Clos Marie is one of the flagship estates of the Pic Saint-Loup appellation in the Languedoc. Since 1995, it is Françoise Julien who took over this family estate and restructured it with Christophe Peyrus. They produce wines that reflect their own character, and which, following the recent promotion of Pic Saint-Loup to a full AOC in its own right, no longer relegate this appellation to second place beneath the mention « Coteaux du Languedoc » on their labels.

This allows us to highlight the full potential of this great terroir. Indeed, Pic-Saint-Loup stands out a little more each year, producing wines of rare finesse in a Languedoc climate renowned for being hot and arid, thanks to varied soils offering a beautiful diversity of expressions identifiable in the cuvées. On their village of Lauret, Clos Marie has 22 hectares of vineyards, reaching up to 350 metres in altitude, which preserves the freshness of the wines. This limestone terroir, dotted with clay-marl scree, gives Clos Marie wines a rather singular mineral expression. Clos Marie practices biodynamics, but does not publicise it. Christophe Peyrus, by delineating his plots, has crafted a very diverse range of 6 wines with 4 cuvées in Languedoc red: L'Olivette, Simon, Les Métairies du Clos and Les Glorieuses, accompanied by 2 beautiful cuvées in Languedoc white: Manon and Les Métairies du Clos. Praised for their finesse, their flesh and their distinction, the wines of Clos Marie are appreciated by enthusiasts and rather sought after. The Glorieuses cuvée in red wine is produced only in great vintages and when conditions allow, in order to express the quintessence of the estate's production. In a vintage such as 2013, the wine has a nose of Pinot Noir and great Burgundy. Its substance is splendid and of great finesse, long-limbed and thoroughbred. The Simon cuvée is frankly successful in 2017, and there is no doubt it will age well. In white wine, the Manon cuvée is simpler in its aromas, while the old-vine cuvée Métairies du Clos reveals a complex nose of apricot and soft spices with a round, fruity and fresh palate, before a long finish. Christophe Peyrus recommends decanting wines under 5 years old, to avoid any possible reduction aromas. Clos Marie is an estate to recommend for lovers of wines with Southern aromas, but leaning more towards balance and finesse than power and showiness.
