Faiveley

A Burgundian estate full of renewal

Wines from Domaine Faiveley: buy at the best price

Established at the heart of Nuits Saint Georges and founded by Pierre Faiveley in 1825, Domaine Faiveley is one of Burgundy's historic estates, and has undertaken further expansion through the lease of the ZIBETTI estate (in Chambolle Musigny) and the acquisition of the Dupont Tisserandot estate (in Gevrey Chambertin) and Billaud Simon (in Chablis). Today, Erwan Faiveley (who succeeded his father in 2005 and represents the 7th generation) heads an estate of 120 ha of vines (of which 30 ha are white), making it a major player in the Burgundy wine world.

Domaine Faiveley offers 3 white Grand Crus (Bienvenue Batard Montrachet and Batard Montrachet, parcels acquired in 2008; and Corton Charlemagne, historically part of Domaine Faiveley since 1874), and 8 red Grand Crus (Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Charmes Chambertin, Clos de Vougeot, Corton, Echezeaux, Latricières Chambertin, Mazis Chambertin and Musigny). Complemented by an impressive palette of 25 Premier Crus including 7 in Gevrey Chambertin (Lavaux St Jacques, Perrières, Petite Chapelle, Combe au Moines, Cazetiers, Clos des Issarts, Craipillots) and 4 in Nuits St Georges (including les Porêts St Georges, les Damodes and les St Georges) and 3 in Puligny Montrachet (Champ Gain, la Garenne, and les Réferts: bordering Meursault), in addition to other appellations such as Beaune, Pommard, Mercurey and Monthélie. The percentage of destemming and whole-cluster harvest varies according to the appellations and the profile of the vintage, accompanied by aging of 12 to 18 months in moderately toasted French oak barrels. The red Burgundy wines from Domaine Faiveley are built around a dense and sometimes austere substance in their youth; they often require patience and a little aeration in order to be appreciated at their true value. The reds from the 2015 vintage prove to be very ripe, with suppler, well-integrated tannins. The Chambertin Clos de Bèze produces 2 cuvées: les Ouvrées Rodin, a tribute to the sculptor, is sourced from old vines and is superb — a touch more subtle than the classic cuvée in recent vintages. The Musigny, sourced from a tiny 0.13 ha parcel, produces rare bottles worthy of a great fine wine. The Corton "Clos des Cortons" 2015 is sumptuous and likely destined to flourish for a minimum of 15 years. The estate's wines deserve recognition for their aging ability, and as such, one would do well to wait a little before enjoying them.
