well as on part of that of Ladoix-Serrigny. The vineyard covers approximately 120 hectares in production, planted between 200 and 330 meters in altitude, on hillsides facing due east and south-east. Ladoix-Serrigny borders this terroir to the north, Pernand-Vergelesses lies on the other side of the hill, with Chorey-lès-Beaune and Savigny-lès-Beaune to the south. The three communes share the famous Corton hill, of which Aloxe holds the largest portion.

History of the Aloxe-Corton appellation

The history of this vineyard is intertwined with that of the Corton hill, one of the most anciently renowned viticultural sites in Burgundy. Tradition holds that the Emperor Charlemagne owned vines here and donated them to a collegiate church in the 8th century, an episode that gave its name to the grand cru Corton-Charlemagne. The vineyard was subsequently worked by abbeys, the Dukes of Burgundy and the great Burgundian families, and the 19th century saw the hierarchy of the climats take shape: Jean Lavalle's 1855 work already placed Corton, Clos du Roi, les Renardes, les Chaumes and Charlemagne among the outstanding wines, while the Beaune agricultural committee classified in 1861 nearly half of the commune's finest vines in the first class. Like several villages on the côte, Aloxe then added the name of its most famous cru to its own. The appellation d'origine contrôlée was recognized by the decree of 11 March 1938, with fourteen climats classified as premier cru, while Corton, Corton-Charlemagne and Charlemagne were elevated to grand cru status. What grape varieties are permitted in the Aloxe-Corton appellation?

The permitted grape varieties are Pinot Noir for the reds and Chardonnay for the whites, with no blending between the two colors, in keeping with the customs of the Côte de Beaune. The dominance of Pinot Noir is here almost total, accounting for approximately 98% of production, which clearly distinguishes this appellation from its neighbors Pernand-Vergelesses and Ladoix-Serrigny. The reference vintages of the last thirty years are 1999, 2002, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022 and 2023. The natural structure of these wines means they particularly benefit from sunny and complete years: 2005, 2009, 2010, 2015 and 2019 rank among the greatest, with dense substance and long aging potential. 2017 and 2023 offer more supple and aromatic profiles, enjoyable earlier, while 2020 and 2022 combine ripeness and freshness. Conversely, 2003 produced heavy and atypical wines, 2004, 2011, 2012 and 2013 yielded uneven results requiring careful selection of the estate, and 2016, 2021 and 2024 were struck by frost or mildew, with very small harvests but a few fine successes from the best producers. Today, vintages from 2005 to 2015 are entering their full drinking window, 2018 to 2020 still merit several more years for the premier crus, and 2022 as well as 2023 are wines to cellar.

The finest estates here combine great historic négociants and a few family properties established at the foot of the hill. Maison Louis Latour, founded in 1797 and still independent, is the village's tutelary figure. Based at Château Corton Grancey, it holds the largest vineyard on the Corton hill, approximately seventeen hectares, and produces two absolute references: Château Corton Grancey, a blend from several Corton climats, and a Corton-Charlemagne that serves as the benchmark for the appellation. Its Aloxe-Corton cuvées offer a reliable introduction to the style of the commune.

Domaine du Comte Senard is the village's emblematic family estate. Spread over approximately nine hectares at the heart of the hill, it holds parcels in Corton Clos du Roi, Corton Bressandes, Corton-Charlemagne and the monopole of Clos des Meix, as well as several premier crus of Aloxe-Corton. Its reds, deep and well-structured, and the warm welcome at the estate — with a dining table open at Clos des Meix — make it one of the most sought-after addresses in the appellation.

Domaine Tollot-Beaut, based in Chorey-lès-Beaune, holds one of the finest collections of Aloxe-Corton premier cru parcels, complemented by holdings in Corton Bressandes. This family estate has built its reputation on exemplary consistency vintage after vintage, with wines that are generous, well-crafted and remarkably reliable, frequently cited as offering the best value for money in the area.

Domaine Chandon de Briailles, run by the de Nicolay family using certified biodynamic viticulture from Savigny-lès-Beaune, holds superb parcels on the hill, notably in Corton Bressandes, Clos du Roi and Les Maréchaudes. Whole-cluster vinifications, measured extractions and a discreet use of oak yield wines of rare transparency and energy, highly sought after by lovers of elegant Pinot Noir.

Domaine Faiveley, the great négociant from Nuits-Saint-Georges, holds on the hill the monopole of Corton Clos des Cortons Faiveley, one of the most powerful and age-worthy red grand crus in all of Burgundy. The estate also offers excellent Corton-Charlemagne and premier crus from the area, in a style that has gained considerably in precision over the past fifteen years or so.

How long should an Aloxe-Corton wine be cellared?

An Aloxe-Corton wine keeps longer than the Côte de Beaune average, generally between five and twenty years. Village reds are ideally enjoyed between five and twelve years, allowing time for the tannic framework to integrate and for the fruit to give way to notes of spice and undergrowth. The premier crus, notably Les Fournières, Les Valozières and Le Clos du Chapitre, require at least six to eight years of patience and hold comfortably for fifteen to twenty years in great vintages. The grand crus of the hill often surpass twenty-five years. The rare whites are best drunk between four and ten years. The ideal cellar is kept between 11 and 14 °C, with good humidity, away from light and vibrations, with bottles stored on their sides. Decanting for one hour benefits young premier crus that are still closed on their tannins, while bottles over fifteen years old should be decanted with care, solely to separate the sediment.
