The wines of the domaine des Marnes Blanches by Pauline and Géraud Fromont: a fine organic estate to follow in the Jura
The domaine des MARNES BLANCHES is an estate located in Sainte Agnès in the Jura, founded by Pauline and Géraud Fromont in 2006. With around ten hectares of vines taken over in the Sud Revermont, the vineyard is divided into 3 plots: Cesancey, Vincelles, and Sainte Agnès. The Cesancey parcels were the first to be acquired, and are characterized by a terroir of white marls — it is therefore quite naturally from there that the estate takes its name.
The plots of Sainte Agnès and Vincelles are characterized by the presence of fossil limestone known as "gryphaea," cousins of the oyster that are found in great quantities in the soil, mingling red marls and calcareous gravels from the Triassic period. The domaine des Marnes Blanches is certified organic, with a commitment to cover crops and soil cultivation, as well as minimal intervention during winemaking. The vines average over 45 years of age, and some are very old, approaching 100 years! The red Jura grape varieties in production are Poulsard for half, Trousseau (approximately 35%) and Pinot Noir for the remainder. On the white Jura grape varieties side, one finds first Chardonnay for two thirds and Savagnin for 1 third. Ancient varieties such as Melon Queue Rouge and Savagnin Muscaté are also cultivated in smaller quantities. On the wine side, the Côtes du Jura Poulsard cuvée from the domaine des Marnes Blanches is produced from vines planted in marl soils, vinified as whole clusters with gentle extraction, followed by 10 months of ageing in barrels. Light in colour, the nose is superb, and the palate is all about fruit, well-structured, with vivacity, precision and a structure built on finesse. The Côtes du Jura Trousseau cuvée from the domaine des Marnes Blanches is very approachable on the palate and allows beautiful floral aromas to express themselves, supported by finely spiced notes and discreet tannins. A beautiful wine, all delicacy and nuance. The Savagnin Muscaté En Jensillard cuvée from the domaine des Marnes Blanches comes from old vines of 65 years taking root in a soil of white lias marls, situated at an altitude of 300 m. Composed of 100% Savagnin Muscaté, an old regional variety that is no longer very commonly encountered, this cuvée remains faithful to its reputation in its exotic and musky notes, quite similar to those of a great Gewürztraminer from Alsace, but with the sharp, clean and precise character of a great Savagnin. One will perceive intense and seductive floral notes, paired with tropical fruit aromas. On the palate, the texture is ample and indulgent, with a taut and saline finish. Finally, the Vin Jaune cuvée from the domaine des Marnes Blanches presents a superb golden yellow colour, with a captivating nose of intense aromas of fresh walnut, curry, almond and spices. The palate is soft and caressing, in an oxidative register, with beautiful fruity notes and a finish marked by a saline imprint. A wine that will worthily accompany a chicken in Vin Jaune with morels, or more simply a 36-month Comté. This style of wine (non-topped-up) can be kept for more than 20 years…
