Clos du Caillou

The wines are vinified by Bruno Gaspard, supported by oenologist Philippe Cambie, highly renowned in Châteauneuf du Pape for having vinified numerous Châteauneuf cuvées that achieved the ultimate rating of 100/100 Parker, which was the case for the cuvée La Réserve du Clos du Caillou in 2001, 2005, 2007, and 2010 (4 times 100/100 in one decade!). The Clos du Caillou consists of 9 hectares in the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation, located on an exceptional terroir composed mainly of rounded pebbles and filtering sands, and 44 hectares in Côtes du Rhône, but it will likely soon incorporate the Domaine de Panisse into its holdings (comprising 6.5 hectares of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, acquired at the end of 2020). The Clos du Caillou is certified Organic Agriculture and is moving towards biodynamic farming. However, there are no century-old vines here, as the estate's vineyard was largely planted in the 1950s, though the age of the vines is still venerable. The Clos du Caillou wine range consists of 5 Châteauneuf du Pape cuvées: only one white "Les Safres," and 4 red cuvées: "Tradition," "Les Safres," "Les Quartz," and finally the most renowned and famous: "La Réserve." In white, "Safres" (40% grenache blanc, 30% roussanne, 30% clairette) presents a very floral nose with slightly mineral notes of graphite; on the palate, the wine releases aromas of flat peach and vineyard peach combined with blood orange and candied citron. A wine full of complexity and balance. For the reds, "Safres" offers a nose of subtle aromas of red fruits, orange peel, and salted butter. The palate is smooth, fresh, with notes of kirsch cherries and cocoa, with superb balance, great finesse, and beautiful length. The cuvée "Les Quartz" (70% grenache, 30% syrah) presents an elegant and subtle nose of orange marmalade and candied cherry aromas, combined with sweet spices. The palate is smooth, suave with beautiful aromatic persistence, all in elegance. Finally, "La Réserve" 2017 with 55% grenache and 45% mourvèdre develops a captivating nose, powerful yet delicate, blending aromas of plum liqueur and raspberry coulis. Its palate is superb, smooth, dynamic with aromas of fresh fruit compote, wild blackberry, wild strawberry, blueberry, and bilberry, accompanied by some spicy curry notes. In Côtes du Rhône, the white "Le Bouquet des Garrigues" has an elegant and precise nose of white-fleshed fruit aromas, very ripe pear with notes of Victoria pineapple. The palate shows great freshness, with yellow nectarine. Good length marked by liquorice notes in the finish. Recommended.
