Appellation from Roussillon, which produces white or red Vins Doux Naturels, made from Grenache Blanc, Grenache Noir, Maccabéo, and Malvoisie (Torbado). The VDNs from the derivative appellation, Muscat de Rivesaltes, can only come from Muscat of Alexandria and Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains grape varieties. They can be bottled young or aged in barrels, in solera, or in glass demijohns exposed to the sun for deliberate oxidation, and very particular rancio aromas. Rivesaltes must wait 16 months from harvest before being released to market. Their colors range from golden to brown, depending on the grape variety used, and their aromas express dried grapes, coffee, cocoa, and nuts (if oxidized). While their quality does not yet match that of Banyuls or Maury, it is nevertheless improving. One of the best producers is Domaine Cazes.
