History of Domaine Machard de Gramont

The history of Domaine Machard de Gramont is intimately linked to that of an old Burgundian family deeply rooted in wine culture. Located in Premeaux-Prissey, a hamlet neighbouring Nuits-Saint-Georges, at the heart of the mythical Route des Grands Crus of the Côte de Nuits, the estate is today directed by Arnaud Machard de Gramont, who passionately perpetuates a long family winemaking tradition. Arnaud is now supported by his two sons Alban and Alexis, who form the new generation and ensure the continuity of the family's expertise.

The estate's headquarters, located at 5 rue Pique in Premeaux-Prissey, welcomes visitors in an exceptional setting: vaulted cellars built in the 19th century, whose magnificent arches create a striking architectural effect in the tasting rooms and ageing spaces. Over the decades, the viticultural heritage has gradually been built up through strategic acquisitions on the finest climates of the Côte d'Or, from the north (Chenôve, where the Bourgogne Pinot Noir Le Chapître is produced) to the south (as far as Puligny-Montrachet). This exceptional geographical reach, rare in Burgundy, gives the estate its unique signature: a true mosaic of terroirs between the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune, expressed with elegance and intensity.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Machard de Gramont

The vineyard of Domaine Machard de Gramont extends over approximately twenty hectares, spread across nearly 50 kilometres between Chenôve (to the south of Dijon) and Puligny-Montrachet (to the south of Beaune), covering the two most prestigious Côtes of Burgundy. In the Côte de Nuits, the estate cultivates plots in Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges (Village, lieu-dit Les Hauts Poirets, Vieilles Vignes, 1er Cru), Gevrey-Chambertin (lieu-dit Pressonnier) and Chambolle-Musigny. In the Côte de Beaune, plots are found in Aloxe-Corton (Les Morais), Beaune (Les Epenotes, 1er Cru Aux Coucherias, 1er Cru Les Chouacheux), Chorey-lès-Beaune (Les Beaumonts), Savigny-lès-Beaune (Village, 1er Cru Les Guettes), Pommard (1er Cru Le Clos Blanc), Saint-Romain and Puligny-Montrachet (Les Houillères).

The soils, typically Burgundian in character, are predominantly clay-limestone, with marly-limestone nuances on the slopes of the great climates and more stony, calcareous soils on the Premier Crus. This diversity of terroirs gives Pinot Noir, the estate's principal grape variety, a remarkable range of expression, combining elegance and intensity. Chardonnay, planted on a few privileged plots (Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Creux Fraîche Eau, Puligny-Montrachet Les Houillères, Bourgogne), yields precise and mineral whites. The vines are tended with the utmost care, in keeping with Burgundian traditions. Harvesting is carried out by hand, a guarantee of optimal quality for the grapes entering the winery.

Winemaking at Domaine Machard de Gramont

In the cellar at Premeaux-Prissey, within the 19th-century vaulted cellars that give the estate its charm, Arnaud, Alban and Alexis Machard de Gramont apply a winemaking approach faithful to Burgundian traditions, passed down from generation to generation. For the reds, after sorting in the winery, Pinot Noir grapes are vinified in vats with a cold pre-fermentation maceration, followed by alcoholic fermentation conducted at controlled temperatures. Punch-downs and pump-overs are measured, in pursuit of the most delicate extraction, to preserve the purity of fruit and the aromatic elegance characteristic of the house style.

Ageing takes place in oak barrels for 12 to 18 months, with a measured proportion of new wood that varies according to the cuvée (higher for the Premier Crus and wines intended for ageing, more restrained for the regional and village appellations). For the whites, Chardonnay grapes are gently pressed, settled and then fermented in barrels, followed by ageing on fine lees with regular stirring, which adds volume, richness and aromatic complexity. Bottling then takes place at the estate, under the expert eye of Arnaud Machard de Gramont and his sons, in pursuit of a faithful expression of each climat.
