Domaine Méo Camuzet wines: buy at the best price!

In the 1920s, Etienne Camuzet purchased part of the vineyards of Château de Clos Vougeot. Etienne Camuzet's daughter, Maria Noirot (who died without children), later passed the estate to her nephew Jean Méo in 1959, and the estate would then be known as Méo Camuzet from 1981 onwards. Domaine Méo Camuzet is located in Vosne Romanée and encompasses numerous appellations including the grand crus: Corton (Clos Rognet, La vigne au Saint, Perrières), Richebourg, Echezeaux, Clos Vougeot and the 1ers crus: Vosne Romanée (Brulées, Chaumes, Cros Parentoux), Nuits St Georges (Argillas, Boudots, Murgers, Perrières), Chambolle Musigny (Cras, Feusselottes) and Fixin Clos du Chapitre

History of Domaine Méo-Camuzet

The history of Domaine Méo-Camuzet begins in the 17th century in the village of Selongey, where the Méo family prospered as winegrowers and coopers. From the 19th century, the Méos turned to public service, with figures such as the great-grandfather schoolteacher, the grandfather engineer, and Jean Méo, father of the current owner, who held prominent political positions, notably in the European Parliament. However, it is through the viticultural heritage of Marcelle Lamarche-Confuron, mother of Jean Méo, that the family anchored itself in Vosne-Romanée.

A decisive turning point came with Etienne Camuzet, cousin of Jean Méo's grandmother. An influential winegrower and deputy of Côte d'Or, Etienne played a key role in the creation of Appellations d'Origine Contrôlée in 1919 and acquired Château du Clos de Vougeot in 1920. Upon his death in 1946, his daughter Maria inherited the estate, which she bequeathed in 1959 to Jean Méo. Despite an intense Parisian career, Jean preserved the viticultural heritage with the help of sharecroppers, including the legendary Henri Jayer.

In 1984, Jean-Nicolas Méo, son of Jean, took over the estate at just 20 years old. Trained in oenology at the University of Burgundy and economics at the University of Pennsylvania, he learned the subtleties of vineyard and winemaking from Henri Jayer and Christian Faurois. Under his leadership, the estate rose to the top of the Burgundy hierarchy, becoming a global reference for its exceptional wines.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Méo-Camuzet

Domaine Méo-Camuzet possesses an exceptional viticultural heritage, with parcels in the most prestigious appellations of the Côte de Nuits. These terroirs, meticulously cultivated, produce wines that express with rare precision the diversity of Burgundy soils. Here is an overview of the main vineyards:

Vosne-Romanée: The heart of the estate, with parcels in legendary climats such as Grand Cru Richebourg, Premier Cru Aux Brûlées, Les Chaumes and the famous Cros Parantoux, immortalized by Henri Jayer.

Clos de Vougeot: Located at the foot of the château, this parcel of nearly 3 hectares benefits from stony soil favoring early ripening of the grapes.

Corton: The parcels of Corton Clos Rognet, Corton La Vigne au Saint and Corton Les Perrières produce robust and structured wines with great aging potential.

Echézeaux: A parcel in the Les Rouges du Bas climat, at the upper limit of the appellation, produces rich and complex wines.

Nuits-Saint-Georges: The Premiers Crus Aux Murgers and Aux Boudots offer powerful wines, marked by spicy notes and beautiful roundness.

Clos Saint-Philibert: The estate's only white wine, made from chardonnay planted in Flagey-Echezeaux, it stands out for its freshness and minerality.

Viticulture at Domaine Méo-Camuzet is guided by respect for the terroir and natural balances. Practices include reasoned pruning to limit yields, manual interventions to aerate the clusters, and a demanding organic approach, with frequent plowing and use of horses in difficult parcels.

Vinifications of Domaine Méo-Camuzet

The winemaking philosophy of Domaine Méo-Camuzet is based on minimal intervention to preserve the authentic expression of the terroir. Each step, from harvest to bottling, is carried out with meticulous precision:

Manual harvest: The grapes are harvested by hand and rigorously sorted, first in the vineyard if necessary, then on a sorting table at the winery, eliminating 5 to 20% of the berries depending on the vintage.

Maceration and fermentation: The grapes macerate cold (15°C) for 3 to 5 days before natural fermentation. Temperatures are controlled not to exceed 34-35°C, preserving freshness and fruit. Pumping over precedes punching down at the end of fermentation to release silky tannins.

Aging: The wines are aged in barrels, with a proportion of new barrels adapted to each cuvée (for example, Richebourg dominates new barrels, while Clos Saint-Philibert requires gentler aging). Aging lasts an average of 17 months, followed by blending in vat before bottling.

Bottling: Carried out by gravity, without fining or filtration, this step respects the raw material, guaranteeing lively and expressive wines.

This approach, inherited from Henri Jayer and refined by Jean-Nicolas Méo, favors finesse and balance, while highlighting the personality of each climat and vintage.
