Wines from the Marnes Blanches estate by Pauline and Géraud Fromont: a fine organic estate to watch in Jura
The MARNES BLANCHES estate is a domaine located in Sainte Agnès in the Jura and was founded by Pauline and Géraud Fromont in 2006. With around ten hectares of vines taken over in the Sud Revermont area, the vineyard is divided into 3 clusters: Cesancey, Vincelles and Sainte Agnès. The Cesancey plots were the first to be acquired, and are characterised by a terroir of white marls — which is precisely why the estate takes its name from them.
The islets of Sainte Agnès and Vincelles are characterized by the presence of fossilized limestone called "gryphées", cousins of the oyster found in large quantities in the soil, mixing red marls and limestone gravels from the Triassic period. Domaine des Marnes Blanches is certified organic, with a choice of grassing and soil work, as well as minimal intervention during vinifications. The vines average over 45 years old, and some are very old and approach 100 years! The red grape varieties from Jura in production are Poulsard for half, Trousseau (around 35%) and Pinot Noir for the rest. On the white grape varieties from Jura side, we find primarily Chardonnay for two thirds and Savagnin for one third. Old grape varieties such as Melon Queue Rouge and Savagnin Muscaté are also exploited in minority. On the wine side, the Côtes du Jura Poulsard cuvée from Domaine des Marnes Blanches is produced from vines planted in marl soils, whose vinification is done with whole clusters with low extraction, followed by aging for 10 months in barrels. With a light color, the nose is superb, and the palate all fruit, well constructed, with vivacity, precision and a structure based on finesse. The Côtes du Jura Trousseau cuvée from Domaine des Marnes Blanches is very delicious on the palate and lets express beautiful floral aromas, supported by finely spiced notes and discreet tannins. A beautiful wine, all in delicacy and nuances. The Savagnin Muscaté En Jensillard cuvée from Domaine des Marnes Blanches is made from old 65-year-old vines rooted in white Lias marl soil, and located at 300 m altitude. Composed of 100% Savagnin Muscaté, an old variety from the region that is no longer very common to encounter, this cuvée remains faithful to its reputation in its exotic and musky notes, quite similar to those of a great Gewürztraminer from Alsace, but with the sharp, clean and precise side of a great Savagnin. One will perceive intense and seductive floral notes, paired with tropical fruit aromas. On the palate, the material is ample and delicious, with a tense and saline finish. Finally, the Vin Jaune cuvée from Domaine des Marnes Blanches presents a superb golden yellow robe, with a captivating nose of intense aromas of fresh walnuts, curry, almonds and spices. The palate is smooth, caressing, in an oxidative register, with beautiful fruity notes and a finish marked by a saline imprint. A wine that will worthily accompany a coq au vin jaune with morels, or even more simply a 36-month Comté. This type of wine (non-topped up) can be kept for more than 20 years…
