Wines from Domaine Valma: buy at the best price

Domaine Valma is one of the finest recent discoveries of the Fleurie appellation, created in 2021 by Valentine and Stéphane Mathieu, a couple passionate about wine and the Beaujolais region, who came from the world of marketing and wine trading. "Val" and "ma": the domaine's name is a contraction of the couple's first names, a sign of a deeply personal and shared project. Settled on 5.5 hectares of a superb parcel selection in Fleurie spread across three prestigious lieux-dits (La Madone, La Chapelle des Bois and Les Labourons), Valentine and Stéphane quickly began the organic conversion of the vineyard from 2022, while vinifying with whole bunches using indigenous yeasts and ageing their wines in old barrels and vats. Their style is defined by freshness, purity and elegance, "far from stereotypical Beaujolais wines, with a surprising ageing potential for wines this easy to drink."

History of Domaine Valma

The story of Domaine Valma is one of a bold and successful career change. Valentine and Stéphane Mathieu did not come from the wine world in the strict sense: after careers in marketing and wine trading, they had developed a deep passion for natural wines and the terroirs of Fleurie in particular. The Fleurie appellation, with its floral and elegant wines on granitic soils, won them over to the point of changing everything. In 2021, they settled in the heart of Beaujolais and took over 5.5 hectares across an exceptional parcel selection covering three of Fleurie's most renowned lieux-dits: La Madone, the iconic hill overlooking the appellation, La Chapelle des Bois in the southern part, and Les Labourons.

From the very beginning, Valentine and Stéphane committed to a respectful form of viticulture: organic conversion initiated in 2022, whole-bunch vinification with indigenous yeasts, ageing in old barrels and vats with no new oak. By participating in winemaker gatherings, getting involved in local events and following the advice of the region's experienced vignerons, they became part of the community of committed winemakers in Fleurie. Their ambition is clear: to produce sincere wines that express with finesse the full richness of Fleurie's granitic terroir, with particular attention to soil biology and progressive biodynamic practices. In just a few vintages, their cuvées have attracted the attention of wine merchants and natural wine enthusiasts.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Valma

The Domaine Valma vineyard extends over 5.5 hectares, entirely within the Fleurie appellation, spread across three complementary lieux-dits. La Madone is the appellation's iconic lieu-dit, named after the statue of the Virgin Mary that dominates Fleurie from the eponymous hill. The vines there are planted on pink, coarse-crystal sandy granitic soils, on well-exposed slopes. La Chapelle des Bois, in the southern part of the appellation, offers a north-west facing exposure at 250-300 metres altitude, with old vines on granite. Les Labourons is planted on very poor, well-drained sandy granitic soils, encouraging low vine vigour and natural concentration of the grapes.

The fourth lieu-dit, Les Rangs Tard, lends its name to a particular cuvée, designating vine rows with later ripening that produce grapes harvested after the other parcels for a specific aromatic expression. The entire vineyard has been certified organic conversion since 2022. Harvesting is done by hand. Yields are kept around 40-43 hl/ha for Les Labourons. Valentine and Stéphane are progressively exploring biodynamic practices to improve soil biology.

Vinifications at Domaine Valma

Valentine and Stéphane Mathieu vinify with an intuitive and precise approach, inherited from their background in the natural wine trade. The harvested grapes arrive whole at the cellar. Semi-carbonic maceration takes place with indigenous yeasts, without intensive pumping over, for 10 to 12 days depending on the cuvée. Alcoholic fermentation is conducted naturally. Ageing lasts approximately 6 months in stainless steel vats and old large barrels, with no new oak whatsoever, to preserve freshness and aromatic purity. The wines are not fined. Filtration is light or absent depending on the cuvée. Sulphur doses are very low, in keeping with the natural ethos championed by the estate.

The Cuvées of Domaine Valma

Fleurie Les Labourons : A single-parcel red cuvée from the Les Labourons plot, very poor and well-drained sandy granitic soils. Manual harvesting, semi-carbonic maceration for 10-12 days, indigenous yeasts, 6 months ageing in stainless steel vats and old large barrels. "Floral finesse, mineral tension, brilliance of the red fruit." Aromas of cherry, raspberry and flowers, a chiselled and fresh palate, characteristic granitic mineral tension. One of the most precise and most typical cuvées of the estate.

Fleurie La Madone : Iconic red cuvée from the lieu-dit La Madone, the appellation's emblematic terroir that dominates Fleurie from the top of its hill. Pink sandy granitic soils, generous exposure. A red wine of superior elegance and aromatic complexity, with intense floral aromas (violet, peony), ripe red fruits and a deep granitic minerality. The estate's flagship cuvée for lovers of age-worthy Fleurie.

Fleurie La Chapelle des Bois : Red cuvée from the lieu-dit La Chapelle des Bois, southern part of Fleurie, north-west facing at 250-300 metres altitude. Old vines. A red wine of alpine freshness and lightness characteristic of this exposure, with red fruit aromas and a delicate, airy palate. The freshest and most refined cuvée of the estate.

Fleurie Les Rangs Tard : A confidential red cuvée from vine rows with later ripening, harvested after the other parcels. This delayed ripening lends the wine a more developed aromatic expression and additional complexity. An expressive and original red wine, revealing a lesser-known facet of Fleurie. A cuvée for the estate's curious enthusiasts.

Prélude (Fleurie) : The estate's entry-level cuvée, conceived as an "introduction" to the Valma universe and to the Fleurie appellation. Gamay on granitic soils, vinified by semi-carbonic maceration. A fruity and accessible red wine, with the cherry and raspberry aromas typical of Fleurie, a light and silky palate. The cuvée to share among friends and discover the estate's fresh and pure style.

Fleurie Vins des Amis : A convivial and festive cuvée, in the spirit of sharing among friends that drives Valentine and Stéphane's project. An immediately pleasurable red wine, fruity and indulgent, in a light and easy-drinking style. The cuvée you open spontaneously in good company, true to the spirit of the estate.
