While the warm spring followed by a cold and rainy summer suggested a delicate year for the entire French vineyard, the sunny month of September ultimately allowed for catching up on some of the delay, thus making the 2007 vintage a rather good year, particularly for whites.

Our advice for buying a wine from 2007

Indeed, although the quality of 2007 wines (rather acidic and low in alcohol) is not to be disputed, there is a slight gap between red wines and white wines. This is particularly reflected in the vintage rating. The culprits are the vineyards in the northern half of France, such as those producing Loire wines, Alsace wines and Burgundy wines, but also later-ripening grape varieties such as Chenin.

This trend is very well confirmed when looking at the 2007 vintage for Bordeaux wines. While the whites and sweet wines are very successful, the red Bordeaux wines are much less so (we will not, however, criticize the great wines of Saint-Émilion and the great Pomerol wines which remain lovely wines).

In summary, it is in the Rhône Valley vineyard that we find the greatest wines of 2007, particularly in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation which delivers generous wines, supported by beautiful acidity.
