In Menétru-le-Vignoble, in the heart of the Jura, nestled among the mythical slopes of Château-Chalon, La Grange 476 is the passionate creation of a young couple, Dimitri Vetois and Marion Valverde. Originally from Berry and Auvergne, they founded the estate in 2019 and now cultivate approximately 4 hectares of old vines planted on the great terroirs of grey and blue marl (Beaumont, Sous-Roche, Les Bouchettes, L'Angevré). Committed from the outset to organic farming with a biodynamic approach, they plough their vines by horse with their Comtois Solferino and Khyr, and produce single-plot cuvées of exceptional purity from Savagnin, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Poulsard and Melon à Queue Rouge. A natural, patient and precise signature that has established itself in just a few vintages as one of the most promising young estates in the Jura.
The adventure of La Grange 476 begins with the meeting of two destinies from elsewhere. Dimitri Vetois, originally from Berry, obtained a BTS in Viticulture and Oenology and then enriched his experience in vineyards in France and New Zealand, before settling in the Jura. Marion Valverde, originally from Auvergne, first worked as a nurse, a career she left to train in equine traction and fully embrace her passion for the land and horses. Their hearts and their fortune led them to Menétru-le-Vignoble, a small emblematic wine village of the Côtes du Jura, just a few kilometers from the prestigious Château-Chalon appellation.
After nearly five years of searching, the couple realized their dream in 2019 with the acquisition of a small house and a cellar in Menétru-le-Vignoble, accompanied by 2.5 hectares of vines on the surrounding hillsides. They named their estate "La Grange 476," an evocative name linked to their place of establishment. Over successive vintages, they gradually extended their vineyard to approximately 4 hectares of old vines, spread over small plots in some of the finest terroirs of Château-Chalon, such as Beaumont and Sous-Roche. From the outset, they chose organic farming and biodynamics, and invested in Comtois draft horses for plowing. Within just a few vintages, the estate has established itself as one of the finest natural revelations of the Jura.
The La Grange 476 vineyard extends over approximately 4 hectares, spread over small plots dispersed across the south-facing hillsides of Menétru-le-Vignoble and Château-Chalon. The soils are characteristic of the Jura: grey and blue Liassic marls, sometimes mixed with calcareous scree, which lend the wines a saline minerality and a characteristic freshness. The emblematic plots bear evocative names (Les Bouchettes, L'Angevré, Sous-Roche, Beaumont) which now appear on the estate's cuvée labels, in keeping with a clearly asserted single-plot approach.
The planting is composed primarily of the emblematic grape varieties of the Jura: Savagnin (the king grape of Château-Chalon), Chardonnay, Poulsard, Pinot Noir, as well as the rare Melon à Queue Rouge. The vines are old, precious testimonies of a preserved Jurassian viticultural heritage. Dimitri and Marion have managed their vineyard in organic farming and according to the principles of biodynamics from the very beginning, with a desire to leave the vines and the surrounding nature as free as possible. The soils are worked by horse, with their Comtois Solferino and Khyr, a mark of their deep commitment to a respectful, living and sustainable agriculture. This philosophy guarantees great biodiversity and exceptional soil health, essential conditions for wines that are faithful to their micro-terroirs.
In the cellar, Dimitri Vetois applies a winemaking philosophy founded on patience and tranquility. Harvests are entirely manual, with rigorous sorting in the vineyard. Fermentations are conducted solely with the indigenous yeasts native to the grapes, with no additions whatsoever. No oenological inputs are used. The couple favors a minimalist approach, which allows the wines to develop and naturally express the singularity of each plot.
For the whites, the grapes are pressed directly and the must transferred into old barrels for extended aging, without systematic topping-up depending on the cuvée, which allows the Savagnin and Chardonnay to express their personality with or without an oxidative signature as the case may be. For the reds, destemming is carried out by hand, in the old-fashioned way, on cane racks, a traditional technique that is rare today. Aging is long, several months in old barrels, a guarantee of balance and purity. No fining, no filtration, and minimal use of sulfur. The stated objective is to produce wines that are beneficial for body and mind, in a sustainable and respectful approach, which is part of the new wave of great natural winemakers of the Jura.
