The TOP winemakers of Loire

Before deciding to settle in Anjou and acquire 1 hectare of Chenin, Grolleau, and Cabernet Franc vines at La Faye d'Anjou in 2010, they began working together at Mark Angeli's and Benoît Courault's estates, which is where their choice to turn to organic farming originated. In 2011, they expanded their vineyard by acquiring an additional 3 hectares of vines, including a beautiful plot named Clos des Grands Champs, a terroir whose soil composed of spilite (volcanic rock) closely resembles the renowned Noëls de Montbenault (from the Richard Leroy estate). At Domaine Hodgson, the work is done in the vineyard to obtain the best possible grape quality and thus avoid correcting the wine in the cellar with additives, which allows for the production of pure and flavorful wines. Winemaking takes place in the cellar built next to their home, in the heart of the village of Rablay-sur-Layon, in the most natural way possible, with Mai and Kenji guiding the wines without superfluous intervention. Among the cuvées offered as Vin de France: The Hodgson La Grande Pièce cuvée: a pure Grolleau Noir, produced in fewer than 1,000 bottles per year, and aged 12 months in barrels. A wine with a bouquet of red fruits and spices, a fresh palate, very fine tannins, and a beautifully balanced structure. The Hodgson Faia cuvée: a dry Chenin, also barrel-aged, with notes of quince, linden, and hay. The Hodgson Les Aussigouins cuvée: this 100% Chenin, made more complex by two years of aging, comes from a superb terroir. Beautiful aromas of white peach, pear, and mirabelle plum at perfect ripeness mingle with subtle and delicious notes of linden and acacia. This cuvée, with no added sulfur, charms the palate, wonderfully marrying the unctuous, fleshy texture with a very refreshing mineral backbone. The Hodgson O Galarneau cuvée is a pure Cabernet Franc, a blend of several plots situated around the commune of Rablay-sur-Layon, notably Les Rouliers (also found at Richard Leroy). Fermentation takes place through the action of indigenous yeasts alone, and aging is carried out in vats for 12 months. A surprising wine, with notes of cherry and pepper, combining indulgence and fruitiness, with a lovely spiced finish. The HODGSON estate is one to discover and to follow, as the wines it offers go beyond the usual standards of Anjou. Natural wine enthusiasts will be delighted.
