Hodgson wines in the Loire: organic wines to watch
In 2009 Mai and Kenji HODGSON came directly from Canada to settle in the Loire at Rablay-sur-Layon (the same commune as Richard Leroy).
Before deciding to settle in Anjou and acquire 1 Ha of Chenin, Grolleau and Cabernet Franc vines in La Faye d'Anjou in 2010, they began by working together at Mark Angeli and Benoît Courault, hence their choice to turn to organic farming. In 2011, they expanded their vineyard by acquiring an additional 3 Ha of vines, including a beautiful plot called le Clos des Grands Champs, a terroir whose soil composed of spilite (volcanic rock) is quite similar to the renowned Noëls de Montbenault (from Domaine Richard Leroy). At Domaine Hodgson, the work is done in the vineyard, to obtain the best possible quality of grapes and thus, not correct the wine in the cellar with additives, which allows them to offer pure and flavorful wines. Vinification takes place in the cellar arranged next to their house, in the heart of the village of Rablay-sur-Layon, in the most natural way possible, with Mai and Kenji accompanying the wines without superfluous interventions. Among the cuvées offered as Vin de France: The Hodgson La Grande Pièce cuvée: a pure Grolleau Noir, produced at less than 1000 bt/year, and aged 12 months in barrels. A wine with a bouquet of red fruits and spices, a fresh palate, very fine tannins, and a beautifully balanced structure. The Hodgson Faia cuvée: a dry Chenin, also aged in barrels, with notes of quince, linden and hay. The Hodgson Les Aussigouins cuvée: this 100% Chenin, complexified by 2 years of aging, comes from a superb terroir. The beautiful aromas of white peach, pear and perfectly ripe mirabelle plum blend with subtle and delicious notes of linden and acacia. This cuvée, with no added sulfur, charms the palate, beautifully combining unctuous and fleshy material with a very refreshing mineral structure. The Hodgson O Galarneau cuvée is a pure Cabernet Franc, an assembly of several plots located around the commune of Rablay-sur-Layon, notably les Rouliers (which can also be found at Richard Leroy). Fermentation occurs through the action of indigenous yeasts alone, and aging is carried out in tanks for 12 months. A surprising wine, with cherry and pepper notes, which combines indulgence and fruitiness, and reveals a nice spicy note in the finish. Domaine HODGSON is to be discovered and followed, as the wines offered break away from the usual Anjou standards. Fans of natural wines will be delighted.
