This brings the full potential of this great terroir to light. Indeed, Pic-Saint-Loup stands out a little more each year, producing wines of rare finesse in a Languedoc climate known for being hot and arid. Its varied soils give rise to a diversity of expressions that can be recognized in the cuvées. Around their village of Lauret, Clos Marie has 22 hectares of vineyards reaching elevations of up to 350 meters, helping preserve the wines’ freshness. This limestone terroir, dotted with clay-marl scree, gives Clos Marie wines a distinctive mineral character. Clos Marie practices biodynamic viticulture but does not publicize it. By defining his plots, Christophe Peyrus has created a diverse range of six wines: four red Languedoc wines—L'Olivette, Simon, Les Métairies du Clos and Les Glorieuses—and two fine white Languedoc wines, Manon and Les Métairies du Clos. Praised for their finesse, substance and distinction, the wines of Domaine du Clos Marie are appreciated by wine lovers and are much sought after. The Glorieuses red wine cuvée is produced only in great vintages when conditions are right, to express the very best of the estate’s production. In a vintage such as 2013, the wine has a nose reminiscent of Pinot Noir and great Burgundy. Its texture is splendid and remarkably fine, with a slender, refined profile. The Simon cuvée is an outstanding success in 2017, and there is no doubt it will age well. Among the white wines, the Manon cuvée has simpler aromas, while the old-vine Métairies du Clos reveals a complex nose of apricot and sweet spices, followed by a round, fruity, fresh palate and a long finish. Christophe Peyrus recommends decanting wines under five years old to avoid any possible reductive aromas. Clos Marie is an estate worth recommending to lovers of wines with Southern aromas, particularly those who favor balance and finesse over power and showiness.
