Wines from Domaine Gérard Julien & Fils: buy at the best price

Based in Comblanchien, a charming village on the border of the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy, Domaine Gérard Julien & Fils is one of the essential references of the Côte de Nuits. Founded in 1882, this family estate is today led by Étienne Julien, the fifth generation of winemakers, overseeing ten hectares of vines spread across the finest appellations in the region: Côte de Nuits-Villages, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Aloxe-Corton and Échezeaux Grand Cru. A recognised specialist in Pinot Noir, the estate produces red wines of rare elegance, vinified with rigour and precision, in the utmost respect for Burgundian terroirs and the family traditions passed down since the late 19th century.

History of Domaine Gérard Julien & Fils

The history of Domaine Gérard Julien & Fils begins at the end of the 19th century, more precisely in 1882, when François-Xavier Julien acquired his first vine parcels in Comblanchien and Nuits-Saint-Georges. In the 1930s, the vineyard was taken over by his son Armand, the doyen of Comblanchien, who gradually expanded the estate despite a particularly difficult period for Burgundian viticulture, marked by the aftermath of the First World War, competition from wines of the Midi and Algeria, and the severe economic crisis of the 1930s.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Gérard Julien continued the expansion of the estate, which reached ten hectares and was enriched with prestigious parcels, notably in Nuits-Saint-Georges and in Échezeaux Grand Cru. Since 2012, Étienne Julien, representing the fifth generation, has led the estate with passion and exacting standards. Under his impetus, the domaine has begun a transition towards more environmentally respectful practices, with a progressive conversion to organic farming. A rising star of the Côte de Nuits, Étienne shines his cuvées across the globe while remaining deeply attached to the winemaking tradition inherited from his ancestors.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Gérard Julien & Fils

The vineyard of Domaine Gérard Julien & Fils extends over ten hectares located primarily in the Côte de Nuits, with a few complementary parcels in the Côte de Beaune. The flagship and most representative appellation of the estate is Côte de Nuits-Villages, which alone covers approximately 5.5 hectares spread across eight different climats around Comblanchien: Les Loges, Les Essarts, Aux Boulardes, Au Clos Bardot, La Platière, Les Retraits, Les Plantes aux Bois and La Julbigne. These parcels are planted exclusively with Pinot Noir, including a local singularity, the Pinot Noir à jus blanc, unique to the Côtes de Beaune and de Nuits.

To these are added parcels in Nuits-Saint-Georges covering 1.30 hectares spread across the climats of Longecourts, Maladières, Fleurières and Charbonnières in the south of the appellation, as well as to the north with a Premier Cru Les Bousselots, the Grand Cru Échezeaux in Flagey, and the estate's sole cuvée in the Côte de Beaune, Aloxe-Corton Les Valozières. The soils are predominantly marly and calcareous, with a proportion of sand and gravel on a Bajocian limestone base. Vine management is rigorous, with modern soil-working techniques, extensive budding removal to control yields and constant attention paid to the health of the vineyard.

Winemaking at Domaine Gérard Julien & Fils

In the cellar, Étienne Julien combines traditional expertise with modern precision. The harvests are entirely manual, followed by complete destemming of the berries. Vinification takes place primarily in concrete tanks, with a maceration of a few days and minimal punch-downs to preserve the finesse of the fruit. Fermentations proceed with indigenous yeasts, without chaptalization, in a minimal-intervention approach.

Ageing takes place in 228-litre oak barrels until the spring following the harvest. The proportion of new wood is tailored to each cuvée: approximately 30% for the Côte de Nuits-Villages and the Nuits-Saint-Georges Village, and up to 50% for the Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru and the Grand Cru Échezeaux, in order to reinforce the structure and ageing potential of the most noble wines. Étienne demonstrates great talent during the blending process, guiding the wine without ever masking it. The result is expressed in cuvées that are classic yet approachable, straight, digestible and representative of the very best that the Côte de Nuits has to offer, to be enjoyed in their youth or after a few years of cellaring.

The Cuvées of Domaine Gérard Julien & Fils

Bourgogne Aligoté: a cuvée paying tribute to an emblematic grape variety of Burgundy, this Bourgogne Aligoté offers lovely freshness, citrus and floral notes, and a taut, lively palate. Perfect as an aperitif or with seafood.

Bourgogne Rouge Origine: the entry-level wine of the estate, this regional Pinot Noir presents complex aromas of fresh mushrooms, caramel and raspberry, accompanied by notes of cherry and vanilla. A medium texture and lovely approachability from its youth.

Côte de Nuits-Villages: the estate's flagship cuvée and signature wine, this Côte de Nuits-Villages is sourced from eight different parcels around Comblanchien. The wine captivates with its great suppleness, a frank attack, a rush of red fruits and silky tannins. The most representative appellation of the estate, a perfect entry point into the house style.

Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Saints Julien: a village-level cuvée from the northern part of the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation, on soils of silt and calcareous gravel. A confidential production of approximately 3,500 bottles. The wine stands out for its finesse, explosive energy and refined balance, in a more airy style close to Vosne-Romanée.

Nuits-Saint-Georges Village: the estate's second village-level cuvée on the appellation, sourced from the south across 1.30 hectares spread over Longecourts, Maladières, Fleurières and Charbonnières. Production of approximately 6,000 bottles. The wine offers a fleshy and supple palate, great drinkability from its youth, and a fine capacity to improve in the cellar and express its complexity over the coming years.

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Bousselots: an emblematic Premier Cru from the northern part of Nuits-Saint-Georges, this wine stands out for its richness and restrained power. Aged with 50% new barrels, it offers a complex nose of dark fruits, spices and undergrowth, a dense, structured palate built for ageing, in a deep and refined style.

Aloxe-Corton Les Valozières: the estate's sole cuvée in the Côte de Beaune, sourced from a parcel on the climat Les Valozières. Soils of marl, red silt and gravel on a Bajocian limestone base. A discreet yet lively wine, endowed with firm tannins underpinning a well-structured frame, with fine ageing potential and the aromatic nobility characteristic of Aloxe-Corton.

Échezeaux Grand Cru: the jewel of the estate, this Grand Cru from a single plot in Flagey-Échezeaux delivers a voluptuous and harmonious Pinot Noir that elegantly reflects the stony terroir of the parcel. Deep colour, a rich and complex nose of dark fruits, noble spices and undergrowth, a silky and profound palate, a long and refined finish. An exceptional cuvée with considerable ageing potential.
