Clos du Caillou

The wines are made by Bruno Gaspard, assisted by oenologist Philippe Cambie, well-known in Châteauneuf du Pape for having crafted numerous Châteauneuf cuvées that achieved the supreme score of 100/100 Parker, as was the case for the cuvée La Réserve du Clos du Caillou in 2001, 2005, 2007 and 2010 (4 times 100/100 in one decade!). The Clos du Caillou covers 9 ha under the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation, situated on an exceptional terroir composed primarily of rounded galets (pebbles) and filtering sands, as well as 44 ha under Côtes du Rhône, though it is likely to soon incorporate into its holdings the domaine de Panisse (comprising 6.5 ha of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, acquired at the end of 2020). The Clos du Caillou is certified in Organic Agriculture and is moving towards biodynamic farming. However, there are no century-old vines here, as the estate's vineyard was, for the most part, planted in the 1950s, though the age of the vines is nonetheless venerable. The Clos du Caillou range comprises 5 Châteauneuf du Pape cuvées: 1 white — "Les Safres" — and 4 reds: "Tradition", "Les Safres", "Les Quartz" and finally the most renowned and celebrated: "La Réserve". In white, "Safres" (40% grenache blanc, 30% roussanne, 30% clairette) offers a very floral nose with slightly mineral notes of graphite; on the palate, the wine exhales aromas of flat peach and vineyard peach combined with blood orange and candied citron. A wine full of complexity and balance. Among the reds, "Safres" offers a nose of subtle red fruit aromas, orange zest and salted butter. The palate is smooth and fresh, with notes of cherries in eau-de-vie and cocoa, with superb balance, great finesse and a beautiful length. The cuvée "Les Quartz" — 70% grenache, 30% syrah — presents an elegant and subtle nose of orange marmalade and candied cherry aromas, combined with gentle spices. The palate is smooth and suave with a beautiful aromatic persistence, all elegance. Finally, "La Réserve" 2017 — 55% grenache and 45% mourvèdre — develops an enchanting, powerful yet delicate nose, blending aromas of plum liqueur and raspberry coulis. Its palate is superb, smooth and dynamic, with aromas of fresh fruit compote, wild blackberry, wild strawberry, blueberry and bilberry, accompanied by a few spiced notes of curry. In Côtes du Rhône, the white "Le Bouquet des Garrigues" has an elegant and precise nose of white-fleshed fruit aromas, well-ripened pear with notes of Victoria pineapple. The palate is very fresh, with yellow nectarine. Good length marked by liquorice notes on the finish. Highly recommended.
