Domaine Alain Chabanon was established in the early 1990s following the acquisition of 14 hectares of vines spread across the communes of Montpeyroux, Saint-Saturnin, Jonquières, Lagamas and Saint-André-de-Sangonis. Alain Chabanon's vineyard is located at the foot of the foothills of the Larzac plateau, and the first vintage of this committed winemaker was the 1992 vintage.

The TOP winemakers of Languedoc

From 2002, the Alain Chabanon estate became certified organic, and it transitioned entirely to biodynamics in 2011. Originally in 1992, the cellar of the Alain Chabanon estate was based in Montpeyroux, but more recently, Alain Chabanon inaugurated his new underground facilities located in Lagamas. Quality is the guiding principle at Domaine Chabanon, both in the vineyard (healthy viticulture and low yields) and in the cellar (the top cuvées benefit from long ageing of up to 3 years). The wines are very accomplished and have an uncommon ageing potential (15 years and more). Among the wines, L'Esprit de Fontcaude is the flagship cuvée of the Alain Chabanon estate, and it is composedof 45% Syrah, 45% Mourvèdre and 10% Grenache. With 5 weeks of maceration and ageing of 36 months, including 24 months in French oak barrels, this wine combines finesse and length. The very dense garnet-purple colour develops aromas of macerated fruits and coffee. The palate is both full and structured, with tannins of great finesse, but this wine will benefit from a few more years of patience, and it can be kept for at least 10 years without declining. The cuvée Merle aux alouettes, an IGP Pays d'Oc, is a rare and surprising 100% Merlot, with an almost black colour. On the nose, one finds fresh and intense notes of black fruits, spices and liquorice with a subtle hint of vanilla. On the palate, the attack is round, full, powerful, supported by elegant aromas of black fruits. The tannins are generous but well integrated, and the full, warm finish offers a fine ageing potential. The cuvée Les Boissières by Alain Chabanon is composed of 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre. The nose is rather intense, dominated by notes of cherries in brandy. The palate is full-bodied and the Grenache is well-expressed in the cuvée through its notes of stone fruits and liquorice. Domaine Alain Chabanon also offers the Saut de Côte, a cuvée with 80% Mourvèdre and 20% Syrah, unique since wines with a majority of Mourvèdre are quite rare in Languedoc. The wine is refined and suave, of great class, silky and complex, and it has benefited from ageing in an egg-shaped tank. Finally, on the side of Languedoc white wines, the cuvée Trelans by Alain Chabanon is a great white wine for gastronomy, made from Vermentino (60%) and Chenin (40%), with a golden and limpid colour. Its nose of quince, exotic fruits and vanilla may come as a surprise, but thanks to its superb balance, it combines richness of aromas with a fresh palate that lingers at length. Alain Chabanon is a leading producer of the Languedoc, and his cuvées are therefore highly recommended.
