Established in the heart of Vosne-Romanée since 1797, Domaine Lamarche owns one of the most coveted collections of vineyards in the entire Côte de Nuits. Its signature wine remains La Grande Rue, a 1.5-hectare Grand Cru held as a monopole and nestled between La Romanée-Conti and La Tâche, two monopoles of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. It also has plots in Clos de Vougeot, Echezeaux and Grands Echezeaux, along with a superb collection of Vosne-Romanée Premiers Crus. Farmed organically since 2010 and led by Nicole Lamarche, the estate now produces fragrant, elegant and refined Pinot Noirs that rank among Burgundy’s most sought-after wines.

History of Domaine Lamarche

The estate's roots go back to 1797, while the family's maternal branch was present in Vosne-Romanée as early as 1740. It was in the early twentieth century, however, that Henri Lamarche truly organized the property and, over three generations, assembled the exceptional collection of climats known today. Its jewel, La Grande Rue, did not attain grand cru status until 1992: the climat had been excluded from the classification of the 1930s purely for tax reasons, even though its position between La Romanée-Conti and La Tâche left no doubt about its quality.

In 1985, following Henri's death, his son François Lamarche took the reins alongside his wife Marie-Blanche. Long criticized for uneven consistency from the 1970s through the 1990s, the estate began a remarkable turnaround in the late 1990s. The turning point came in 2003, when Nicole Lamarche, trained in enology, joined her father. She took charge of winemaking in 2006, then assumed full management of the estate after François's sudden death in 2013. Her cousin Nathalie handled sales. Beginning with the 2018 vintage, Nicole officially put her name on the estate and redesigned its labels. In 2021, Nathalie's departure led to the loss of several parcels, including Grands Echezeaux, Aux Malconsorts, and La Croix Rameau, leaving the property at around seven hectares, centered on its finest climats.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Lamarche

Most of the vineyard lies in Vosne-Romanée and Flagey-Echezeaux, at the heart of the Côte de Nuits' golden triangle. The Jurassic clay-limestone soils vary considerably from one climat to another, from well-drained stony scree high on the slope to exposed limestone slabs midslope and deeper soils below. Pinot Noir covers almost the entire area, with only about thirty ares planted to Aligoté.

La Grande Rue is as distinctive geologically as it is historically. This narrow, 1.65-hectare strip runs vertically up the slope, crossing the same geological layers as its immediate neighbors. This accounts for its complexity and its ability to combine the finesse of La Romanée-Conti with the depth of La Tâche. The estate's Clos de Vougeot comes from three distinct parcels in different parts of the clos, producing an exceptionally complete blend. Synthetic chemicals were banned in 2005, followed by a full conversion to organic farming in 2010, with plowing, soil cultivation, and the preservation of biodiversity.

Winemaking at Domaine Lamarche

Nicole Lamarche seeks elegance and freshness above all, rather than power. Grapes are harvested by hand and sorted twice, first in the vineyard and then on a sorting table at the winery. Most are destemmed, though a proportion of whole clusters is retained for the grands crus when the vintage allows. Fermentation is gentle, with measured extraction designed to preserve fine tannins and the fruit's aromatic purity.

Aging lasts fourteen to twenty months in oak barrels, depending on the appellation and cuvée. One of Nicole Lamarche's major changes was to significantly reduce the proportion of new oak, capping it at fifty percent for the top wines and using far less throughout the rest of the range, as well as changing coopers. That decision, coupled with a more restrained approach to aging, transformed the estate's style: the wines gained transparency, salinity, and clearer terroir expression while retaining the depth inherited from these exceptional climats.

The Cuvées of Domaine Lamarche

Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits: from higher-altitude slopes set back from the Côte, this cuvée benefits from cool nights that preserve acidity. Red currant, violet, and a hint of pepper make for a lively, easy-drinking wine offering excellent value.

Vosne-Romanée: a blend of several parcels across the village, this village-level wine perfectly embodies the estate's fragrant, refined style. Juicy red fruit, gentle spice, and floral notes flow across a silky, saline palate. It develops considerably after five to eight years in the cellar.

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes: situated low on the slope below Malconsorts, this climat offers a delightful perfume that is open and fresh even in its youth. Fine tannins underpin its structure, while the fruit is immediately approachable, making it one of the range's most enticing premier crus to drink young.

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots: one of the village's greatest climats, tucked between Echezeaux and Richebourg. The deeper nose, slightly reductive in its youth, reveals greater complexity and pronounced salinity. The palate is generous yet finely etched, with aging potential of ten to fifteen years.

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru La Croix Rameau: a tiny climat neighboring Romanée-Saint-Vivant, produced by the estate through the 2021 vintage. Its floral spice aromas, concentration, and layered flavors made it one of the range's most compelling cuvées. A rarity to seek out in older vintages.

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts: a prestigious climat adjoining La Tâche, also produced through the 2021 vintage. A broader, more floral nose, pronounced structure, and a spicy backbone give it an almost grand cru dimension. A must for collectors.

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Cras: a more recent addition to the range, this premier cru in the north of the appellation offers fine aromatic depth, with refined herbal notes, black fruit, and a firm mineral backbone. More earthy than the estate's Vosne-Romanées, it needs a few years to soften.

Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru: a distinctive blend of three parcels in different parts of the clos, giving it unusual completeness. The nose opens with remarkable aromatic breadth, while the palate offers generous volume, a melting texture, and a freshness that makes the whole wine especially savory. A grand cru for long aging.

Echezeaux Grand Cru: from just over a hectare within this expansive Flagey grand cru, it combines breadth and depth with an enticingly lush fruit character. Black cherry, faded rose, forest floor, and spice form a noble bouquet, followed by silky tannins and a persistent finish.

Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru: an immediate neighbor of Clos de Vougeot, this historic estate grand cru, produced through the 2021 vintage, was denser and more structured than Echezeaux. Deep red fruit, aromatic clarity, and layers of flavors melding on the finish marked it as a wine of the highest caliber.

La Grande Rue Grand Cru Monopole: the estate's undisputed jewel and the Côte d'Or's second-smallest grand cru after La Romanée. This 1.65-hectare strip, farmed as a monopole, lies between La Romanée-Conti and La Romanée to the north and La Tâche to the south. It yields a wine of rare complexity, with spice, floral notes, red and black fruit, and a distinctive hint of mint. Its perfume is captivating; the palate fills the mouth with a precision and capacity to evolve in the glass that seldom leave anyone unmoved. A wine of exceptional stature to cellar for many years.

La Grande Rue Cuvée 1959: a small-production cuvée from vines involved in a 1959 exchange of parcels between the estate and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, an event commemorated in its name. Made in tiny quantities and only in certain vintages, it offers an even more concentrated and distinctive expression of this legendary climat, reserved for the most discerning enthusiasts.
