Gallety wines, great wines from Southern Rhône
The GALLETY estate is a family domaine that was created in 1974 in the commune of Saint Montan in the Ardèche (south of Montélimar, on the right bank of the Rhône). Initially composed of vineyards, fruit trees, forest and garrigue, the entire Gallety estate was spread over nearly 80 hectares of land...

...and it required a great deal of restructuring work from Alain Gallety, both in terms of reorganising the estate and selecting the grape varieties, before reaching its current form of 15 hectares of contiguous vineyard. Since the production of his first vintage in 1978, Alain Gallety has been joined by his son David Alexandre, who now manages the Gallety estate on his own. The estate produces truly distinctive wines, classified since 1999 under the AOC Côtes du Vivarais appellation. The vineyard is planted with Syrah and Grenache for the production of Rhône reds, but Domaine Gallety also offers a white Rhône wine made from Grenache Blanc and Marsanne, with touches of Roussanne. Harvesting is done by hand with meticulous sorting in the vineyard, and yields are very low (25 hl/ha and approximately 15 hl/ha for the Gallety "Syrare" cuvée). For the reds, the must is worked in the traditional manner with manual punch-downs, followed by 2 years of ageing in oak barrels. The Gallety wine range is diverse and organised around several red cuvées — "La Haute Vigne", the grand wines "Domaine Gallety" in both white and red, and the cuvées "Syrare", "Emma" and "La Ligure". The "Clos Latin" 2008 from Gallety is a true jewel in its case, like a collector's item, as it is limited to only 256 bottles, with 46 months of ageing, and does not leave the Gallety estate until after more than 10 years. The "Haute Vigne" cuvée, made from young vines (50% Syrah, 50% Grenache), is a true delight — a wine for immediate pleasure, centred on red fruit, to be enjoyed within 3 years. The Gallety red cuvée, from the same Syrah/Grenache blend (40/45-year-old vines), is a refined, highly drinkable wine with a generous aromatic profile centred on dark fruits. It is best opened 1 hour in advance and will develop beautifully over 8 to 10 years. The Emma cuvée from Gallety (a single-parcel selection of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah) brings finesse and complexity, with an aromatic profile of dark fruits and spices, and a great length on the palate. Its ageing potential is 10 to 15 years. The La Ligure cuvée from Gallety, predominantly Grenache, fully benefits from the character of very old 85-year-old vines, with minuscule yields (approximately 8 hl/year) and a long ageing period of 36 to 40 months in oak barrels. The wine is full and concentrated and will improve over 10 to 15 years. Finally, the "Syrare" cuvée is a blend of 70% Syrah and 30% old-vine Grenache, with 2 years of ageing. Delicate on the nose, it offers a fruity intensity of black cherry and redcurrant, nuanced by notes of undergrowth evolving towards spices. Ample and fleshy on the palate, it strikes a balance between the roundness of the fruit and minerality, resting on firm yet refined tannins. The finish is of superb length, lingering on violet and pepper. A wine to keep for at least 10 years. Domaine Gallety produces great Rhône wines — not to be missed…
