Arnaud et Malou Greiner

Wines from Domaine Arnaud et Malou Greiner: buy at the best price

The Arnaud et Malou Greiner domaine is an artisanal and confidential project nestled in Liesle, a small village in the Doubs on the doorstep of the Jura, near Besançon. On barely one hectare of old vines spread across micro forest plots, Arnaud Greiner — also right-hand man to Étienne Thiebaud at Domaine des Cavarodes — crafts natural wines of great purity together with his partner Malou. Certified organic by Ecocert, the domaine works with the emblematic grape varieties of the Jura (Chardonnay, Savagnin, Trousseau, Poulsard, Pinot Noir, Melon à Queue Rouge), with no added sulphur, no fining and no filtration.

History of Domaine Arnaud et Malou Greiner

The story of Domaine Arnaud et Malou Greiner is that of a human-scale project, pursued as a duo, in complete discretion. Arnaud Greiner, a young and passionate winemaker, trained for several years alongside various Jura winemakers before becoming the right-hand man of Étienne Thiebaud at Domaine des Cavarodes, an absolute reference for natural viticulture in the region. This extended experience instilled in him a taste for finely crafted wines, spontaneous fermentations and work that respects all living things.

Alongside his work at les Cavarodes, Arnaud began vinifying his own grapes on tiny parcels around the village of Liesle, in the Doubs. The estate's first commercial bottling dates from 2018. Together with his partner Malou, he gradually built up a confidential range, with labels designed by illustrator Cécile Mouget, which quickly became one of the most sought-after among lovers of French and international natural wines. Volumes remain minuscule (barely a few thousand bottles), making each cuvée a true rarity.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Arnaud et Malou Greiner

The estate cultivates just under one hectare in total, fragmented into six micro-parcels located between the Jura and the Doubs, around Liesle. All of these parcels share the distinctive feature of being nestled at the edge of or within the forest, sheltered from surrounding agricultural treatments. The soils combine deep clays (up to forty centimetres thick) over a calcareous substratum, calcareous marls conducive to Savagnin, and terroirs typical of the Franche-Comté region that bring salinity, minerality and tension to the wines.

The grape selection is a true patchwork of Jura and ancient varieties: Chardonnay, Savagnin, Melon à Queue Rouge (a rare, long-forgotten variety with low yields and thin skin), Poulsard, Trousseau, Pinot Noir, as well as several ancient varieties. Some vines are over eighty years old and plunge deep into the bedrock to extract its mineral quintessence. All vineyard work is done by hand, sometimes with a horse, under certified organic farming and inspired by biodynamic principles, with absolute care given to biodiversity and soil vitality.

Vinification at Domaine Arnaud et Malou Greiner

In the cellar, Arnaud Greiner practises an almost monastic approach to winemaking, in the direct lineage of the great natural wines of the Jura. The grapes, harvested by hand, are gently pressed (often by direct pressing for the whites) and then ferment spontaneously thanks solely to the indigenous yeasts present on the berries. No inputs are added — and above all no sulphur, neither in the tank nor at bottling.

The ageing periods are long, generally two years in old barrels or 600-litre oak foudres, sometimes extended in fibre tanks to allow the lees to settle naturally and thus avoid any fining or filtration at bottling. This discipline allows for a controlled oxidation through the porosity of the wood, giving rise to pure, vibrant, deeply saline wines endowed with a rare energy and an aromatic precision that are the signature of the estate.

The cuvées of Domaine Arnaud et Malou Greiner

Sortie de Route (white): the estate's most emblematic cuvée, crafted from Chardonnay sourced from a micro-parcel of around thirty years of age, planted on deep clay soils resting on calcareous bedrock. Direct pressing, spontaneous fermentation followed by two years of ageing in 600-litre oak foudres on the lees. Bottled without fining or filtration. The wine presents itself as fresh and fragrant, with notes of citrus and a mineral touch, a delicate, elegant and sapid palate. A Jura Chardonnay of great purity, to be enjoyed young.

La Sortie de Route (red): the red counterpart to the previous cuvée, crafted from the typical red grape varieties of the Jura (Pinot Noir, Trousseau, Poulsard depending on the vintage). Vinification with whole or semi-whole clusters depending on the year, spontaneous fermentation and ageing in old barrels, with no added sulphur. A glou-glou, fruity, easy-drinking and sincere wine that perfectly reflects Arnaud Greiner's airy and precise style.

Lavenard: a 100% Savagnin cuvée from a small parcel planted on calcareous marls. Vinified and aged for nearly two years in old barrels, with no added sulphur. The Savagnin, which drives its roots very deep into the bedrock, yields here a wine of striking minerality, sapid and saline, with great aromatic purity. A finely crafted expression of one of the Jura's most emblematic grape varieties.

Les Vieilles Gallines: a white cuvée crafted from the rare Melon à Queue Rouge, an ancient variety long forgotten, grown by the Greiners on a small organic parcel of calcareous marls. Manual harvest, direct pressing, spontaneous fermentation in tanks followed by two years of ageing in old barrels. The colour is golden, the nose offers notes of citrus and white flowers underpinned by a mineral nuance, the palate is lively, almost saline, and wonderfully fresh. A botanical and oenological rarity.

La Cart'Ouche: a generous and approachable red cuvée, a blend of Pinot Noir, Poulsard and Trousseau. Natural vinification, no sulphur, short ageing in old barrels. The wine is clear, slightly hazy, fruity and thirst-quenching, best enjoyed chilled in its youth. The label humorously depicts Arnaud's neighbouring winemakers as portraits, a nod to the village of Liesle.

Le Précieux: a cuvée born from the frost-marked 2021 vintage, in which Arnaud Greiner blended the grapes that would normally have made up Les Vieilles Gallines (Melon à Queue Rouge) and Lavenard (Savagnin). Produced in tiny quantities, this exceptional white combines aromatic depth, vibrancy, perfectly balanced acidity and great freshness. A precious cuvée in more ways than one, fully worthy of its name.
